Patti LaBelle Settles Embarrassing Lawsuit
September 6, 2012
Patti LaBelle has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle a complaint that she verbally and physically assaulted a mother and her 18-month-old daughter in a Manhattan apartment lobby two years ago, the mother's lawyer said Wednesday.
The agreement ends a lawsuit that accused the singer of "yelling, screaming obscenities, throwing water and drenching with water, attempting to strike and physically injure" Roseanna Monk and her child, Genevieve, in the lobby of Trump Place on Manhattan's Upper West Side on November 11, 2010.
LaBelle, her lawyer and representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the settlement filed in a federal court in New York. A jury trial had been scheduled for late November, but U.S. District Judge John Koeltl signed an order dismissing the case at the request of each side Wednesday morning.
LaBelle, who lived in the same apartment building as the Monks at the time, denied the allegations in her initial response to the lawsuit last December, according to court documents.
Monk's lawyer, Samuel Davis, told CNN Wednesday that it "took a bunch of depositions" before LaBelle "recognized that she was going to have to face the music."
The singer apparently was upset because she thought the child was wandering around the lobby unattended, Davis said.
"LaBelle besieged them with such ferocity, before she doused them with water, that the baby was crying hysterically," Davis said. "LaBelle would not desist." Davis called the incident violent and traumatic. "The baby went from crying hysterically to vomiting," he said.
The incident caused a change in the child's personality for several months, he said. "She went from being the most outgoing, saying 'hi' to everybody in the lobby of her building, to being clingy and shy," he said.
"Patti is a nice lady, but she has some anger issues," Davis said. The Monks will donate the payment to charity, as Davis will do with his legal fees, which LaBelle must pay, the attorney said.

I for one am glad Patti settled this lawsuit. Her behavior was terrible. I have always liked Patti as a performer, but this is unacceptable behavior for anyone. All these celebs need to get over their big egos and stop thinking they are so special. They're not and never will be any more special than the rest of us.

This particular case was a bit strange...Basically Patti got mad that the little girl was running around in the Lobby then the Mother walked up and told Patti to mind her own business. Patti cussed the woman out while she had a bottle of water in her hand...The water spalshes on the woman.
I'm sorry Patti owes the woman an apology for telling her what to do with her child but the woman does not deserve $100,000....
So in other words if you get into a Cussing match with a Celeb and if the Celeb starts cussing at you first you can sue?
What kind of Lawyer does Patti have and why didnt he put in writing that the amount of Monies given to the other party could NOT be released to the public?...It's as if the lawyer & the Mother went for the Jugular and said "Yeah we got her money, this is the amount and this is what we're gonna do with it."
Then the Mother happily gives the Media a Photo of herself and her daughter and she's talking to any Reporter that will listen...
It wasnt even about the money The Mother in this case just wanted to get back at Patti because Patti cussed her out....Why wasnt it enough that Patti agreed to pay her and her lawyer fees? The Mother still cant let it go and she's going further ...

Well it's settled. Ain't no need to debate how it was handled. Celebrities probably need to be best to be around anybody if both sides are gonna overreact like they did.

How do you know her behaviour was terrible?
There are some hypocrites in this thread [Edited 9/6/12 12:44pm]

Anybody know how the thing with the guy at the airport and Patti was settled? Was there even a case?

The assault case involving the West Point cadet hasn't been resolved yet. She might have to write another check.

Patti needs to calm her ass down..
And that 100k is going to be eaten up by legal fees and such. I bet that woman doesn't even get half.

That footage at the airport with the cadet was shocking, but this I feel might be exaggerated. I wish I had the courage to go up to some parents who let their kids run wild in public. I know this was only an 18 month old but there really is NO discipline these days.
I've been shocked in the past in cinemas in particular watching kids under the age of 10 ordering their parents around, demanding as much popcorn as they want, running off before and during the movie literally screaming down the aisles, all the while their parents are talking to them calmly just taking it. If I did that as a child I'd be taken home and sent to my room without question. [Edited 9/6/12 22:51pm]

This was an ugly lawsuit,as well as the other one with the cadet I don't like to see Patti in the news for stuff like this. It's not a good look for her. [Edited 9/7/12 1:51am]

As part of the settlement, Patti must also pay the plaintiff's attorney fees.

Exactly! That woman took total advantage that Patti is famous. Patti just spoke her mind.A lot of parents just let their kids run wild anywhere. Patti just said what everybody wants to say. I bet Patti let her have it . Now she has to suffer the consequences for being honest. I'm #TeamPatti on this one.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I don't know anything about children, but isn't 18 months a bit young to see this kind of change?

Patti could have taken a measured approach by notifying hotel security of an unattended child on the premises. She instead decided to assail the mother, spilling water on her and allegedly scaring the child. And through it all, Patti brought this on herself.

Same here. I like her too, but for her to settle, then the accusation must be true. [Edited 9/7/12 12:37pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Exactly. These accusations have damage a part of her legend. It proves she's quite unstable and needs restraint. Some wanna bash Randy Travis (not here) for what he did but think people brought it on themselves if someone as beloved in R&B circles as Patti is "confronts" them. That's a problem right there. I have a hunch she might settle in the case with that cadet too.

That women I'm sure egged Patti on because of who she was. She saw $ signs in her eyes. Her child was not traumatized . i'm sure her child has heard & seen worse being.in Ny of all places with those rude people there. Ny peeps always speak their minds..#TEAMPATTI. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Damage a part of her Legend?...LOL...Yeah right....Miss Patti ain't got NOTHING on ALL the Alcoholics, Drug Addicts, Gamblers, Adulterers & Murderers in the Entertainment Industry...
Patti has been singing on the road for 52yrs and this is the ONLY thing that happens in her Stellar Career and you say she's unstable? If you made a comment like that about Patti in Front of Prince he'd have a few choice-words for you...That's not my opinion that is a FACT...
And then you defend Randy Travis's arrest for driving around his town Drunk & Naked...Wow...

Did you see how the tot-Demon-Mom's Lawyer continued to Flap his Rotten Gums in the article? "Patti settled so quick, she didnt want to have that child point her out in the court room, She settled before i could become a FAMOUS Meat-wagon chaser."..His no good Country Ass...
Those scum-bags didnt have to release any statement to the Public after Paiti agreed to pay every damn thing...But since they didnt get press from a trial they had to send pictures to the press and make statements about winning Patti's money...
There isnt a Judge in Manhattan that would have given tot-Demon-Mom a 100,000 settlement...At most a judge would have ordered Patti to pay for tot-Demon's therapy...Patti should have NEVER settled out of court..
