Madonna hasn't been big in years. Yeah 4 Minutes was a hit but not the album itself. More Successful Tours? Michael has the most successful tours in music history, more hits? Next to Glee, Elvis has the largest amount of songs to get into the Hot 100. Also he was 18 Number One hits! The most of anybody on the U.S charts. I am a fan of Madonna but saying that she is more successful than MJ and Elvis is just ignorant.

Sticky & Sweet was the most successfull solo tour of all time, topping her previous. I think that counts as being pretty big in the past couple years.

Madonna is second to the Beatles in terms of chart success. Not counting Glee.

Automatically putting Madonna far behind MJ and Elvis is sexist.

It's not sexist. She's great just not as big. Sticky & Sweet isn't the most successful tour by a solo artist. It's the 2nd. And by big I mean studio wise. anybody with a world known name came have a big tour. Doesn't mean the albums sell

Ill post this AGAIN rolleyes

Confessions: 8 - 12 millions sold

The Sticky & Sweet Tour broke many records in terms of its ticket sales, commercial gross and audience attendance. After the first leg, it became the highest grossing tour by a solo artist, earning $282 million, breaking the previous record Madonna herself held with her Confessions Tour. Overall, Madonna performed to over 3.5 million fans in 32 countries, grossing a total of US$408 million, making it also the fourth highest grossing tour of all time, only behind U2's U2 360° Tour, AC/DC's Black Ice World Tour and The Rolling Stones's A Bigger Bang Tour. It still remains the highest grossing tour by a solo artist. At the 2009 Billboard Touring Awards, the Sticky & Sweet Tour won the Top Tour and Top Draw prizes, which acknowledge the highest-grossing and highest-attended tours of the year, respectively. Madonna's manager Guy Oseary won the Top Manager award.

Yes it was

Tours mean alot more success these days then album sales, even still 25+ years into her career she still got a top 5 single and a #1 album.

More successful tours??
More successful on what parameters? cool
Only fans of Madonna's compare the absolute figures. Properly take into account market conditions.

Highest Grossing Tours adjusted with inflation of Tickets Price
(in USD millions per show Adjusted with 2008 price)

1 Rolling Stones - Voodoo Lounge (1994-1995) 862
2 Pink Floyd - Division Bell (1994). 673
3 Rolling Stones - Bridges To Babylon (1997-1998) 615
4 Rolling Stones - Bigger Bang (2005-2007) 610
5 Rolling Stones - Steel Wheels (1989-1990) 572
6 Michael Jackson - Bad (1987-1989) 561
7 Rolling Stones - 1981-1982 Tour (1981-1982) 480
8 Rolling Stones - Licks (2002-2003) 429
9 Michael Jackson - History (1996-1997) 428
10 U2 - Vertigo (2005-2006) 425

Biggest Tours by Attendance

(in 000's)

1 Rolling Stones - Steel Wheels (1989-1990) 6500
2 Rolling Stones - Voodoo Lounge (1994-1995) 6400
3 Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion (1991-1993) 5800
4 Pink Floyd - Division Bell (1994.) 5500
5 U2 - ZooTV (1992-1993) 5400
6 Rolling Stones - 1981-1982 Tour (1981-1982) 4900
7 Rolling Stones - Bigger Bang (2005-2007) 4800
8 U2 - Vertigo (2005-2006) 4620
9 Rolling Stones - Bridges To Babylon (1997-1998) 4577
10 Michael Jackson - History (1996-1997) 4500

Your knowledge - is wrong.

Best selling music artists of all time (data for 2006)
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) just released their updated figures.
01. The Beatles 40 + 400,000,000 UK 60s (1962-1970) Rock / Pop Guinness
02. Michael Jackson 14 350,000,000 US 70s-00s (1979 -) Pop / R & B
03 Elvis Presley 150 + 300,000,000 US 50s-70s (1956-1977) Country / Rock
04. Madonna 16 275,000,000 US 80s-00s (1984 -) Pop

Madonna was named the Guinness World Record's most successful female artist ever. But the most successful artist in general was named Jackson.
To put her
behind the Beatles, Elvis and Michael does not sexism - it's just a statement of the facts!

The most successful solo act, obviously, Jackson OR Presley. But I can not decide who exactly. wink

Sorry, Timmy! heart

Madonna was still becoming "Madonna" when that thing was being assembled. My guess is that she wasn't invited. if she cared about being snubbed, then I'm sure she got a kick out of the fact that "Crazy For You" bumped "We Are the World" out of the #1 spot.

[Edited 10/22/11 23:45pm]

we are the world still out sold crazy for you 30x

When you have some of the biggest acts of the day on one song, I would expect it to. However, "Crazy For You" still gets healthy recurrent airplay and has gone on to become an AC staple...I can't recall the last time I heard "We Are the World" played anywhere. Probably not since before the 1990s.

What's amazing to me is,how many 'big' names either weren't invited or chose not to be a part of it...

Aretha Franklin - probably chose not to be a part of it

Luther Vandross - invited but probably was too busy to do it

Patti LaBelle - she's ALWAYS saying she was going to do something as eventful as this and probably said "but I was never invited" (then again was she at the American Music Awards at all?)

Donna Summer - Invited but probably had other options like her babies

Rick James - I couldn't see Rick wanting to be a part of it! lol

What's ironic about Donna not participating is....

Her 1982 song "State Of Independence" (produced by Quincy Jones) is actually where Quincy got the inspiration for 'We Are The World' lol For that song,he assembled an "all-star choir" and it worked out so well,he did the exact same thing for We Are The World.

Good! Where is your data, taking into account inflation?
Let's compare!
Recent tours have been to Jackson in 1997. Let's compare the fees Jackson's tours and Madonna`s tours in the 90s .... When they were two touring artist, Jackson has always collected more money. It's just a fact.
Average price of concert ticket in 2008: $ 67.33
Average price of concert ticket in 1997: $ 29.81
Compare absolute figures - laughable!! It is impossible to ignore market fluctuations and general conditions.
Jackson has the maximum number of viewers was 4.5 million people, Madonna - 3.5

Sorry, but you studied in school economics and marketing??
You brought absolute terms.
Illiterate compare fees for concert tours in the 00-ies and 90-ies, because ticket prices on average rose by 2.5 times, inflation was about 50%.

I know the absolute data, you're right there.
I brought the data for inflation and ticket prices. The data from the Economic Journal.
Competently compare data for a period of time. Because the
grossing tours Beatles in the 60s were great, now it's a penny.

The number of spectators at the concerts - more than a constant. And Michael is strongly superior in this aspect.

We're talking about different things, but both are correct.
Once you show only the numbers, I show the numbers that are calculated by economists considering market fluctuations that have occurred over 10 years. wink
