What's ironic about Donna not participating is....

Her 1982 song "State Of Independence" (produced by Quincy Jones) is actually where Quincy got the inspiration for 'We Are The World' lol For that song,he assembled an "all-star choir" and it worked out so well,he did the exact same thing for We Are The World.

falloff hilarious factoid thanks for that biggrin

Lionel Richie and his OUTRAGEOUS! exclamations. lol

I'm surprised that didn't become an '80s catch phrase because I definitely think it is. lol

Well, to get back on topic, I can't see Patti, Donna or Rick on We are the World. Patti, because that damn screaming of hers would have blown out the studio mikes. She doesn't know how to rein it in. Donna, because she was no longer hot at that time and no one wanted a damn thing to do with disco. Rick, because he was a bit too hardcore.

Even thought I think the original We Are The World line up was a bit hit and miss, it might as well have been the perfect group compared to this ish:

I had no idea she wasn't invited, but she was a huge star then, right?

Not really. "Like A Virgin" had just been released in November of 84 and "We Are the World" was recorded in January (or February) in 1985. She may not have even been on her 2nd single yet (which was "Material Girl."

When the "Like A Virgin" album took off, that's when Madonna became a HUGE STAR.

Didn't We are The World have Latoya in it?

She didn't get a solo. lol Madonna wouldn't have either. There are several people in that choir that had questionable voices...Jackie Jackson, Randy Jackson, John Oates, the other band member of Huey Lewis and the News, Little Steven, Dan Akyroid and others.

Madonna was still becoming "Madonna" when that thing was being assembled. My guess is that she wasn't invited. if she cared about being snubbed, then I'm sure she got a kick out of the fact that "Crazy For You" bumped "We Are the World" out of the #1 spot.

there's the answer smile

What's amazing to me is,how many 'big' names either weren't invited or chose not to be a part of it...

Aretha Franklin

Luther Vandross

Patti LaBelle

Donna Summer

Rick James

I would think that Aretha would have been invited since she and Quincy were pretty tight, however, she didn't fly at the time and I'm sure it would have taken her 3 days to get to LA from Detroit.

Patti was not really that big at the time. She was trying to restart her career at the time.

I really wonder about Donna. She should have been there. Especially coming off of the success of "She Works Hard For The Money."

Rick was probably too high and Quincy didn't want to be bothered with him. After all, the theme for the night was to "check your egos at the door," and Rick couldn't do that.

The bolded ones are the only ones I know about and like/dont hate. Why did they put rap in WATW? I got nothing against rap but it just didnt belong there and letting Wayne try to sing was just awful.

You do not know or do not like / hate Gladys Knight, Barbra Streisand, Tony Braxton??? eek
In my opinion, they are wonderful singers.

I love and respect humanitarian projects.
But why it was necessary to use this song? Why are they not written a new song for a new social project? neutral

This is why Quincy Jones needs to retire disbelief He comes up with the most ridiculous ideas these days.Does the world really need a remake of 'We Are The World'? With rappers on it?!

I agree! His last album was utter garbage. There was only one song that I liked. I don't understand why he thinks he should keep remaking his own song?

This is the perfect song for this format.
Social songs should be simple, repeatable and easy to grasp for a person of any race, nationality, language and place of residence.
The song perfectly fulfilled its function, has collected a large sum of money to help needy people.
It is an important moment in the history of charitable movements.

People forget to mention Bette Midler being there she was deserving of a solo part than Kim Carnes. To me it was nothing more than a popularity contest. If your career was hot you got a solo if not you were part of the choir.

Does anyone know if Barbara Streisand was invited?
