Interesting that I've heard almost all of the names above as being on the guest list of Davis' party tonight. Looks like it may have become more of a memorial planning session for tomorrow.

Houston remembered at Clive Davis gala

By MESFIN FEKADU, Associated Press – 39 minutes ago

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — More than two decades ago, Clive Davis introduced a young woman with a scintillating voice to the music industry at his annual pre-Grammy soiree: Whitney Houston.

On Saturday night, hours after Houston's death at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Davis — Houston's mentor, producer, champion and longtime friend — memorialized her at this year's gala, held downstairs from the same hotel where she died.

With celebrities ranging from Dr. Dre to Tony Bennett in attendance, a somber Davis, reading from a sheet of paper, said: "I personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me. She was full of life, looking forward for tonight. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrated music."

He added: "Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage ... so many times. So simply put: Whitney would have wanted the music to go on."

He dedicated the evening to her and asked for a moment of silence as a photo of the 48-year-old, hands wide open, looking to the sky, appeared on the screen.

Then, he said with excitement: "Now ladies and gentlemen, let the music begin."

Tony Bennett, the evening's first performer, recounted other recent big-name deaths in the music industry. "First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston. Let's legalize drugs, like Amsterdam, it's a very sane city now."

He added that Winehouse was "the greatest singer I've ever heard in my life."

The scene was somewhat surreal given Houston's shocking death only earlier in the day. But Grammy President and CEO Neil Portnow, who called Houston a friend, said "canceling the party was never an option."

"A lot of us holding hands tonight, on each other's shoulders ... We'll be celebrating," he said. "The legacy she left will be here forever."

He announced that Jennifer Hudson would perform a tribute to Houston at Sunday's Grammys.

Earlier in the evening, India.Arie said Houston "set the standard for what it is to be a great female artist."

Producer Jimmy Jam said her death was a "bittersweet irony" given that Davis heralded Houston as a great talent to watch when he had her perform at his party in her youth.

"The fact that it happened on this day, this event is where Clive Davis introduced Whitney to the world. We said hello to Whitney at the Clive Davis (gala), it may be appropriate we're saying our first goodbyes to Whitney at a Clive Davis event.

"In a weird way it's appropriate, the show must go on. I think Whitney would have wanted that to happen. ... Tonight I think we begin to celebrate and remember."

Death brings out a lot of armchair could've should've would've, but I think we should be a bit slower to judge. This goes both for Whitney and those family, friends and industry peers who survive her.

I certainly see people doing and saying things (or not doing and saying things) in the wake of this terrible news that I find odd. But I like to give the benefit of the doubt that people cope with moments like this the best they can. I think we should give them (Bobby, Clive Davis and his partygoers, Diana Ross, etc.) space.

I hear ya...as I was just saying a few posts above, I thought about it some more and maybe people don't quite know what the hell to do. It's not an everyday occurance for most people.

I still hope they shut it down early though, sad

Has Aretha been performing?, cause she doesn't need any rehearsal time to belt one out.

That would be incredible.

You know Aunt 'Ree will have to send her off properly... but I think she will probably sing at the funeral; not some award show. Whitney was personal to Aretha... Aretha was her godmother (chosen when Whitney was born).

Like I was telling Lamma, I realize that everybody was caught off guard but I really think they should call it a night at this point.

Perhaps they could have played some of her songs and let those who wanted to speak say a few words but that's about it.

BOBBI KRISTINA Denied Access to SeeWhitney's Body

0211_whitney_houston_bobbi_kristina_ex
Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina got into an angry shouting match with police officers outside the hotel room where her mother was found dead ... TMZ has learned.

According to law enforcement sources ... Bobbi Kristina showed up on the 4th floor of the Beverly Hilton several hours after Whitney's death. We're told when officers informed her no one was allowed to see the body -- BK screamed, cursed and demanded to see her mother.

Ultimately, she was not allowed into the room and left. We're told Whitney's cousinDionne Warwick also showed up later. She too was turned away by officers.

As we reported earlier ... other family members and friends -- who were in the room when authorities arrived -- identified Whitney's body.

That's why I'm saying they should probably call it a night before someone else says or does something weird. hmm

I don't see things improving by drawing the evening out any longer.

With all due respect, dont pull the race card on this. This aint the time nor the place. Whitney was a grown-ass woman, and she made poor decisions along the way (as we all tend to from time to time). Maybe you're right when you say the (ahem) "White Industry Suits" (nice avatar by the way) DO market a trash culture, but Bobby is to blame for Whitney's downfall, and you are in fucking denial if you disagree.

So which is she, a grown-ass woman, or a victim of Bobby Brown?

A grown-ass woman who eventually became a victim..

I was never a huge whitney fan but I absolutely recognized her as the best voice of her generation. I also think she had her own charisma and presence, my favorite memory of her will always be watching The Bodyguard-the scene where her headset blows up and she freaks out. That was quintessential whitney, glamorous but cute and goofy at the same time. The black folk in the audience busted out laughing as did I. As far as her and Bobby goes, I was on board with a lot of people in blaming him for ruining her life, I guess we stereotype women as being more emotional and irrational so it looks like our little Whitney got involved with a total Jackass. I don't know how true that is and I doubt if any of the rest of you do either. Finally, the "told you so" types of posts and preachy posts are not necessarily wrong but in bad taste. People did the same after Michaels death, like they couldn't even give his fans a few days to mourn and deal with the shock. Of course Whitney will not have that kind of impact but it strikes me as more than a little meanspirited to gloat about her death. It's tragic, the loss of a gorgeous, talented woman.

I see Clive is carrying on like nothing happened, I remember hearing how he sabotaged or derailed the ambitions of Phyllis Hyman to some degree because he couldn't control her like he wanted and took over a young girl named Whitney Houston instead. The business is dangerous corrupt and chews up and spits out talent.

I have to ask why does the I'm Your Baby Tonight album get shit on so much? it got awful reviews from critics. And even is not highly regarded by many Whitney fans.....

Idk why, after re-listening to it, the production by Babyface & co is great, sure it's dated but who cares?

And the lyrics deal with some serious subjects this time around, and people always bitched about her doing nothing but love songs. She took on some deeper material and people still where not happy? lol lord

I love all the songs she put out from that album. I'm guessing people weren't expecting Whitney to go R&B and new jack swing on 'em. "Miracle" was a song that would've been more familiar to them but the title track, "All the Man That I Need" and "My Name is Not Susan" endeared her to R&B audiences. Some say that album was a response to her mixed reaction at the 1989 Soul Train Awards (where she was booed).
