At the time, I didn't know Lisa Keith was white, (when she had the song with Janet & Herb Alpert). I didn't know until many years later. She sounded great on that song. I still love it.

Awe man that first Madonna album was a straight up R&B record.Everybody not only charted on the dance charts but also on the black charts..albeit at like 93,but that's where she got her start. Sire didn't want her face on her first few singles because the music sounded black.

Anyway Teena Marie is bye far the most soulful . Can we even count her as white? smile

It begins and ends with Teena Marie. But Gioia Bruno from the group Expose rates at least an honorable mention here , just from her performance of Let Me Be The One. Jennifer Starr from the group Pure Sugar should be mentioned as well, although she only did one album with the group and has left the music biz.

exactly...Madonna's primary audience when she first started was black....

I was such a huge fan of Blondie (Deborah Harry)...she was so cool to me, before her time..

IMO Amy Winehouse is the most soulful white female artist in the past 25 years

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Some may argue Teena but I could make a good case for Madonna. Soul isn't just a sound. Soul is attitude, style, being authentic, trendsetting, etc. Madonna fits the bill perfectly.

You don't think Teena fits that? Teena fit's that moreso than Madonna. Especially when you mention "authentic." Soul isn't something that you just put on, and ditch once you make it big either. Does Madonna have soul? She most certainly did with her first album like someone previously mentioned even if it was more on the pop side. But MOST soulful NO. I don't see it.

Marcia Ball (Don't be concerned about the sound differences. This music video is different live performances edited together.)

My vote goes to Teena Marie. Her music has consistently topped the R&B chart for the past 30 years. God Bless Lady Tee and Alia Rose. sad

I'm not sure what the amount of hits someone has, have to do with them being soulful. It's just statistics.

I'm surprised we've gone three pages without a mention to Joan Osborne:

And someone asked about Alice Russell but didn't post a clip:

It doesn't. n earlier poster mentioned Madonna as "mostly pop artist." Which considering how some define "soul music," I'm not sure Beyonce, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, or Prince would be considered "soul."

Based on her latest album:

"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Okay first somebody post Mariah Carey, now somebody listed Jill Jones also lol The world will never know how to cliassify us, we are both, but neither. Jill Jones is half black also. Most soulful white girl contest should be limited to mono racial white girls only.
