Nothing that Beyonce,or any other artist, does will ever surpass Thriller and the Michaelmania of 1983.None of her songs will have that type of longtime impact. She's already made dozens of music videos and not a single one of them can compare to the landmark "Thriller" video.I'm gonna assume that you were high or drunk when you made that comment, lol.

Totally agree SoulAlive - I watched grown men who never listened to anything other than hard rock tune into Thriller and love just about every song on the album. Very similar to Elvis and the Beatles. These things don't come around often.

The 80's was just one of those times though. No one will EVER reach Michaelmania status but that decade had it's moments. Madonna seemed to catch the imagination of girls the world over with her "Like A Virgin" period spawning dress-like-me devotion. Prince tried in 1984 with "Purple Rain". He failed of course becasue well, he's Prince. If I may venture into dangerous territory here I'll declare that "Purple Rain" is the attempt of a Prince to make HIS version of "Thriller". But with all the wierdness and eroticism and drama inherent in the material, it just could never be as welcoming as "Thriller". But lots of people were into him. It seemed like everything went from Michaelmania to Princemania. Then there's Bruce Springstein who seemed to have the working class up in a lather with a dash of anti-conservative political rhetoric thrown in for good measure. His audience was much more homogeneous though so it never felt like EVERYONE was rapped up in the whole Brucemania thing. Lastley U2-mania came in 1987 with a very spiritual allure and that will always find an audience for better (U2) or worse (Creed). Their very successful Joshua Tree tour had every show feeling like a spiritual revival.

They were so sick of hearing every song off "Thriller" every hour on the radio. Please STOP talking about Prince if your not going to state facts!!!!!

Stop getting so mad! Read the whole post first of all. Secondly, speaking of facts, it's a fact that Princemania wasn't as big as Michaelmania, the whole point of my post. I'd roll my eyes if I thought it was worth the energy.

I agree nod Purple Rain was huge in 1984,but it wasn't like Michaelmania of 1983.The only thing I would compare the Michaelmania/Thriller phenomenon to is the Bee Gees/Saturday Night Fever mania of 1977/78.

I don't think Prince was trying to re-create Thriller, but let's just say that every artist out at that time had Thriller-like success in their sights. Even Springsteen in 1984/85 had a very poppy sound and wanted to get as many singles off Born In The USA as possible.

.

Without delving into too much MJ discussion, one of the reasons that Thriller was so massive is because everyone watched Michael Jackson grow up from child star into a successful solo artist. At the time of Thriller, he really wasn't "weird" yet -- that all came after.

.

Beyoncé is playing the part of 2013 superstar perfectly. Release something digitally so fans can consume it immediately, and let social media promote your album for free. She'll be invited onto Good Morning America or Today, probably do a few late-night talk shows too. One thing to note though: those videos aren't cheap to make.

At the rate she's selling she might end up beating Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift's sales record for most units sold in its first week for 2013. (Not that its all about the numbers or anything but it is interesting).

.

I wonder if she'll be able to sustain the hype though say two months from now. Justin had successs with Suit & Tie but lacked follow up singles to sustain the initial interest in his "return to music." Talk about hyperbole. rolleyes

Beyonce's album success may rewrite music industry rules

Beyonce’s self-titled smash hit debuted with no warning and no publicity and the singer’s new album was so secret at Sony music it went by a code name, "Lily."
Apple says the album is already number one in 100 countries and its runaway success has the music industry wondering whether the new publicity is no publicity.
At midnight last Friday, Beyonce posted a short video on social media, where the pop diva announced the release of her fifth solo album. The new album was such a closely guarded secret; even Beyonce's most die-hard fans were caught by surprise.

It arrived without a television blitz. There were no leaked singles and no commercial tie-ins. She bypassed all the traditional ways of generating buzz for new albums.

“I don't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready, and from me to my fans,” said Beyonce in the video.Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts for Billboard Magazine, told CBS News’ Anthony Mason that “sometimes all that hype doesn’t necessarily work.”
“Sometimes, the less you know about something, the more you want to find out about it, and clearly people wanted to find out about Beyonce's album,” said Caulfield.
Throughout the weekend, fans lit up Twitter, with 1.2 million posts during the first 12 hours of the album's release. Even Katy Perry and Lady Gaga got caught up in the excitement.
Beyonce calls her work a "visual album" because each song also comes with its own music video.
“I wanted people to hear things differently, and have a different first impression, not just listen to a 10-second clip but see the whole vision of the album,” said the singer. “It was important that we made this a movie.”
Many of the videos were shot in public locations all over the world, before the secret album dropped.
“I think everyone that she worked with must have had an incredibly interesting nondisclosure agreement that they signed so that no one knew what was going on until she gave the signal it was OK to tell people,” said Caulfield.
The album contains duets with husband Jay Z and hip-hop star Drake, as well as a cameo by her daughter Blue Ivy.
With the album's immediate success, Beyonce may have forced the music industry to rewrite its rules for promoting and marketing new records.
“Not everyone will be able to do this in the future, but certainly, there are probably a lot of artists, a lot of A-list artists, and their managers and record labels, are looking to what Beyonce did this week, and seeing what they can learn from that,” said Caulfield.
Another way the album is different, individual tracks are not for sale. Fans have to buy the entire album on iTunes for $15.99. Apple says it sold almost 829,000 during the first three days and that's more than $13 million in sales.

Beyonce’s ‘Drunk In Love’ Hits 5 Million Mark In 24 Hours

beyonce that grape juice she is diva 7 Beyonces Drunk In Love Hits 5 Million Mark In 24 Hours

‘I’ll take the critical acclaim and the #1 album to go.’

As Columbia Records and the folks over at ‘Parkwood’ continue to celebrate the project’s game-changing rise to the top, Beyonce‘s self-titled new album is fast becoming the gifts that just keeps on giving.

Why the star’s party #1s is on course to make room for one more?

24 hours after being uploaded to the singer’s official VEVO page, her Jay Z- assisted jam ‘Drunk In Love’ has now arrived at the 5 million streams mark on YouTube alone.

As it stands, the release has generated 5,154,361 views and is now guaranteed a Top Twenty debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next, while its supporting album is predicted to spend numerous weeks atop the Billboard 200 by way of its staggered release.

Indeed, after its digitals sales took it to # this week, its physical release on December 21st is set to keep the project at the #1 spot, set to surpass the 1 million US units milestone within by the time it welcomes its three month anniversary.

The album has officially sold 1 million copies JUST as an iTunes exclusive. And HDD is estimating another 250-275k for next week from JUST iTunes sales. Now add sales of the physical album being released on Friday. It's like the more people talk shit, the more she sells! cool

Why ‘Beyoncé’ Makes Me Want to Die

Look, I’ll be honest: I can’t stand Beyoncé. There’s something about her that has always stirred a sort of visceral loathing in me, something I’ve tried hard to articulate over the years. It’s a combination of the narcissism, the materialism, the arrogance, the faux feminism, and the awful, awful songs. And the fact that it seems I am the literal only person who feels this way (well, just about), while everyone else is writing articles like this. Beyoncé is not an avatar of perfection; she is a cashed-up diva with a temperature-controlled personal archive and a penchant for making propaganda films (and trampling people in her way). BUT! I am a professional. And I listened to Beyoncé with an open mind. I tried. I really did. This is what happened.

“Pretty Hurts”
So. The album opens with a song about the pervasiveness of the beauty myth, which sounds somewhat promising until you remember who’s singing it. Sample lyrics: “Just another stage/ Pageant the pain away/ This time I’m gonna take the crown/ Without falling down.” Look, America’s obsession with physical appearance and general superficiality is definitely a subject worth addressing in song. But sorry, you’ll excuse me for not taking you entirely seriously for singing “Perfection is the disease of a nation” when elsewhere on the album you devote an entire song to how perfect you are. (Oh yes, of course she does.) Or singing “Blonder hair, flat chest/ TV says bigger is better… Vogue says thinner is better,” because:

gq beyonce

“Haunted”
If you can make it through this album, you’ll notice a theme: samples from Beyoncé’s past. This song starts with the precocious little Knowles on stage at a talent show, thanking judges, her parents and the city of Houston for giving her some sort of award. Huzzah. But wait, this shit ishard, don’t you know? “All the shit I do is boring/ All these record labels boring/ I don’t trust these record labels/ I’m touring/ All these people on the planet/ Working 9 to 5, just to stay alive.” Yeah, all those funny little people, eh? Must be weird for them, right?

“Drunk in Love”
But look, this song is actually so awful that it’s kinda hilarious: a song about Beyoncé and Jay-Z having sex! Because that’s exactly what the world needed to hear! Clearly, the whole being-pretty-is-oh-so-difficult thing has long since been forgotten by now, since Beyoncé spends plenty of time talking about how hot she is (“No complaints for my body… Last thing I remember is our beautiful bodies grinding off in that club”). But honestly, it all pales in comparison to Jay-Z’s rap, which may be the actual worst thing ever recorded that does not involve will.i.am. It starts with bit of product placement and a “joke” that Jay-Z is so pleased with he repeats it three times (“That D’Ussé is the shit/ If I do say so myself” — GEDDIT?!), and then descends into what must surely be self-parody — ”Foreplay in the foyer/ Fucked up my Warhol.” OH, BOO FUCKING HOO. Also “foyer” and “Warhol” don’t even vaguely rhyme. Even that’s trumped, though, by the immortal line that finishes Jay’s verse: “Your breasteses is my breakfast.” This is like hearing about your parents having sex. Make it stop.

“Blow”
Oh dear god, they’re still at it. “Can you lick my skittles?/ That’s the sweetest in the middle/ Pink that’s the flavor/ Solve the riddle.” What is it with people comparing vaginas to candy this year?

“No Angel”
Meh.

“Partition”
Not, sadly, about the 1947 division of the subcontinent and the creation of Pakistan, nor about the innovation of including a recovery partition with every standard install of OS X 10.7 and later. No, it’s about how hot Beyoncé is. Surprise. “Every boy in here with me got that smoke/ Every girl in here got to look me up and down… Ya man ain’t ever seen a booty like this.” And, oh, wait: THEY’RE FUCKING AGAIN. “Driver roll up the partition please/ I don’t need you seeing ‘yoncé on her knees… Oh he so horny, he want to fuck/ He bucked all my buttons, he ripped my blouse/ He Monica Lewinski all on my gown.” Disappointing product placement opportunity missed there, mind: surely it was a Versace gown or something?

“Jealous”
Wait! Trouble in paradise! They’re not fucking because Jay-Z’s out on the town somewhere! THE DRAMA! “I’m in my penthouse half naked/ I cooked this meal for you naked/ So where the hell you at?” Hey, we’ve all been there, right? The whole naked cooking thing? What? Oh.

“Rocket”
Normal service restored: they’re fucking again. “Rock right up to the side of my mountain/ Climb until you reach my peak babe, my peak, the peak/ And reach right into the bottom of my fountain.” #splash. (Also, it’s somewhat disturbing how she keeps calling him “daddy.” As in: “You ain’t right for doing that to me, daddy/ Even though I’ve been a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad girl/ Tell me what you’re gonna do about that/ Punish me, please.” Um.)

“Mine”
Wait! Trouble in paradise again! “I’ve been watching for the signs/ Took a trip to clear my mind/ Now I’m even more lost/ And you’re still so fine, oh my, oh my/ Been having conversations about breakups and separations/ I’m not feeling like myself since the baby.” Actually, there’s something pleasantly relatable about this: a hint of humanity beneath the gold-plated, airbrushed veneer. It turns out that even this is carefully contrived, though, because the rest of the song is devoted to a narrative that, yes, brings her back to her dear husband. Reviewers are already falling over themselves to call this “a revealing look at Beyoncé,” and all such things, but it’s not, of course. You only ever see exactly what she wants you to see.

“XO”
I mean, what do you want me to say? It’s a big ol’ power ballad with a fucking choir on it.

“Flawless”
This is the compulsory pseudofeminist anthem on this record, the successor to “Independent Women” and “Single Ladies,” and it’s a load of utter fucking codswallop. You’ll have heard part of this before, as “Bow Down,” but now the “Bow down bitches” refrain is counterpointed by a long monologue from Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who speaks eloquently about how the world sets women in competition against one another and how they’re taught to “shrink themselves… to make themselves smaller.” And LITERALLY A MINUTE LATER, Beyoncé is singing “This diamond, flawless/ My diamond, flawless… God damn, say I, I look so good tonight.” These boasts are interspersed by some sort of woolly cheerleading for girlz in general (“We flawless, ladies, tell ‘em”), but as a demonstration of how hollow Beyoncé’s patented brand of “modern day feminism” is, you couldn’t do much better: her version of empowerment, such as it is, is based on a sort of inherent conservatism, rooted not in compassion and generosity, but instead in materialism, braggadocio, and inescapable narcissism. Feminism is actually caring about people who are oppressed — women, minorities, the poor. It is not spending 99% of your time talking about how great you are and how much hotter you are than other women and how rich you are, and occasionally inserting some sort of nebulous piffle about “girls running the world” or whatever else. The empress isn’t naked; she’s dressed in shit you could never, ever afford, and she’s laughing at you. Bow down, bitches. (Also, the production is fucking dreadful.)

“Superpower”
Features Frank Ocean. More pseudoromantic bilge. I’m tired. My head hurts.

“Heaven”
An understated ballad for a loved one who’s died. And, hey, it’s really quite beautiful, actually.

“Blue”
And, finally, a song about the world’s most famous baby. Say whatever else you like about Beyoncé, she obviously loves her daughter. Good for her. And anyway, the album’s over. I need a drink.

[Edited 12/15/13 17:24pm]

First off, just because his review is in the minority doesn't mean he is any less bias. It's obvious that he has a strong dislike for Beyonce. His review of songs were full of double standards. One, just because others have put Beyonce in the category of sexist women doesn't mean she doesn't know the meaning of what t's like to live up to expectations. Actually, it's obvious that she knows a lot about it. People will always have high expectations for her and many others. Two, he claims that she doesn't really work hard. I mean...I guess. People can say the same thing about a guy who works at an unknown website review music. Third, it's such a double standard to critique Beyonce for writing about sex and sex life when it's commonality in music that men do quite often. When I see a bad review about a song a man sings/raps about sex in a negative light then maybe I can take you seriously. Fourth, your dislike of Beyonce was probably the reason you didn't even listrn to the lyrics of flawless. The song isn't about how awesome she is. It's about thinking that you're awesome and having confidence doesn't mean that you are flawless. The end where you hear that her girl group lost star search proves this. The song is called Flawless but show a flaw at the end. By the way, the beginning of the song that is taking from Bow Down I find no problem with. People are quick to call her an egomaniac, full of herself etc. but yet again, almost every male rapper in the business has a rap song about how dope they are. When a female does it she's full of herself. Admittedly, I'm not fond of the use of the word bitch. But that's her choice. The message behind it though? I completely agree with. When other people specifically artist are telling you to step aside, that you're washed up, that you're not good you get mad and you want to remind them that you're on top right now. She worked to get where she is and that if you are gonna sit and say something you should probably be at that level or higher. I also thought she used the word bitch as a universal insult which I like. I would say that Flawless is a female version of Started From the Bottom by Drake.

with this album she's become my favorite pop artist out. I'd rather listen to this album than JT, Rhianna, Bruno Mars.

Brilliant marketing ploy. Shitty record. The End.

PS - Nobody will remember any of these "songs" in 2 years.

Thats how I feel about it. I do like one or two songs but I just cant get into her music all the way. Just I refused to do with the hoopla over Frank Ocean, I never fall for hype.

They need to listen to more albums over at Billboard that's for sure. Its an alright album but its more of the same, but again that is opinions etc....

The thing that is really getting lost here is the fact that in every article written now i find the term "Game changing move", and again, to refresh everyone here, this is not game changing, im not puttin this move down, but "game changing" is when you actually do something out of the box, and this is not, also i have heard people say "she is sticking it to the majors" REALLY? cause they are collecting money on this, and they funded it, and she released it on a major. The Game is NOT going to change because of this, for ONE main reason, she is an extablished artist when she did this, also she did this while she is still a HUGE mainstream person, she didnt do this after living on an island for a decade and NO ONE speaking her name and then boom did this on a "indie" label and funded it with her own $$$.

SO People do not confuse it, all this "event" proved was that a person can sell a record without being HYPED up the ass for months with singles and videos, she just did it all in one shot.
