It's only a two edge sword in the sense that the chinese got acces to the WTO in return of submitting to western based rules they do not share at all.

Not exactly a two edge sword that cuts just as deep on both sides.

we need somebody to disagree and argue with us biggrin

or give an opinion on this:

This begs the questions:

Will globalisation - next to the internet (which is the ultimate form of it) - change the way we perceive intellectual property for good?

And: Will the industry be able to adapt and survive, or will it go down in a global pool of greed, incompetence and piracy?

Or: Will we, including China who knows how, "crack down" on the internet and the billions of people with their computers who make it?

There's so many changes that people are trying to adapt or not want to adapt. Things take absolute time. Will the record industry survive? Well, that depends on if they want it to survive. The industry is sinking, and even Stevie Wonder could see that. But then someone needs to chime in wink

Cool. And even better, you are a musician, so your opinion is even more interesting to me. What do you think dave? Is the industry and the world's mentality changing for the better of copyright or to its detriment? Where do you see solutions?

My experience and access to information is limited, so I can't really tell.

I can talk about theory, though.

Let's take China as an example. You correctly pointed out that the "losses" made there are not actual "losses", because the potential gain is hardly realistic there. We also don't want to lose their interest in music overall (even if they don't pay for it), because we'd lose them as potential customers. So there's no point in simply trying to shut that whole market down.

What I can imagine myself doing (speaking as a musician) is to either recognise myself as a big enough artist and people in China as a big enough market for me to tour that country and sell albums as part of the ticket price (like many artists, including Prince, did already).

If I'm not big enough as an artist anyway the mentality about copyright in China can't be a major concern to me and the potential losses cannot be that big.

You can't change a whole society (even if I personally try to show my audience the real value of music etc).

It's an easy "solution", although Im well aware it only concern a very small part of a huge net of different problems, but from a musician's point of view this is what I can imagine myself doing. I'm a bit of a limited expert when it comes to this topic. smile

Haha Well, to clear up any and all misunderstandings, my question to you personally is more along the lines of how you as a musician feel about the threats and opportunities of the internet and the nature and future of the western based music industry. I understand of course that your knowledge is limit on china and world trade issues and don't expect you to be an expert on anything really. Just very interested in your view as a musician on the way 'globalisation' hits you 'at home'. smile
