Madonna Hires ‘Decoy Clones’ for MDNA Tour

by: Amy Sciarretto
April 3, 2012

Multiple Madonnas? That’d be a dream come true for her legion of fans. But alas, there is only one Material Girl and in order to protect her privacy, she is employing lookalikes. Madge has reportedly hired a smattering of decoys and clones so as to confuse paparazzi and keep them at bay while she embarks on her ‘MDNA’ world tour next month.

The National Enquirer (thanks NME!) reports that Madonna is not interested in having the pap’s flashbulbs going off in her face, In effort to throw them off the scent — which likely smells like her new fragrance, Truth or Dare — she’s hired five decoys to keep photographers away from the real thing.

“It was her own idea and she conceived it both for protection and to stay private while enjoying down time,” an insider told the tab about Madge’s decision. “Five ladies will be made up to look like dead ringers.”

But the doppelgangers won’t just look like the singer. Madonna is apparently giving them lessons on how to walk, talk and act like her. So these will be Madge clones. It’s serious business for the singer if she is going to all this trouble.

The source also said, “On the tour, her ‘clone quintet’ will be sent out ahead of her to act as diversions when she exits hotels, restaurants, concert halls, or any public venue. It’s a brilliant decoy plan, and she’s betting it will work!”

Madonna may be onto something with “paparazzi test,” but we bet that a wily pap will still end up with a snap of her some how or some way. Let’s hope the decoys don’t do anything Madge wouldn’t. Then she may have to fend off the gossip and rumor mill if one of the faux Madonnas gets herself in some trouble.

looks like Australia is a sure thing.I found this on another forum......

A friend of mine was going to call Live Nation today about a 2nd New Orleans date and I asked her to ask about South America, Australia and other places. The person told her, and I am paraphrasing "The Australian part of the tour is going to be massive. She wants to play Australia until she is exhausted. She is focusing most of her energies on Australia at the expense of some South American and Japanese dates...meaning SA ( and Puerto Rico) was scaled back to make room for more Australia and Japan may have been canceled altogether for Australia time. She also wanted to do something unusual like South Africa but the Australian plans might have nixed that". Take that for what it is worth.

Madonna's On Top....Again
Material Girl Has Biggest First Week Debut This Year

BY PR NEWSWIRE

NEW YORK, April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Madonna has returned for the 8th time to the top of the Billboard's Pop Charts with MDNA selling 359,000 albums according to Neilsen Soundscan and is the biggest selling first week debut this year. MDNA is The Material Girl's fifth No. 1 studio album in a row and her first album for Interscope Records.
On the Billboard Dance Club Play Charts, Madonna remains queen of the clubs with two songs from MDNA in the Top Ten including "Girls Gone Wild" which has gone to No. 4 and is the "greatest gainer" for the last three weeks. Her first dance hit from MDNA "Give Me All Your Luvin" after going to No. 1 remains in the Top Ten in the No. 8 spot.

The critical response to MDNA has been equally impressive:
"Madonna has made it through the wilderness to deliver one of the best albums of her career." Daily News
"Her best album since "Ray of Light'" Chicago Tribune
"Still the Queen of Pop" The London Times
"Some of the finest musical moments we've heard from the pop legend in the last few years" MTV News
- "The woman is pop's most durable alpha female" USA TODAY

Other facts:
-MDNA debuted No. 1 on iTunes Charts in 40 countries and had the biggest one day pre sale on iTunes by any artist in history.

I disagree with all those points respectfully.

Not every artist wants radio commercial HITS as Madonna always shoots for. If that was not the point of this album I HIGHLY doubt she would have released that shitty ass single Give Me All Your Love as a first single.

While Madonna contributed to some songwriter and concepts, she has always had help with other songwriters and producers so it hasnt been ALL on her own terms. Madonna is as manufactured as it comes. I dig alot of Madonna songs especially during the late 80s and 90s but I disagree with the point that your implying Madonna has never chased after hits when thats not true... AT ALL.

This shows your complete lack of knowledge when it comes to madonna.

Her career has been on her own terms for as far back as True Blue.

She chooses who she writes with and who produces, labels have never forced her to work with someone.

She's not manufactured, she has always been in charge of the sound and the look of her albums, music videos and tours.

Also how was NoVideo argueing that she never chases after hits, check the last sentence of the first paragraph.

[Edited 4/4/12 8:09am]

Hey, I have NO problem with peole who have hits, but there are artists who have hits with the music they make on their own (George Michael or Prince for instance) and there are artists who work with the right producer on the right time: justin Timberlake worked with Pharrel when he was hot and later with Timbaland. I love both albums but it´s clear these are commercial products, good ones but made to sell! Sure, they all wanna sell albums, even Prince and co, but some go further in doing it.I believe Madonna is in control since somewhere in the 80´s and she chooses the "hot" producers!

Madonna has been doing this also...and like I said, I love her hits from the 80´s till now...I just feel she tries more than before, just my opinion.

So she should work with 'just good enough' or 'cold' producers. Girl can't win. She aims to make good music that she and other people will enjoy, after all that's the point of music, it's a form of entertainment, right? She has a gift for catchy melodies and hooks, hence her commercial success. The producer just helps her with the sounds, she's the real magic behind the mixing desk.

Some fans set their expectations too high.We have to realize that there is nothing being done in pop music that is totally "new" or "fresh" these days.In 2012,is it even possible for Madonna (or anyone else) to break new ground? I don't think there is any producer (or team of producers) who could give Madonna a totally new, revolutionary sound that hasn't been done before.MDNA is as good as it's gonna get. This isn't directed at you personally, but I feel that some fans need to ask themselves....could it be that they are just over Madonna?

They won't be tunes we'll be hearing in a decade's time or anything

And that's fine.In my opinion, nobody is really making music that will be considered "classic" in a decade from now.The days of groundbreaking,innovative,life-changing music are over.Even Prince can't seem to come up with a stunning, mindblowing album that compares to his 80s classics. But to be fair,we can't really expect these people to.The musical landscape is so much different these days.Fans who are waiting around for another Ray Of Light or Like A Prayer are going to be really disappointed. You can't repeat something like that. The same applies to Prince,Janet Jackson,Stevie Wonder and any other artist who's been around for many years.

Janet Jackson, in my opinion, has never made an album that I would consider even remotely 'classic' lol

But, I've always loathed her voice, and songs anyways, so it's hard for me to be objective about it.I remember one year all I heard on the radio was Janet and Creed. I almost slit my wrists.

Anyways, I think there's so much wonderful stuff being created and released now, and I think certainly some of it will be played 10 years from now. I also think Prince's 3121 and lotusflow3r will be looked at more favorably in the future.

However, I'm not looking for Madonna to invent her own sound like a polka-kabala-techno-country bluegrass hybrid or anything like that. It would just be nice if she had a great album--THAT would be fresh and new to me. MDNA is really just American Life 4.0 as far as I'm concerned. It's been the same old same old release after release now. I spun the album 3 times, and only remember 2 tunes off the top of my head.

The good news is that I don't hate the album after the third listen. Prince's more recent releases have had that affect on me. lol

See,to me...this album doesn't sound anything like American Life lol That's one thing that I have always loved about Madonna.Every album is different.I mean,MDNA is dance/pop just like the two albums that came before it,but there's a different vibe throughout. You certainly can't say that this album sounds like Hard Candy, lol.I don't think this album is groundbreaking or anything, but it's a solid collection of songs.

Editor's Note: What Role Did Bundling and Exclusives Play in Madonna and Justin Bieber's Big Debuts?

April 04, 2012
By Bill Werde (@bwerde), New York

Madonna has the no. 1 album on this week's Billboard 200. She sold 359,000 copies of MDNA compared to Lionel Richie's Tuskegee, which opens with a really impressive 199k first week. But many of Madonna's sales came through a bundle option, in which fans who purchased tickets for her upcoming tour received a code that could be redeemed for either a physical CD or a digital download of the album.

There are plenty of people crying foul on both fronts. Those people should probably calm down. Both examples offer a glimpse into the complicated, largely experimental and ever-changing world of marketing, distributing and monetizing new releases in today's marketplace.

Of Madonna's 359,000 sold, trusted sources tell Billboard that somewhere in the area of 185,000 came from the bundle/redemption code. Sacre bleu, you say, doing math: 359 - 180 = 179. Mr. Richie's 199,000 is the true king-making total this week!

But that's completely ridiculous. With all respect deserved and paid to the beloved songs of Mr. Richie, think about two important points. One: Madonna fans who redeemed that code are not receiving the album for free. The price of Madonna's album was bundled into the ticket purchase. I can understand why there's confusion about this. Even the CEO of Ticketmaster tweeted that fans buying tickets got "a free copy of MDNA." (The March 30 tweet has since been taken down). Such is the less-than-fully-transparent nature of bundling.

But let's take a hypothetical for a second: the cost of MDNA wasn't bundled into the ticket price, or that Billboard doesn't count those sales. All 185,000 fans who used the Madonna redemption code were the first in line to buy tickets to her tour. These are her top fans, each of whom were eager to shell out anywhere from $50 to more than $350 for a seat. If no bundle existed, do you really think a large portion of these fans wouldn't have purchased the album? We'll never know for certain, of course. But I think it's a more than safe bet that Madonna has the no. 1 album in the U.S. under any circumstance - joining her deserved no. 1 debuts in at least 17 other countries, according to manager Guy Oseary's tweets.

For context, here are her recent albums' first-week sales, per Nielsen SoundScan:

2008 - Hard Candy - 280K
2005 - Confessions on a Dance Floor - 350K
2003 - American Life - 240K
2000 - Music - 420K
1998 - Ray of Light - 371K

So you can see, given that MDNA has a nice buzz and single going, it's pretty much beyond reason to think that suddenly this album would sell substantially less than any recent one Madonna has released.

That said, let's wait and see what the drop-off is next week on sales of MDNA. Second weeks tend to follow a fairly predictable curve. And while it's far from a perfect science, it's one of the best bullsh-- detectors out there for an inflated first week. Billboard's head of charts Silvio Pietroluongo says that an iconic pop star's album will generally drop anywhere from 65 to 80 percent second week. If MDNA drops a lot more than that, it'll be an indication of the degree of first week inflation caused by bundling.

You would think. lol Unfortunately some folks are so eager to try and diminish any of her success and accomplishments that little things like "common sense" and "reality" go flying out the window. But when Billboard magazine says "that's ridiculous", then I think it's safe to say they can take a flying leap. It's funny, Madonna has been the target of this kind of BS her entire career, and she just keeps going, #1 after #1, huge mega tour after tour, laughing at her critics and naysayers. She always gets the last laugh. cool

Yeah, I don't really get to a lot of shows (i sorta hate dealing with crowds) and whenever Madonna's been around to either DC or NY I've either been unable to go for some reason, or didn't have the funds, or whatever the reason might be just didn't make it. But when I heard she was coming back to DC I knew I had to go this time, can't miss out on seeing a legend when the opportunity arises. Can't wait!! Gonna be an awesome show. I hope she mines the catalogue for some nuggets. I'm hoping for "Rescue Me"

For some reason,PerezHilton wants her to perform that song, too lol He tweeted her about it.

LOL i can't stand Perez Hilton, but I'll agree with him on this cool

Would love to hear a couple lesser known singles... "Keep it Together" would be awesome, "You'll See" if she needs a big epic ballad... so many great songs, its gotta be a challenge to put a setlist together. I'd love to hear a couple "American Life" tracks get revived... "Nobody Knows Me" and "Nothing Fails" in particular. That album was really underrated. Hope she doesn't neglect "Hard Candy" too... "Give it 2 Me" should make an appearance, or "Heartbeat".

The Billboard 200 Champ and Runner-Up Catch Up Online
After Madonna scored her eighth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 yesterday with "MDNA" and Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" bowed at No. 2, the pair exchanged tweets, congratulating each other and joking about their past.

Madonna started the Twitter love-fest, sending "Congrats on a successful record. To the other Richie in my life," to her fellow chart-topper. Richie replied, "What's going on family? Can you believe we are sitting on the top of the charts together again? There is no one I would rather be on top with. Congratulations!! I am so happy for you," to which Madonna joked, "OK, but as long as I'm on top."

Madonna Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Lionel Richie at No. 2

Between replies, both received tweets from across the entertainment industry, with Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Kelly Ripa and more offering their congratulations to one of the artists.

Madonna continued to joke with Richie, asking, "Remember when we were neighbors?"

He replied, "Do I remember?!?! ... The only problem I had is when I came out of my house the fans would ask me where you live? I was the tour guide for the street. The neighborhood was never the same after you left."

And in response to Madonna's "You still live in that shithole?" Richie answered, "Hell no!! I moved out right behind you. The street wasn't exciting anymore."

"MDNA" sold 359,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan, and is Madonna's fifth straight studio album to debut at No. 1. A slot behind her on the Billboard 200 is Richie's "Tuskegee," which starts with 199,000 -- his best sales week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

Madonna also tweeted @Billboard to tell us how she felt after scoring her first No. 1: "The same way that I feel now. Elated, grateful, like all my Christmases have come at once."
