if you havent noticed in the past, gee, 30 years, M hasn't really seemed to enjoy performing with TALENTED, UNIQUE, ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT, KILLER VOICES, OR EXCEPTIONALLY YOUNGER FEMALE CONTEMPORARY STARS (bar Britney and Xxxtina's tongues in her mouth)

she doesn't perform with her peer superstars. unless MJ were still alive, that's the only one she would have (as a collaboration, not as part of a chorus)

it's just never been her thing to want to perform musically in the company of "musician's musicians" as they say...

Bedtime Stories and Hard Candy say otherwise...

Explains a lot about those albums lol Bedtime Storie does have some of her best songs and Miles Away is pretty good.

At that time she was only considered a could-have-been-waitress- lucky enough have a n. 1 record. No big singer, no real musician, no big industry name in her signature. They didn't invite her intentionally. At that time there WAS a selection (and rightly so).

Yeah I got similar stories. It seems offstage he has a totally different attitude then when he's in front of cameras.

Donna was the first artist signed to Geffen Records and I think she made a mistake. The label was brand new, just starting out and they didn't have alot of experience/success with someone like Donna. Most of the other acts were pop and rock.In 1980,she was the hottest female artist in the business. She could have went with Motown,Arista,Warner Bros....any other label.I still wonder why she chose Geffen.

She was being told she was being ripped off by her record company, and everyone in the music biz knew David Geffen. Casablanca was kind of waning by then anyway. It's like asking why John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Peter Gabriel decided to sign (Neil had a well publicized falling out with Geffen)

but Geffen had no real experience with black artists who recorded dance music.Look at what happened when Donna submitted I Am Rainbow....David didn't even know what to do with it.If Donna had signed with a label like Warners or Epic,I bet that her career would have thrived in the 80s.

I was about to say that. I mean he can sing as shown in The Blues Brothers, but no way was he specifically selected.

I always thought it was just all the artists that were at the 1985 American Music Awards as they gathered together directly afterward to start recording - bar Prince of course. Was Madonna even at that award show? Hell, maybe she was on The Virgin Tour at the time.

It's like saying why wasn't MJ at Live Aid? He was filminig Captain EO and had a sprained wrist, but lots of people don't know that.

Read reply 71 by me. You'll get a lot of your questions answered.

A lot of this has to do with timelines. WATW was recorded in January. Madonna's album had just dropped a couple of months before. I'm not sure if Madonna was at the show that night before. I don't remember seeing her there.

A lot of you forget that this was 1984 and 1985. Singles actually had staying power back then. There was none of this releasing a single every 2 weeks. Usually the first single from an album would drop about 6 weeks prior to the album being released. That way radio could build up a momentum. Sometimes, the radio stations would get the songs 8 or 10 weeks in advance, then the single would drop at the music store a week or so later.

In early 1985, Madonna was not a superstar. She had 2 or 3 pretty big songs under her belt and one hit album. She had just released her 2nd album in November and LAV (the single) was getting crazy spins. If I recall correctly, Material Girl struggled at radio until the video debuted on MTV. After that, it became a huge hit.

WATW was full of the people that Q, MJ, Lionel, and Ken Kragen felt would make it a hit. They invited the "veteran" hitmakers at the time. If you notice, most of the people in that room had been recording for at least 5 or so years. Dan Akyroid was a HUGE star at the time having just come off of a few really big movies and the Blues Brothers.

If I remember correctly a lot of people turned down the invitation to perform (besides Prince). I don't know if it was contractual or they didn't know what to expect of the session. The documentary that Jane Fonda narrated kinda hinted at this. If you guys haven't seen it, you should rent or buy the DVD. It's a good documentary.

Who cares, its not like the song needed her voice anyway. Besides, imo she hadn't "earned" the entrance to the party at that time.
