Question. I was looking around, and i just now realized that Thriller was nominated/won various American Music Awards in both 1984, and 1985... Can someone tell me how that works exactly, meaning, like how was Thriller eligible to be nominated in 84 and in 85?

Good question. Maybe it's because the album was on the charts still a few years after release. The AMA's are weird like that because it might be based on rotation of a song.

Michael Jackson Has Sold More Albums Since His Death Than The Last 13 Years of His Life

King of Pop has sold 13.228 million albums since his death in 2009, compared to 13.152 million from 1996-2008

Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009 and, as might have been expected, has had tremendous album sales since. In the immediate aftermath of his death, Jackson's album and digital sales skyrocketed, but that strong sales trend has continued for the past five years.

In fact, the past five years have been some of the strongest in sales for Jackson since Nielsen SoundScan's inception in 1991. According to the company's data, Michael Jackson has sold 13.228 million albums since his death. In the five years prior to his death (2004-2008), he sold a combined total of 3.934 million, less than 30% of his sales since his death.

Even adding in the six months of album sales prior to his death in June 2009 only raises the total to 4.231 million albums. That's a remarkable increase of 68% in album sales for the five year period following his death. In fact, it takes Jackson's combined sales from 1996 to 2008 to even come close to his sales in the past five years. In that 13-year span, Jackson sold 13.152 million albums.

Jackson's annual sales took a huge hit in the mid-'90s when the first child sexual abuse allegations were brought against him. In 1994, Jackson settled the case out of court, but the impact on his sales was tremendous, and mostly continued throughout the rest of his life. Sales dropped from more than 2 million in 1993 to 555,000 in 1994. He would face additional accusations in the 2000s, for which he would ultimately be acquitted, but his sales never recovered from these scandals.

Album releases in 1995 (“HIStory”) and 2001 (“Invincible”) boosted Jackson's sales for those years, but beyond that he struggled to sell a million albums per year. Since his death, he's averaging more than two-and-a-half million per year. The numbers are somewhat front-skewed, though, as Jackson sold more than 2 million albums in the three weeks immediately following his death.

Digital singles saw a similar posthumous jump. In the five years since his death, Jackson has sold 24.168 million digital tracks, averaging 4.83 million per year, understanding again that the data is front-loaded as a result of the immediate sales spike following the singer's death.

Jackson sold almost as many digital tracks in the first two weeks after his death than he did in all of 2008. He sold 2.3 million digital singles the week ending June 28, 2009, and 2.016 million the following week. His total for 2008 was 2.8 million.

Jackson passed away while rehearsing for a series of 50 concerts in London titled “This Is It,” with the singer suggesting retirement after the show. The previous years had seen financial struggles for the singer, but the tremendous interest in the concert series, which was extended from an original 10-concert plan due to record-breaking ticket sales, was poised to bring in millions.

Michael Jackson U.K. Single Sales Hit 4 Million for Five Years Since His Death

Britain's Official Charts Company says more than 3.8 million albums have sold over the period, with "Man in the Mirror" the most downloaded song.

LONDON – In a tribute to Michael Jackson, who died five years ago Wednesday, British music sales tracking firm The Official Charts Company on Wednesday disclosed sales information for "The King of Pop" since his death.

"His British fans have downloaded nearly 4 million copies of his singles since that fateful week in 2009," the firm said. "His legacy lives on through his music."

In addition, more than 3.8 million copies of Jackson's albums have been purchased in the U.K. in the last five years, according to the Official Charts Company.

That includes sales of two posthumous albums released by his estate – 2010's Michael and Xscape, which became the singer's 10th U.K. number 1 album last month - and his previous studio releases, compilations, soundtracks and live albums.

Jackson's most downloaded track of the last five years in Britain is "Man In The Mirror," The Official Charts Company said. The 1988 single from his Bad album has been downloaded 413,000 times in Britain since Jackson's death. Nearly all single sales in the U.K. are in digital form these days.

"Thriller" comes in second with more than 244,000 digital downloads and "Billie Jean" with 224,000 downloads. They are followed by "Smooth Criminal" (189,000 downloads) and "Beat It" (171,000).

The top 10 are rounded out by "Hold My Hand," featuring Akon, "Love Never Felt So Good," featuring Justin Timberlake, "Dirty Diana," "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Black or White.

For those of you who where around in the mid 80's - 90's. could you tell me a little bit about what happened when Janet came onto the scene. I don't really know how to word that, lol. But basically, I'm wanting to get into Janet, for a long time I was under the impression that Janet was only Janet because her brother was Michael Jackson. Could anyone that lived through the era tell me about some of Janets influences on Popular music/culture?

Thanks!

Remembering Michael Jackson and the Racial Mashup of 'Black or White'

6/26/14

Five years ago yesterday, Michael Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest at his home and, after receiving treatment there, was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. In his honor, fans of the King of Pop have been Tweeting, Facebooking and Tumblr-ing tributes with tags such as#RIPMichaelJackson.

Jackson, who was reputed to have Choctaw ancestry on his father's side and possible Blackfeet ancestry on his mother's, was also known for his spirit of inclusivity and desire to bring people of different races together.

"Michael was precious, kind and humble," Romero says on the Red Nation site. "He carried a light that shined so bright. His music was a gift to the world and that is why he was brought here. I was blessed to have known Michael."

Schubert, whoever you really are, just stop it and get a life. Seriously, I should of known you were a troll after debating with you last week. Waste of my time. Idiot.

Anyway heres that "(carry on) Stay" song....

And no this link is not illegal or whatever as it is NOT Michael Jackson. Sorry Derek1984, you've been had mate. The song itself is OK, but to pass these off as real is disgraceful and pathetic. "Breaking news" was just so fake it was actually funny. "Stay" is better, but that definately ain't Michael.

It's been around online since 2010/2011, and IIRC, it's a Cascio track.

I've just saw that this was leaked a few years ago. I have listened to the final version. It's definitely Michael Jackson throughout the whole song. Maybe it is a Cascio track? But this is DEFINITELY Michael Jackson singing this track.

I know a Malachi track when I hear it. I know a Michael Jackson track when I hear it. This is Michael Jackson on this track.

Sure ain't him. And eternal shame on Sony for trying to pass those songs off as genuine.
However, it has been said that any future MJ release will not include any of the Cascio recordings.
