I remember seeing him walking around lost & upset going off,when I attended the last Soul Train Awards that he was handling here in La a few years ago. He was not happy that no one showed up to support it. Jennifer Hudson was the biggest one that came. I hope that the takeover of that award show was his doing or maybe he couldn't handle it anymore. Don Cornelius, the producer and television host who created the television dance show “Soul Train,” was found shot dead in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday morning, and detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department were looking trying to determine if his death was a suicide.

A person at the producer’s house on Mulholland Drive in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood called the police and reported shots had been fired just before 4 a.m., a police spokesman, Chris No, said. When officers arrived, they were let into the house and found Mr. Cornelius lying lifeless on the floor. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 75 years old.

“We don’t know if he committed suicide,” Mr. No said. “It’s still under investigation.”

“Soul Train” was one of the longest-running syndicated shows in television history and played a critical role in spreading the music of black America to the world, offering wide exposure to musicians such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson in the 1970s and 1980s.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of my friend, colleague and business partner Don Cornelius,” said Quincy Jones, according to the Associated Press. “Don was a visionary pioneer and a giant in our business. Before MTV there was ‘Soul Train.’ That will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius. His contributions to television, music and our culture as a whole will never be matched. My heart goes out to Don’s family and loved ones.”

Don Cornelius, creator of the long-running TV dance show "Soul Train," shot himself to death Wednesday morning at his Los Angeles home, police said. He was 75.

Officers responding to a report of a shooting found Cornelius at his Mulholland Drive home at around 4 a.m., police said. He was pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 4:56 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

"Soul Train" began in 1970 in Chicago on WCIU-TV as a local program and aired nationally from 1971 to 2006.

It introduced television audiences to such legendary artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White and brought the best R&B, soul and later hip-hop acts to TV and had teenagers dance to them. It was one of the first shows to showcase African-Americans prominently, although the dance group was racially mixed. Cornelius was the first host and executive producer."There was not programming that targeted any particular ethnicity," he said in 2006, then added: "I'm trying to use euphemisms here, trying to avoid saying there was no television for black folks, which they knew was for them."

Cornelius, who was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said in 2006 he remained grateful to the musicians who made "Soul Train" the destination for the best and latest in black music.

"I figured as long as the music stayed hot and important and good, that there would always be a reason for 'Soul Train,'" Cornelius said.

The series spawned a franchise that includes the Soul Train Music Awards, the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and the Soul Train Christmas Starfest.

Cornelius stepped down as "Soul Train" host in 1993.

In his later years, Cornelius had a troubled marriage. In 2009, he was sentenced to three years' probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor spousal battery. In his divorce case that year, he also mentioned having significant health issues.

WHAT! AHH NO! This gives me chills Don Cornelius shot himself? What a tragedy! Can't believe the news! This comes as a MASSIVE SHOCK! SO much death early 2012! If it wasn't for him, MUSIC & DANCING would NEVER be the same. He literally changed Dance and music in ways no one could! He firstly laid the foundation! May he REST IN PARADISE! My thoughts and prayers are with his family! We're SOUL!

He really layed it down in terms of video hosting! One of my biggest inspirations to work and study T.V hosting. I wish his whole family love, peace, and heaven!

DID I mention the style he had? He was one of the coolest and freshest cat to ever HOST! FOR sure!

i woke up 2 a text about this, turned on BET ..no news ..am i shocked? no this is the network that when james brown passed away didn't say anything all day until 2 am in the morning..

i didn't hear confirmation until i watched the view

2 reasons I bet he did this....

1) He had something like cancer and didnt want to die slow.

2) He was downlow and someone was going to come out and expose him.

Rich guys dont do this without a reason... their rich! Something was up and I bet it was one of those two things.

It must have been a secret because this is the first time I'm hearing of it. Besides, I don't think a 75 year old man would be worried about being on the DL.

I'm thinking he was just probably suffering from extreme depression. It's rampant among the elderly. People need to take depression more seriously. I bet most of us have someone in our lives who suffers from it and we don't even know it. People continue to live in shame and secrecy because of it, particularly in the black community.
