Vanessa Williams ~ The Right Stuff (voices of Bobby Byrd, Keith Sweat, & Melanie Andrews)

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Don't know if it's the best use of a sample but it sure is the cleverest because it's not actually a real sample, it's a loose replica.

In the video of Gett Off by Prince and the NPG at 2:50 P introduces the sample by saying "...reminds me of somethin' James useta say..." as one of the servants steps up with an old victrola sitting on a pillow. P takes the needle and sets it on the record and you hear the vinyl start crackling and popping as P sings James Brown's line from Mother Popcorn, "I like 'em fat, I like 'em proud, got to have a mother for me..." except that line was never sung in the original tune.

Although JB does cite "fat" and "proud" in his 1969 hit the two do not come sequentially the way that P quotes him.

And the best part is the bass and horn lines that drop in over the vinyl sounds are technically not sampled but played by the NPG in a different key from the original.

The whole thing just works amazingly well and its the best ever use of a sample that's not really a sample.

Before I even clicked through...this example was pinging neurons ALL OVER my brain...pervasively and persistently. I was stokednti see it so I didn't even hafta search it. Just tag a comment and click, "Post response".

Since I had so little to do... Here's a ?...a "pregunta" if u will.

How come the "Preview Post" has both words capitalized. I feel that is appropriate. But for "Post response" for reasons not apparent to me, the r in response isn't capitalized. Is there a reason for that or is just a random error. Surely I'm not the first to notice and ask for it to be fixed. Is there a reason morenapparsnt than the ones ibdintbsee for a fix?
