I like the song and the pairing as well.

I bet 99% of y'all in this thread talking about:
It made me wince
It sucks
Eddie Murphy shoulda stopped before he began
...are only saying this because you've been told that this song/video is corny. The fact of the matter is that the only thing its guilty of is being dated.
Otherwise, I like seeing the two most successful black men in Hollywood circa early 90s together, hanging out and kicking it.

Nah I ain't have to be told nothing. I ain't sheeple. It's not that good. But if you like it, it's all good.

Which reminds me,,,,
I noticed that MJ was in his vocal peak from 1987-96. But I wonder, did he ever sing in his alleged natural baritone/Barry White-like tone in any of the songs that didn't make it to the official tracklists?
That "Michael decieved folks with his soft voice" allegations gave me a long pause.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think he only did the baritone in his background vocals... it was alleged he did baritone in some parts of "2000 Watts" but some people are trying to debunk it.

This song contains the worst refrain in the history of music. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
"Water can nourish me, but water can also carry me. Water has magic laws." - JCVD

Why isn't it "that good" then?
What is it about this video/song that makes it not any better or worse than any other video released during its time?
I think that most of y'all in this forum are so afraid of what other people will think about your taste, that you pose. But this video/song is harmless. Its not a spectacular piece of art but the feigned embarrassment from watching is simply because Eddie Murphy as a vocalist was never taken seriously.
Judge the art for the art itself - nevermind who's making it. "Whatzupwitu" hardly makes me wince or blush for liking it.

So now we can't have an opinion?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Not that I thought MJ had psychic abilities, but whose idea was that anyways?
Whatever. I don't even remember liking this one bit. Not then. Not now. Watching it all the way through hurts my soul.

I did judge the art. It's not even "art" man. You actually stomach the video?!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm unable to listen to anything with Eddie Murphy's serious "singing" voice on it. I just can't stand it. If he had been comical with the music, I'd be able to tolerate it. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
"Water can nourish me, but water can also carry me. Water has magic laws." - JCVD

Yes.
I like Eddie Murphy, I like MJ, I like watching them together and I am not in the least bit offended, embarrassed or think the refrain is the worst in musical history.
And the constituents of art is highly debatable.
I don't know what you guys see in this video that makes it so abhorrent but I think it's a bit over the top.
To each his own! | |

And? So what? You're really trying to debate about this? "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Terrible. Eddie couldn't hang with Mike's voice. Mike tried to be nice, but cut up at the end. He couldn't hold it any longer. Eddie, please go somewhere and tell some jokes, damn.

Why did I come in this thread? Because of this thread I went to watch the video on youtube. Almost spit out my drink.
@ 1:46-1:55 in the video. I wonder what Eddie would say if he had to watch this video today? I just CAN'T with the two of them. A hot ass mess from beginning to end.

Disagree. Michael's voice was the ish in the 70's and early 80's as well. His voice was extremely soulful on songs with The Jacksons and on "Off The Wall". Later on, "Invincible" once again showed that he still had it vocally. His voice sounded a bit more mature due to age of course, but his voice was absolutely stunning on "Invincible". He could always sing. I just wonder why he lip synched so much later on in his career, but that's a whole different topic altogether... "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

I didn't say it wasn't.
But to me, the time frame when MJ used all of his vocal dimensions - or at least the moments that was caught on wax - where he really strecthed himself emotionally, was during the period that I highlighted earlier.
I felt that during the 70's and 80s, he was still searching for his vocal identify and somehow held back. It wasn't until the 87-96 period where MJ let it all hang out vocally, back front and centre.
Take "Earth Song", ain't no way in hell an Off The Wall/Thriller era MJ could pull that off. I think it all boils down to the experience he went through up to that point, that shaped his singing style.

I feel the same way about that time frame. His voice definitely was at its prime that time. He also sounded real good on the Invincible album.

Eddie was the one who was responsible for pairing MJ with Teddy Riley for Dangerous. MJ returned the favor and appeared on this song and video. That's the only reason MJ is involved! [Edited 3/11/12 20:44pm]
