She's on the 1st page of this thread, and she's half Indian. Her father is Ravi Shankar. Teena all day, every day, AND night, and twice on Sundays. I believe that she was the only white artist who was ever strictly R&B. Yes Madonna and Mariah Carey (ROTFLMAO) are soulful too, but would either of them give up the amount of fame and fortune they've ammassed in order to strictly be R&B? Hayle no! Teena was true to her heart and soul. She wasn't just an R&B singer, she lived it. And let's be real, she was an amazing singer, the way she could pull you into a song and make you feel it. She was also a great musician and composer. That woman was intelligent and she put that into her lyrics also. She could have been much more successful if she crossed over ( oh, the irony) but she didn't. Even Whitney was pop. I grew up on Teena and I've seen other "white" soulful women (who don't need to be named as there are too many to count)come and go, but Teena was there to stay, from the beginning 'til the end. SHE was the queen of R&B as far as I'm concerned. Forget that ivory shit! She wasn't just dabbling like the others. R&B was her home and she never left.

Not women, but there was Roy Head, Wayne Cochran, Average White Band, and others. Ronnie Milsap started out as R&B, but switched to country in the mid 1970's. Okay, aside from the Average White Band, I'm not familiar with the rest, even TAWB may be a bit before my time. At any rate, it is very rare and admirable that only one woman, Teena, felt compelled enough to do it as her sole output of musical art, everything else be damned. Thanks for making me aware of the others though.

Wayne is a James Brown/Wilson Pickett type singer with a blond Little Richard style pompadour. There were women in the 1960's like Chris Clark on Motown, but she didn't have much success, so her career didn't last long. There's an Australian singer named Renee Geyer who did R&B and blues her whole career. Many of the white R&B and soul singers just didn't get the airplay, that's why they might not be that well known. I'm sorry but most of the world doesnt know Mariah has a black father. Only America is well aware of that fact. To most people Mariah is considered white, so I dont know why people act like its bizarre that people get confused. There really isnt a one drop rule, most people judge by what you look like. If Mariah looked blacker but had the exact same heritage then she would be considered a black person. It might not be right but thats the way it is.

Arnott, that just goes to prove how shallow the concept of race is, regardless of th culture you come from, race is simply whatever you look like? ; am half white and half black just like Mariah, some people think I look latin, does that make me latin, some folks mistake me for arab, should I be associated with arab culture?

"Soulful" isn't exclusive to R&B or the soul music genre. That's why jazz, pop, blues, and country singers are listed. The thread isn't called the "most R&B" or "blue eyed soul". My highlight was mainly to be aimed at the "true to her heart and soul" "she lived it" and "she never left" comments. I know other music genres have soulful singers. Some of the other singers mentioned chased trends and have a couple of soulful songs (Blondie, really?) but are nowhere near the most soulful. [Edited 7/14/13 14:26pm]

No obviously you shouldnt. But Mariah actually does have a high percentage of white in her so its not that far fetched to associate her with being that. [Edited 7/14/13 21:53pm]
