Donny Hathaway or Marvin Gaye?

I stan for Donny ALL day. Marvin just doesn't mean much to me.

Marvin 4 me. I've never been a huge Donny fan. I think he was a wonderful singer, but I'm a bigger Marvin fan.

Marvin Gaye was the greatest artist of the 70's in my opinion. His majestic voice, his sexual image, his wonderful messages. Why did he have to leave us, such a talent sad

You should read the David Ritz book. It gives you a good glance into his psyche. The man was a genius and crazy at the same time.

It's sad to say, but he basically caused his own death. Personally I think if Tammi hadn't died had such a young age, neither would have Marvin.

Donny. Marvin's voice is bland. But...Marvin had better material overall.

Now this is a tough one for me.

Both had phenominal talent, that has had immeasurable impact on my musical upbringing and well-being. I can only choose between the two, based on the mood I'm in.

If I'm in an introverted mood, it's Donny.

If I'm in an extroverted mood, it's Marvin.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Both of them were actually matched up by their talent and their behavior though Donny was deemed legally paranoid.

I'm in that same boat.

Yeah paranoid schizophrenia. It's the same thing. Donny was deemed this around 1971 or 1972.

Did he seek out diagnosis and that is how it came out?

Eulalah Hathaway, his wife, said that she noticed how Donny would go into his mood swings and she tried to ask his musicians what did they do when he would go into his mood swings, they all said "we were watching him" and Eulalah said something to the fact of "thanks a lot (sarcastically) but I gotta do a lot more than watch." So she took him to the doctor and they diagnosed him to see if something was wrong with him and that's when she heard "yeah he has paranoid schizophrenia". Treatment of this disease wasn't widely known at the time so they gave him medication to treat it. Donny's youngest daughter said when Donny was living with her mother (one of Donny's girlfriends during his split with Eulalah), there were times she could deal with Donny's issues and then when she wouldn't, she leave. The woman didn't quite tell her what would made her leave but it leaves you to believe the man was off his rockers.

Simply because he released the greatest pop album of all time, I will

go with Gaye.

...and Stevie over Hathaway as well.

Seriously though, I think Donny's illness hampered whatever impact he did have. Stevie and Marvin were able to create great legacies. But Donny's, while great himself, was hampered by the fact that his illness basically crippled him.

To answer the question... Marvin Gaye NO QUESTION. Now I LOVE Donny but Marvin Gayes overall work cant be touch.

I dont get all these comments about Marvin having a bland voice confused That man says two words and it speaks to my soul, so full of emotion and story nothing bland about Marvins singing but maybe your ears might be bland and need to get checked confused

Yea I can probably count on one hand how many singers give me that feeling... Marvin is definitly one of them!

Donny has an amazing voice as well a very very very very underrated voice indeed.

It ain't that serious. lol I don't mind script's comment (and I said what I said just to get a response of course wink ) but seriously if she thinks that, that's her. Marvin's the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) to me but her comments don't hurt.
