U2 is one of my most favorite bands, their music is amazing. But I can see why people think they are overrated. I also thought this first. But after I got into their music, I love them, and they became one of my favorite bands.

Overrated Britney Spears The Beatles Rihanna Diana Ross
Underrated New Edition Mariah Carey Parliament Funkadelic Cyndi Lauper El DeBarge
there's others but this is what first comes to mind. Also, I use the terms over/under-rated interchangeably with over/under-appreciated. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.

The Beatles and Diana Ross looked far from harmonious in the list with Britney and Rihanna ... Just saying.
Mariah Carey is underrated? Really?

Mimi. Yes. Underrated.
she has been relegated to a pop princess and she's far too talented for that. her powerful voice aside, she's a song writer and has chosen some great people to collaborate with which makes her somewhat of a smart business woman. I recognize that Tommy did her major props by making her the focus of his label back in the day but he also pigeon holed her. in a sense, she was like some black miley cyrus. Her best music, IMO, came after her divorce from that bootleg mobster.
Diana and the Beatles to me were heavily marketed to a certain audience and I think the press was paid for the extra favor shown to those groups. The Beatles were better as solo artists - that was some quality music. Diana...well...she's a hit or miss type of artist. She strikes me as someone who will try and fit into any niche she can. Yeah she's an icon but I think that's mostly because she's been around so damn long. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

LOL! Diana Ross! I thought I was the ONLY ONE ON EARTH who sees her as being overrated! She has one of the thinnest, weakest voices I've ever heard in my entire life and she's a legend? Same with Nancy Wilson...weak, thin, same ole, same ole kinda voice and those random yelp-breaths don't help her any EITHER. I fail to see the legendary status in her as well. No offense intended, y'all. Just my opinions. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Additionally, I think the New Edition SUCKS vocally. How these guys ever made it into the big league with their paper-thin, prepubescent voices is beYOND me. They STILL SOUND like a bunch of babies. Ralph would be excluded here. He's actually okay. Adding Johnny Gill to the mix seemed like an insult to HIMSELF (Gill), where his vocal power and prowess are beneath any other member of the band. Johnny could outsing any ONE of his bandmates in 1/4 of a note. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

And he's a songwriter too if I'm not mistaken. Musician (piano) as well. Those little extras count for A LOT! I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Yes, he IS! El's bangin' and he's blessed with a very pitch-perfect, sweet-sounding falsetto that literally wraps around any song he chooses to undertake. I reference specifically a Jam/Lewis composition "The Other Side" from his "Second Chance" CD. It's melancholia at its very best and the vocals prove this. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Now I love me some NE but if I were to put my music critic hat on and forget that Ralph makes me weak and that Ronnie has a special place in my heart , I have to agree with you that vocally, they did not mature as they should have. As a child group they worked but as they got older, its clear that their harmony had some help by non-members.
Thankfully, Johnny's "man" voice added class to the group. When you think about it, they are no longer NE but rather, Ralph the falsetto background singer, Bell Biv Devoe (dancers & rappers), and Johnny the soloist who would be front man if he were just a tad more attractive. Bobby, god bless his dysfucntional ass, cannot sing IMO. He tries but I've heard him live, before the drugs took his voice, and I wasn't impressed. Is he a great performer? Yep. And it is for that reason that he is not on my overrated list. [Edited 10/27/11 18:04pm] I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

What else do I need? Well, let's not even talk about why I think he deserves higher spot than #7 it's just my own opinion However...It says the list was determined by a poll of musicians and music experts; meaning those VH1 yahoos and musicians - sure, including Diddy - got to vote for their "favorite" artists. (And I see they still placed Prince under Led Zepplin on that list...when Robert Plant himself said that Prince is an absolute genius whom he can never be ) And they'd never rank MJ that high if he was still alive...How are we supposed to take this seriously? As if this list accurately reflects 100 greatest artists in order? Whether it's by VH1 or Rolling Stone - where they 'forgot' to put Prince on the 100 greatest guitarist list, - it's just impossible to say who's greater/better artist then whom objectively anyway. I'd much rather talk about how these musicians are recognized by the public, and even, their fans. When it's so evident that most of people my age don't even know who he is, and many of his albums are not even appreciated by his own fans, yes I'd say he's extremely underrated.

BEYONCE. I hated Destiny's Child. I hate her solo career even more. Boring voice, can't dance, damn sure can't act! Whoever said she does unnecessary runs and riffs was absolutely right. I don't know who told her that shit was tight. She's the queen alright, the queen of 'deluxe editions.'
Mary J. Blidge. Screams and tries (but fails miserably) to hit high notes. She has some great songs, don't get me wrong. But the last thing listenable she released was "No More Drama."
MJ - Enough said.
Britney Spears - Talentless white trash.
I could go on, but it's late and I'm tired.

That's just your own opinion. Among those singers you mentioned, none can outsing Stevie Wonder because all are different singers.
There are certain criteria of good singing. such as wide range, clear tone, good diction, diverse phrasing, pitch accuracy, breathing control...
And Stevie is great in all of those things. Besides he has most unique singing voice in music history. That's why many people and many fellow singers regard Stevie as one of greatest vocal of all time.
I remember you once said "Stevie is just about emotion"
But one thing you must not overlook is that carrying the emotion to song requires great skills and practices.

I want to put Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Stevie Wonder as they are the only black musicians that anyone ever seems to talk about as if no one else exists. I know that they are all wonderful, achieved big things and I love a lot of their music, but damn. =/
