This thread is seriously lacking in food for thought. So we're going to do it "Pot Luck" style!

That means..."Everybody...bring a damn dish!" wink

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Marvin.

I own two Donny disc. One with Roberta Flack (which I love.) Last year, I bought his second album (self titled) cause it was 4 bucks at Wal-Mart and I was really disappointed with it. I liked it, but I expected much more.

One thing I do admit some of his albums left a lot to be desired. His best one was his very first one. I never cared for the Donny/Roberta collabos except for probably three songs.

eek Yes.

I wouldnt pick Donny over Marvin BUT Donny is an incredible vocalist. His very underrated. I think Donny is just as strong as a vocalist as Marvin BUT Marvin has a much much stronger catalogue thats really not really comparable to most artists the same with Stevie Wonder which is why I dont have clue why they were being compared to Donny.

MadamGoodnight

BOTH can bring me to tears.

Donny singing

*giving up is hard to do, when you really love someone*, or

*and when my life is over, remember when we were together, we were alone and I was singing this song to you*

Marvin singing

*distant lover, you should think about me, say a prayer for me*

bawl bawl bawl

SING IT!

They both had such beautiful voices.

Let's not get carried away. There hasn't been a Christmas for as long as I can remember and I was born in 1970, that this Donny Hathaway song hasn't been a staple of the season.

An eternal work, like a hymn or something. cool

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

"This Christmas" is THE Black National Xmas song. It's not Xmas for me until I hear that. I would also bet that "This Christmas" is the main reason most people know about Donny.

"Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

U sound like me. When Rhino reissued his albums in the 90s, I rushed out to get them after hearing all of these people say how he influenced thier music. I started listening and loved his voice, but didn't really get the music. Like you, I tend to prefer his duets with Roberta over his solo work.

His "music" is some what limited compared 2 Marvin, but his vocals are ridiculas.
