It's only a two edge sword in the sense that the chinese got acces to the WTO in return of submitting to western based rules they do not share at all.
Not exactly a two edge sword that cuts just as deep on both sides.

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
we need somebody to disagree and argue with us
or give an opinion on this:

There's so many changes that people are trying to adapt or not want to adapt. Things take absolute time. Will the record industry survive? Well, that depends on if they want it to survive. The industry is sinking, and even Stevie Wonder could see that. But then someone needs to chime in [Edited 11/19/11 14:36pm]

who would that 'someone' be?

I think you've pretty much shut this thread down with your list. Her term paper is done [Edited 11/20/11 19:18pm]

I'm still lurking and reading and interested in the recording industry!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Cool. And even better, you are a musician, so your opinion is even more interesting to me. What do you think dave? Is the industry and the world's mentality changing for the better of copyright or to its detriment? Where do you see solutions?

With MY work eh? | |

My experience and access to information is limited, so I can't really tell.
I can talk about theory, though.
Let's take China as an example. You correctly pointed out that the "losses" made there are not actual "losses", because the potential gain is hardly realistic there. We also don't want to lose their interest in music overall (even if they don't pay for it), because we'd lose them as potential customers. So there's no point in simply trying to shut that whole market down.
What I can imagine myself doing (speaking as a musician) is to either recognise myself as a big enough artist and people in China as a big enough market for me to tour that country and sell albums as part of the ticket price (like many artists, including Prince, did already). If I'm not big enough as an artist anyway the mentality about copyright in China can't be a major concern to me and the potential losses cannot be that big.
You can't change a whole society (even if I personally try to show my audience the real value of music etc).
It's an easy "solution", although Im well aware it only concern a very small part of a huge net of different problems, but from a musician's point of view this is what I can imagine myself doing. I'm a bit of a limited expert when it comes to this topic.

You are right she didn't.

Haha Well, to clear up any and all misunderstandings, my question to you personally is more along the lines of how you as a musician feel about the threats and opportunities of the internet and the nature and future of the western based music industry. I understand of course that your knowledge is limit on china and world trade issues and don't expect you to be an expert on anything really. Just very interested in your view as a musician on the way 'globalisation' hits you 'at home'.

Look at it like this: if she gets an 'A', she would probably come back and thank you for it

She better!
And pay me my royalties
No of course not, but credit would be nice and required of course, for a serious paper.
You know, when PURplEMaPLeSyrup's would really do this, that would sum this whole thread up in a nutshell...
