My two big sisters had a lot of albums when I was a kid, circa 85-95, so I bought my first albums during the late-90s...
probably MJ (HIStory), Beatles , Rolling Stones (Babylon), Bowie (Earthling, Hours) Aerosmith (Big Ones, Nine Lives), Spice Girls (Spice, Spiceworld), Suede (Coming Up), TLC, Fugees & L.Hill, Moby (Play), stuff like that...

jillybean: No Thriller on your list with a name like that? sorry I had to ask
HIStory would have been in my top 10, but it was too expensive on CD, I didn't want it on cassette though it was cheaper. I ended up getting it close to mid 96' for my birthday and missed the top 10

A lot of these lists are suspiciously good. I have a feeling some of you are leaving off some of your more embarassing early purchases.

Not I. I had limited funds in high school so I had to be very picky. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I only started with music. I left off the records I such as Wonder Woman and Superman that came with a picture book that you look at while the record tells a story. We didn't have VCRs back then (well they were around but they costed over a thousand dollars) so there were a lot more primitive but creative ways to entertain kids back then. I also didn't list the Easter album my grandmother bought me with Peter Cottontail and Easter Bonnet. Andy is a four letter word.

Same here. I saved up enough to buy albums by "collection" the pocket change my dad would put down on the counter every night when he got home from work. * * *

I still have some, but don't have a player. I thought about buying one at a used stereo place where they restore them, but haven't got around to it. I threw a lot of the 8-tracks away, because the foam deteriorated, and so were unplayable. There's a record store nearby that sells used 8-track tapes for about a dollar. I have all of Nelly's albums except the last couple. I'm not embarrased about anything. It seems I'm the only one who had children's records. I had more than the ones I posted, but I picked those myself, most of the others were bought for me or were 45s. I had a Sesame Street Monsters album that I won at school in the 1st or 2nd grade.
If you're ashamed of stuff and call it "guilty pleasures" or "cheesy", why buy it in the first place? Prince-1999 I was a wee 8 year old...saved my allowance ($5) for two weeks to buy 1999. Got to the wrecka stow and instead of the usual $9.99 it was $13.99 IIRC (damned double album!). My father refused to pony up a penny let alone another $5 for Prince, so we left. I was DEVASTATED...in tears..and my dad didnt care. A few days later, my mom went back to the store and bought it for me.
My mom started building my collection after that. She bought me all of the Time, Sheila E, Vanity 6, etc. The next album I remember buying was...
The Bangles-A Different Light Just for "Manic Monday", but I ended up becoming a fan. Susannah Hoffs
Prince-Sign O The Times The first Prince album I ever had on casette (all I ever listened to was vinyl). I hate to admit it, but I actually stole it from Tower Records. I went to Sam Goody a week or two later and bought it on wax.
Run DMC-Raising Hell The first concert I ever went to...June 1987, the day after the last day of 7th grade...Run DMC and the Beastie Boys at the San Diego Sports Arena. I actually went to see the Beastie Boys, but Run DMC tore the fucking house down! I walked across the street from the Sports Arena to Tower Records and bought "Raising Hell" right after the show.
Wendy and Lisa I was so mad at Prince for dropping the girls...then I heard they were coming out with their own album. Once I got it, WOW. Sign O The Times and Wendy and Lisa were all I listened to for the entire summer of 1987.
NWA-Straight Outta Compton Blew our fucking minds! Finally some niggas from the west coast were seriously doing something in hip hop (fuck the LA Dream Team and the Egyptian Lover!). To me, this (and Nirvana's Nevermind) is the most groundbreaking album ever. Not the best, but this shit changed the hip hop world FOREVER. Many will complain that it changed for the worst, but when Straight Outta Compton dropped, it was AWESOME.
Curtis Mayfield-Superfly My dad had this album on wax, but he got pissed when he found out I was grooving to a lot of his old records (James Brown, Parliament, Bobby Womack) late at night without his permission and he banned me from his collection. This one I had to buy. I used to play it constantly and my friends wanted nothing to do with it. Years later, when hip hop folks sampled it to death, they all wanted to borrow it. SUCKAS!!!!!!!!!!!
Those are the ones I distinctly remember, but there were more. Now..my Prince CD collection began in 1990. I won a radio contest when "Graffiti Bridge" was coming out. I won tickets to the San Diego premiere, a 2hr VHS tape full of Prince videos (not all of them, but most), and EVERY Prince CD from For You to Graffiti Bridge. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People's tastes change. I certainly don't like the same songs now that I did when I was in elementary school. I think that's what this thread is about--to see what you were into when you were younger and how different, if at all, it is to what you're into now.
