Don't seem like it did but I keep hearing that whenever Aretha sung in church, C.L. was jealous because Aretha sounded like her mother. Also Rev. Franklin was on some Rev. Marvin Gay, Sr./Bill Wyman type shit with some female members of his congregation. One of his illegitimate daughters was with a teenage congregation member. Rev. Franklin was a man whore. I'm thinking for you to run off and leave your children behind, it was more to it than philandering. I think Barbara was also physically abused and told to be put in her place. Apparently C.L. never married again after Barbara left him. He didn't even attend her funeral.
What you talkin' about hell C.L. made a pass at all the women and lil' girls his congregation, my understanding is many a gun and knife was pulled on that fool. It's a by the grace of something some didn't shoot or stab him. C.L. was notorious, my grandmother said, when he came to town he'd scope the congregation like rock musicians scope for women in the audience. Does anyone have a copy of American Masters, they speak of Barbara a lil'. Again trying to be balanced the reason given for C.L. taking those kids was he could provide for them. If I recall when Aretha/siblings visted Buffalo NY though she stayed with her maternal grandmother, her mother appeared in and out. Mostly out.... during her brief life.

That's the truth! My favorite aunt who was on the gospel circuit in the mid-50s had a fling with Rev. Franklin,

^ I heard most popular gospel acts were doing the same thing blues and rock acts would do. Yeah they might've been singing about The Good Word but they had women (and even young girls) chasing them. Sam Cooke had to deal with several paternity lawsuits from women he bedded when he was with the Highway QC's and the Soul Stirrers.
Marvin used to talk about when he was little and his father took him with him to gospel concerts in what they called the inteniary circuit, he saw several gospel stars get high, buzzed on booze and fool around on their wives with other women. The same gospel acts going "praise the Lord" onstage were the same who would "sin" when the concerts were over. [Edited 2/23/12 22:15pm] |

Hell yeah! They were doing it up just as much as the secular artist! They all use to hang. My aunt had a photo book with all of the people on that circuit. She use to cook for Sam Cook & do his hair, Couldn't stand Billie Holiday's smoking, dated CL Franklin & Lou Rawls and I just found out one of her daughter's my cousin's father is one of the Blind boys of Mississippi. She got around but she was a cool lady, I miss her...she had the best stories. I wish I had foresight enough to record her memoirs before she past. [Edited 2/23/12 22:46pm] |

My mother's family or I should my grandmother church was Satified... which they now call Charismatics. (Yes, I left a s out because Black people don't use it anyways) I attended that church a young girl, the mess that when on made the soaps look like "Mary Freakin' Poppins". Good sangin' tho. |

yeah, but today, I think they are worse, because of all the closet cases. There are great singers in gospel music, I don't have any respect for genre because of the hipocracy. Oh well, folks gotta believe in something... I guess. |

Yep. God forgive me but Pentecostal church is all the way live. My goodness as Timmy mentioned...., you had to stay high or drunk during the weekday. Every Sunday they preached to you HELL anyways. My mother told me as a young girl she was scared stupid because they kinda left out if you asked for God forgiveness, you sins would be forgiven. Any mistake any slip up whatever you're going straight to hell, don't pass go.

Maybe Black churches had the abbreviated, "CliffsNotes" edition of King James Bible. They didn't have time to talk about forgiveness, they just need to tell ya over and over again your are sinning! |

And where all y'all finding out this gossip about C.L.?
Actually I think most of the info is in a book about C.L., I forgot the name of it but they pretty much confirmed what has been posted here. However there is gossip that C.L. possibly molested his daughter and that's how Clarence was born but I don't know how true that is and honestly don't want it to be. Aretha's fucked up.
Now I've always suspected that
And she was only 14, when she had him.. |

SINGING IN A STRANGE LAND by Nick Salvatore. Excellent read. It goes deep.
Tell of C.L.'s adoption by the Franklin man, the real father abandoned Rachel Walker (that woud have been the real last name of C.L. and Aretha).
Barbara met C.L. as he would go around preaching. She already had Vaughn from a previous relationship. C.L. adopted him and Vaughn didn't know C.L. was not his father for many years into adulthood.
Barbara had no money and that is why she did not take her kids to Buffalo. She had just gotten employed well and was planning to move her kids to Buffalo the year she died. Cause of death was a heart attack, but many say it was heart break over all the turmoil caused bt her husband. She and C.L. never divorced and he shipped the kids to her funeral, but he did not attend.

Most geniuses have esteem issues, and they need their confidence massaged confidently. You'd be surprised at what you read when you pick up some of their biographies and the way they all go out in hiding it, Aretha though - unlike them - doesn't give a hint of a fuck, thats why she didn't charm school it [Edited 2/24/12 4:05am] |

Women who don't like other women usually see them as competition. Either professionally, or romantically. It doesn't even matter if they're family.
