Misunderstood Songs

Every Breath You Take- A Chaotic song written after Stings failed marriage often seen as a cute love song. I remember a quote by Sting saying a couple said they used that as there wedding song and he just said ''good luck'' lol.

I Would Die 4 U- Often seen by most as a love song, but also known to be about Jesus.

Born In The U.S.A- A song criticizing the U.S, but most often seen as a patriotic anthem lol

The One I Love- R.E.M First top 10 hit, a kiss off to a dumped paramour. But another one seen as a cute love song.... despite the FIREEEEEEE call out confused

Perfect Day- The fact that this keeps turning up in commercials is conclusive proof of one of the following: a) Lou Reed’s perverse sense of humor remains undiminished by advancing years or b) he just doesn’t give a shit any more

Louie Louie- there’s always been a kinda tacit assumption that this song was somehow about something dirty, and while several interpretations over the years really have been pretty filthy — most notably Iggy Pop’s cover — there’s nothing inherently dirty about Richard Berry’s original lyric.

The Drug's Don't Work- the lyric actually deals with the slow, painstaking death of Ashcroft’s father from cancer.

What are some more?(:

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

"Reasons" by Earth Wind & Fire.

I crack up whenever I see Phillip Bailey's reaction in the documentary about folks telling him that they played this song in their weddings.

Two Lovers - Mary Wells (the song's title and the first two verses make you think she got two actual lovers but mentions in the last bit that it's the same person)

Reasons - EWF (I still don't understand why a breakup song is still a popular wedding staple?)

Louie Louie - The Kingsmen cover (which most covered from; the singer forgot the lyrics so he mumbled some parts; it was nothing graphic)

Light My Fire - The Doors ("Girl we couldn't get much higher" was always miscontrued as a lyric for "getting high" but it isn't that at all)

Mary Jane - Rick James (it's about weed, not an actual girl)

In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins (in the U.S., people keep wondering if in the lyrics on the first verse was about Phil seeing a man drowning but Phil said he don't know what the hell it's about since he wrote the song in a pissed off mood - and it's understandable because the song's meaning is not really known at all)

Afternoon Delight - The Starland Vocal Band (I wonder how many grannies were mad when they found out this song was about knocking boots outdoors evillol )

White Horse - Laid Back (I wonder how many still don't know the song was about heroin and when they mention "white pony" as something you should "ride", they mean powder cocaine lol)

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (not necessarily for the title or the song itself but people always thought he said "excuse me while I kiss this guy". falloff )

Purple Haze has definitely been misunderstood. Most people think it's about getting high when it's not.

Yeah I read the lyrics. I don't know how people think this song is literally about drugs (most of the songs during the psychedelic era wasn't about drugs contrary to popular belief).

Same thing with the Temptations' "Cloud 9". When you read the lyrics, it wasn't about drugs either but about FINDING YOURSELF.

I don't know if this counts or not but when Kanye came out with "Jesus Walks" I know some folks were trying to pass it off as a gospel rap song. rolleyes Irritated me to no end. I think the song was even nominated for a Stellar Award. Like really tho? Just because "God" is in the lyrics its supposed to be claimed as a gospel song? sigh disbelief

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Bitches Ain't Shit...- Dr. Dre

When people found out this song was on The Chronic, a huge number of female activist groups came out denouncing it for its misogynist lyrics ("Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks, lick on your nuts and suck ya dick"), not realizing it was a diss track towards Eazy E.

Ina Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly

I believe it was supposed to be called "In The Garden of Eden". but the singer who wrote this was smashed out of his mind when he put it to paper, but liked the unitelligible lyrics so much the band decided to keep it.
