Well, Ringo did have songwriters and musicians like John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney contributing songs and playing with him, esp on his '70s albums.
Actually, Ringo's solo albums of the last 20 years haven't been bad at times either. IMO his vocals improve with age, he's written/ co-written a few good songs on these later CDs, does some good new Beatle-soundalike tracks, has some excellent backing musicians, as well as the odd cameo from George or Paul on a track or two. I actually think his album Liverpool 8 from a few years back is a decent album.
Of course, compared to the other Beatles solo albums, they're patchy and lie in the lower reaches of the quality spectrum, but they imo are at least as good as some of George's lesser solo albums , which is still imo quite high praise.
It also does no harm at all that we're hearing imo the all-time best drummer in rock/ pop recorded well and in modern sound quality - always love the sound and feel of Ringo's drums wherever I hear him play.
His album Ringo from 1973 is generally seen as his best original solo album. Pick up Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr from 2007, which has a fair bit of the Ringo album on it and you may be quite pleasantly surprised . [Edited 11/4/12 10:34am] [Edited 11/4/12 10:38am]

Even though i Love Sgt. Peppers it is highly overrated.
This album & Pet Sounds are 2 albums i think are great.. innovative and classic.
But people always proclaim these to be the 2 best albums of ALL TIME , and that sometimes ruins it a bit for me.
People act like Peppers is the be all end all pop/art record of all time & nothing else even matters. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

What they did with their albums from Rubber Soul on out was pretty dope for that time period. They did do lots of new things when it comes to recording too. Lots of reverb & editing tricks were done with their records that really weren't being done @ that time. I respect their music. They had great songwriting too. I don't think they're the best ever, but I would definitely say they're one of the best groups..... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Supposedly, that album inspired those Helter Skelter killings, which is probably why it's so hyped

I think it has more to do with it being a double album. Critics love double albums (Blonde on Blonde, Exile on Main Street, Songs in the Key of Life, London Calling, Sign 'O' the Times).

This is heresy or ignorance.
Anytime you hear an album that consists of:
1. A cohesive and artistic whole --------- Sgt Pepper's
2. Both studio and songcraft-------- ------Sgt Pepper's
3. A pop concept album--------------------Sgt Pepper's
...you are the benefactor of the Beatles, sir. The reason you've no appreciation for the Beatles is because how an album is assembled today is quotidian. Prior to Sgt Peppers, albums were mostly a collection of singles, not artistic statements that cohere.
For example:
1984, Parade, Sign O' The Times, Camille, Purple Rain: all of these Prince conception albums owe their existence to the Beatles. You better ask some body, homie! The Beatles' influence is so widespread, it's become mundane and that's why people do not recognize their brilliance today.

Wait:
side one, two or both? | |

this one is tricky, because I rate the album for non-musical reasons
in my opinion, MMT was just a glorified extended EP, a hodgepodge

Because only one half was new material, and only half of that is worthy of recognition

It's basically a greatest hits album. It originally was going to be a 2 disc greatest hits album with some new tracks thrown in. Michael's love for the songs he made during the time made him expand the new material to a full disc and shrink the hits into one disc.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
But that's my point. It wasn't two disc of new material. Just One disc of new material [except for Come Together...ironic, huh? ] & all greatest hits on the other disc. I'm not sure that one should truly count....but hey, that's just my opinion. الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Nope.
Phil Spector's shenanigans ruined what could have been a really good album.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
On the contrary, he made it into a really good album, but it's subjective i guess as to whether you like big orchestration or not, which i do.... I don't understand how this is overrated?, Beatles fans always bag this album, yet it contains, Two of Us, Across the Universe, Let it Be, I've Got a Feeling, Long and Winding Road, Get Back...all classics. We're here, might as well get into it.
