DMX-one of the greatest rappers ever?

I think a serious case can be made. I mean his charisma is off the chain. And unlike a lot of these wannabees out here, DMX was as raw as you could get

I think it's pretty obvious that DMX is one of the greatest emcee's ever. I just wish he'd stay off crack & stop going to prison every other day. I miss his energy & rawness...

I don't think so. I think to be one of the greatest rappers ever, you have to have longevity. You have to put out good material on a consistent basis. It also helps not to make yourself a punchline.

Yeah old boy has a longer prison record than Ol Dirty and Bobby Brown. I don't think you have to have longevity to be great. I mean, look at Buddy Holly or Sam Cooke, you know?

I'm talking about the artists who were fortunate enough not to die prematurely.

Is Slick Rick not one of the best ever? His reign was short lived too. Drugs & jail can ruin a lot of people. DMX has at least one Classic Album [It's Dark, & Hell Is Hot] under his belt....

I think Rick's material is a lot more influential than X's. You can play The Show, Children's Story, etc at a party today and people go nuts no matter what their age is.

DMX doesn't have that impact, IMO. Grandma ain't dancin' to Damien or the Ruff Ryder's Anthem!

DMX was part of the reason real hip-hop came back for a minute. You don't remember when Puffy was doing all of that shiny suit, pop rap & DMX came through and switched things up? How can DMX not had an impact, but released two #1 albums in the same year? How many other rappers have done that?

Yeah I definitely think he's one of the greats. Ain't scared to say dude's in legend status already. C'mon, man, how many rappers have their first five albums go to number-one and do platinum, multi-platinum? Plus he's sick lyrically and also with his flows. He brought hip-hop back to a grimier (sp?), more grittier state than the pussy ass shit Puffy and 'em were putting out at the time. For that, yeah he definitely is one of the greatest in my book.

And he's the only one who did it while alive. Pac did it but posthumously.

Five straight number 1 records, that longevity inthe rap game.

His time at the top is about the same amount as older cats like BDK, Kool Moe D, Eric B ect. I think his longevity is fine.

^ Plus when you think about it, his career IS long. About 20 years. He first got people's attention as an "Unsigned Hype" artist on VIBE back in 1991. People didn't wanna promote him initially because he was "too hard". Took until 1997 for him to finally get out there and be respected. And hip-hop was in search of a new "top emcee" after Pac and BIG died. X (and Jay-Z) were the perfect ones to fill their shoes. Not everyone has a career like LL Cool J lol

He reallt helped put East Coast back on the map as the West and South adneven the Midwest were gettin more love than East coast at that time besides Wu-Tang Clan and new to the scene at the time Jay Z.

Damn, I'm outnumbered like a motherfucker in here!

I don't know, when I read DMX- one of the greatest rappers ever. It just doesn't click with me the way it does a 2Pac, or a Big Daddy Kane, or a Rakim.

nod For real! This era occurred when I was in high school. X's first 3 albums were played royally in my car during that time. nod These were the glory days.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yup.

DMX has always been in my Top 5.

That 1-2 double punch of "It's Dark & Hell Is Hot" and "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood" was the sickest injection of grittiness since "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle" or "Straight Outta Compton" and "Eazy-Duz-It", or "The Infamous" and "Hell On Earth".....

Those are his two classics, but I really liked "The Great Depression" as well, it fell a bit short of the first two albums but it was better than "...And Then There Was X" IMO.

I'm glad he's out of jail and getting back on track - he did a new freestyle the other day over a new Swizz Beatz track and straight tore it up!

Anyone else here ever read "E.A.R.L"? It's DMX's autobiography, he didn't write it himself per se but he sat with the author Smokey D Fontaine and relayed his entire life story to him. It's a great read.

We need X back in the game and judging by the royal welcome he got at the Hip Hop Awards, the public knows it as well.

Exactly. It seems people like to namedrop those three easily. But hip-hop has a lot more legends than some would give them credit for. Go back to Kurtis Blow and 'em. Hip-hop has a sea of LEGENDS even if half of the genre's fans act disrespectfully towards some of them (like in the case of LL).

And "grandma" may have not played to "Ruff Ryders Anthem" but she sure was dancing innocently enough to the censored version of "Party Up in Here". razz
