R U from the planet neptune????Prince did Soul Train on May 7 1994 episode 759
I'm thinking 355 was only saying that because at the time he was breaking out in the late 1970s that he didn't do Soul Train but did American Bandstand. It's said Don himself didn't want Prince on the show for the same reasons he didn't invite P-Funk.
Yea! I did hear that he didn't feel Prince was a good influence for Soul Train. But what matters is Prince did eventually go on there. But I think Prince didn't want to go on there anyway in the beginning. He made very few Tv appearances in his early career.Plus he would have never let Don interview him. Hence is why he went on there with Holly Robinson Peete as host & not Don.
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Yeah I didn't wanna say the "wild" factor was the ONLY reason Prince wasn't invited as early as 1979 (or even 1978), but yeah Prince didn't trust anyone doing interviews with him anyway which explains why he didn't talk much with Dick when he was on his show.
I kept reading Prince was too wild for Soul Train. I don't know. I don't even know if I believed it. I could've sworn someone on here said it. I know sometimes I'll be saying things that are inaccurate as fuck...
That's very possible. The very mention of Prince's name back in the day used to cause a lot of folks to get all nervous, lol. The radio wouldn't even play a lot of his songs, even the ones that didn't contain any profanity. People were just really scared of Prince, and I suppose each person had their different reasons.

I know he didn't want P-Funk on there just on the basis of Garry Shider's mostly-nude appearance (with the diaper and boots only apparel).
Yeah, I guess they were more unpredictable back then too. I guess Don wasn't taking any chances on one of those dudes whipping it out, lol. Plus, I don't know what Don's stand on drug use was, but Funkadelic, particularly in the early days, was pretty closely aligned with the drug culture.

True, P-Funk were psychedelic drug and weed advocates I think.

Most of Don's guest were on drugs. David Bowie was well known for his acid trips...Its just P-Funk was honest & open about it. And let's not forget Rick James who was on there several times...

Yeah, but he also was going for that crossover audience..
Going on a "Black show" [unquote] wouldn't help
He still should've went on there & did the same antics as he did on Bandstand
Remember, Don told Vanity, that if he comes on ST, he's gonna get interview, which means he was invited...

Ha! Yeah I remember that. So yeah he WAS invited.
True! I 4got about that to. But I never felt he wasn't invited. I felt he just didn't want to talk to Don. But Prince finally got his way....Like always...

If you're in Chicago, there's a Soul Train Marathon on WCIU Channel 26 until Midnight.g
I wonder if they're airing the local 1969-1970 shows...
As Don Cornelius himself mentioned in the Soul Train documentary, the shows he did in Chicago were never taped. And I would believe him, as the station he aired the early shows on (WCIU-TV channel 26) is a local independent station even today, and I'm sure back in 1970 it had as much coverage as a local TV access station has today.

I see...
yeah, don't ever remember seeing reruns of the local show
they only ran once..
if you missed it, that was it
alot of people in my hood, went on there & dance
if i'm not mistaken, i think the reruns occurred when Clint Gent took over for Don, while he was in L.A.
I remember seeing The Chi-Lites, 100 Proof Aged In Soul, Tyrone Davis, & Leroy Hutson on there.
A funny thing happen one time when Syl Johnson was on there & his record keep jumpin & scratchin, while performing
But he was a good sport
So you see, they didn't even have pre-tape song, they brought in the actual record.
Very generic back then
Surprise I remember that
Wow, little is known about Soul Train's real early years. I think it was said Don started Soul Train in 1968 or somewhere around then. I've saw some vintage (maybe late '60s) Soul Train photos and Don's hair wasn't even a Fro yet. Least it wasn't processed.

It actually started in 1970..
The local show kept going for a good while, even when it went syndicated...
I'm just cracking up at this. Cocaine is a helluva drug! R.I.P. to both Don and Rick.
