great idea choosing as a single a song who is basically stolen from another artist listen to Breakbot - Baby I'm yours and tell me it's not the same song...Breakbot himself accused Mars of stealing his song months ago on twitter and Bruno Mars never replied to him...smh

I really want 2 like this cat's material but I find it lacking in many ways. [Edited 5/3/13 8:10am]

HE's a little too much basic for my taste too.. but this song wouldn't be bad if it wasn't totally stolen from another artist especially in the chorus it's the SAME song...

Yeah, Bruno was definitely inspired by the Breakbot's song! But its all good, I like their song and still love Bruno's too! Here's a great live performance of Treasure on the Jimmy Kimmel show. Love how he incorporates live instrumentation and love his dancing band lol!
He's a true performer! [Edited 5/3/13 6:54am] MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

I've grown to like him. I don't think he's a genius, but he's holding my attention more than other things right now... I found myself humming "Locked Out of Heaven"...

I just listened to both back to back. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

it's the same song ...Bruno Mars is starting to become the new Beyonce about stealing from other artists..last year he published as single locked out of heaven which reminded heavily of message in a bottle by the police( in the verses) but now he took basically the entire song of another less famous artist

Ha! I didn't know that Breakbot went after Bruno last Dec over the similarities between his song and "Treasure".

I agree that Treasure and Baby I'm Yours are very similar, its obvious that Bruno heard Breakbot's song and that's what inspired his song. But saying Bruno is the new Beyonce and that he's ripping off from other artists is just plain crazy and WRONG! SMH at people being so quick to slam an artist and call them a fraud not realizing the difference between "ripping off" and inspiration Look folks, EVERY ARTIST gets inspired by other artists' work-and that inspiration ends up influencing their work in some way. Locked Out of Heaven sounds like it could have been a Police song, I agree with this. The Police are one of the many artists Bruno grew up listening to and their sound influenced that song. His song Gorilla could have been a Prince song. Moonshine, another song could have been a Michael Jackson song.
Fact of the matter is Bruno grew up listening to a large variety of artists from the 50s-today. All or most of them have inspired, influenced or impacted him in some way and it comes out in his music. He puts his own spin on the music that has impacted him. And he aint the first artist whose done this and he certainly wont be the last. Most every artist has taken parts of musical pieces from other artists and applied it to their own work in some form or fashion. Bruno is talented, creative and has a great musical sense-and he is an artist in his own right.
Instead of accusing Bruno of copying other artists a more positive way to look at this is that Bruno may have helped introduce other people to these artists. I had never even heard of Breakbot before until they were mentioned in this thread. I checked out their song, I liked what I heard and listened to more of their work and I'm liking it. There may be some folks who shockingly never heard of The Police. But they know of Bruno Mars LOOH song and how it gets compared to the Police all the time, so maybe they decide to check them out and end up becoming fans. Its a win-win situation for both artists imo. MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

I don't get the "rip-off" thing here, Bruno's trying to grow as an artist and he said that in many interviews, true that Treasure sounds perfectly like "I'm Yours" by Breakbot but that doesn't mean he STOLE it from Breakbot, and btw i wonder why people consider Bruno a popstar while he plays like 7 instruments and got a perfect voice LIVE, dances, produces, got the urge to entertain a whole crowd and that's just it, he got it all and he only made 2 albums so that's more like a hugh success, plus what i like more about him is the fact that he's musically varied and doesn't just do R&B or Pop, he does reggae, new wave, rock, dance, soul... and y'all got to get in that groovy mood to listen to his tracks, he may not be that original like Prince doing them guitar solos and making a song that is full of hard instruments and sick vocals or anybody like that back in the day but he's trying and that's the thing.

I had taken allergy medicine last night and didn't feel like getting into a "discussion"...
But I thought the same thing. Your comments reminded me of this:

Great post! You beat me to it!
I think calling Bruno the new "Beyonce" is an insult because he is not like that. He is FARRRR from that.
Yes, you can hear the influence/similarities but the lyrics and style are different. Its not like he straight up copied the entire production style and lyrics. YES, that would be stealing but he did not do that. I dont see how that is "stealing" or not giving credit especially when he acknowledge the Breakbot song inspired it. And I know exactly what Im getting you for your bday

Treasure is catchy and a good one for the treadmill. It sounds like the Breakbot song but it's not close enough to be a plagiarism issue imo. I actually think the Breakbot song is more interesting in terms of the music and changes. They're both just disco throwbacks, though. Is Jamiroquai mad, too? "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

for what I know he didn't aknowledge shit...it' s not just an inspiration c'mon it's the SAME song especially in the chorus... he only changed the words...my ears are saying this at least..to me this is stealing I know that a lot of popular artists did this kind of shit for years but it's always stealing... Every time I see Bruno Mars, I think of Duckie in Pretty in Pink. Mars’ whole image is reminiscent of a cheesy hipster in a 1980s teen flick, who brings a guitar to school with him everyday and tries to get that frigid wallflower girl to go out with him by serenading her with stale little ditties.
His music likes to masquerade itself as being breezy, sweet, romantic and genuine, but is actually a bunch of over the top and offensively melodramatic fluff. The lyrics to his songs are jam-packed with desperate cliches and/or trite pickup lines that attempts to pass themselves off as clever wordplay. The hyperactive choruses to his songs, meanwhile, are grating…and the production of the actual tracks sounds like a bastardized blend of bad emo mixed with adult contemporary pop, and is very yawn-worthy.
To put it simply: Bruno Mars is a dork who makes a Hallmark card seem edgy and is basically a faux-urban version of Chris Isaak for the Twitter generation. While I can appreciate that he seems like one of the few who does not play that overly synth-pop card that the Ke$ha’s and Gaga’s of the music world continue to barf, he is the opposite extreme and it is as irritating. I do not need this cheesy wedding singer on the radio.

Thanks Mjscarousal!
Thank you Shawy89 and great post! I totally agree! You are so right that he is growing as an artist and its fun to see his growth over the past few years and I'm looking forward to seeing what he has in store 2, 5, 10 years from now. He is so talented and versatile. So what if some of his songs sound similar to another artist's song? It only sounds similar but he didnt steal any lyrics or music or anything so as far as I'm concerned he aint stole jack! It was kind of slow at B&N tonight, so I grabbed the Rolling Stone with Bruno Mars on the cover. It also mentioned that he played part of Prince's "the Beautiful Ones" while the interviewer was there, and said that it inspired him... Of course I am not quoting it word for word... But it is available in stores right now. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

He also said this in a recent interview with UK InStyle magazine:

^^ Sorry! I missed that thread... Like I said, I was slow to start liking him. I bought his second album first, and just got "Doo-wops and Hooligans" last week. I definitely see growth from one to the other, and I think he's better than a lot of the music out there right now.
