What was the Dreamgirls fiasco?

The original movie was set in the 50s, this will be brought forward to around 1968, civil rights era.

The movie.

Ugh I watched it with my parents around four years ago, Eddie Murphy was the saving grace of that film, I'll just say that. I think J-Hud was overrated, Beyonce surely needed more studying as an actor (she was acting too much like herself), Anika was good though. Jamie... rolleyes

I LOVED dreamgirls! Beyonce was her typical non-singing/non-acting self. I agree about Jennifer, and Anika was the best in that movie. Too bad she went unnoticed. I love her voice. Has she released any recorded material? "Patience" is my ish. Still gets played to this day.

Cee-Lo Tapped To Star In 'Sparkle' Remake; R. Kelly Producing Soundtrack

Grammy winner Cee-Lo Green is joining Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks in the remake of the 1976 film Sparkle.

According to Variety, the Fuse TV host will be one of the stars in the music-themed drama that features actors Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Omari Hardwick.

Jordin portrays Sparkle, a singer struggling to make it while Whitney plays her mother and Green is an opening act.

R. Kelly is slated to work on the movie's soundtrack and Derek Luke and Mike Epps are also acting in Sparkle.

As previously reported, Cee-lo will also be playing Raekwon's father in an upcoming film and is in the lab with his Goodie M.O.b cohorts working on their reunion album.

Cee-lo stays busy,

I'm really excited about the casting of Cee-lo. I'm a fan of his and as a lead to. This movie should be interesting....I like the rest of the casting to.

What is the harm in remaking it? it's puting actors to work! It's not like the original movie was great production wise. It sucked! The lighting was dark and dreary. There is much that could be improved in a remake. The stand out was the music and the unexpected trajedy of Sister. Everything else about it was meh!

I think it's a chance to retell a cult classic that gives lessons for the moder era. I'm not opposed to this and it baffles me when i hear people say don't remake it. If it's done badly it will bomb, if it is done well, it won't but at least an attempt to put out a decent movie and put actors to work is going on.

I'd rather see this than another Madea spoof!

Aren't all movies (& TV shows) remakes or clones? lol There's only so many plots that can be done. Just like all music is a copy of something else.

Original? There's hardly any of that. There are no "original" ideas. Everything is based on. . .

Mike Epps? I'm not a fan. And I hope that it is based loosely on the original movie. Some things don't need to be touched. This movie is a classic for me the same way that Imitation of Life is.

It was said that Curtis did not want to work with the actresses at all and wanted them to lip sync Aretha's vocals.

I'm glad Curtis didn't win that fight. Not that I don't like Aretha's vocals, love her version, but those girls could sing, so why not let them?

But he cannot pull of the fineness that was Philip Michael Thomas in this movie!! I was in LOVE with PMT in this and Miami Vice. I think Derek Luke is miscast from an aesthetic standpoint. PMT was so hot as Stix that I wanted Sparkle to be "bad" with him so I could live vicariously through her. lol This is as bad as casting Jamie Foxx to play PMT's Tubbs in the movie remake of Miami Vice.

I won't be seeing the remake, though. I don't care who is in it. These remakes and proposed remakes are killing me. I just saw the cast for the propose remake of one of my favorite films, The Warriors, and all I could do is SMH!

FIRST PIC: Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, & Carmen Ejogo Ready Their "Sparkle" Characters

The Sparkle girls are ready for their close-ups! The new Sparkle remake is already in rehearsals, and co-stars Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, and Jordin Sparks had their first meet-up recently.

Deets and pics inside...

Both Jordin and Tika tweeted pics of the ladies from their rehearsal day in L.A. for the upcoming ‘Sparkle’ remake by Salim and Mara Brock Akil.

Carmen, who's been married to James Bond actor Jeffrey Wright for 11 years, will play the role of "Sister." Tika is set to play "Delores." And Jordin is the lead playing "Sparkle."

Whitney Houston will likely play the mother and Derek Luke will play the role of "Stixx." Omari Hardwick will play "Levi" and Cee-Lo has been added as an opening act role. And R. Kelly signed on for the soundtrack

The big-screen remake of the 1976 film Sparkle just got a bit, er, more sparkly. EW has confirmed that Cee Lo Green, the Grammy-winning multi-platinum R&B singer and mentor on NBC’s The Voice, has joined the cast, which includes American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in the title role of an aspiring music star, and Whitney Houston as her mother.

Carmen Ejogo (Away We Go) and Tika Sumpter (The CW’s Gossip Girl) have also signed up to play Sparks’ sisters, Sister and Dolores; together, the trio rise together in the Motown-era music business as a Supremes-like group. Green will play their opening act, while another new addition, Omari Hardwick (TNT’s Dark Blue), will play one of the love interests for Ejogo’s character. Derek Luke and Mike Epps round out the cast. Director Salim Akil (Jumping the Broom) will helm the film from a script penned by his wife Mara Brock Akil (The CW’s Girlfriends).

Meanwhile, R&B superstar R. Kelly has agreed to write original music for the Sparkle soundtrack.

The film is set to begin shooting next month.

All the press has gotten a hold of this project...

Whitney never disappoints when she sings gospel. Mervyn Warren who co-produced with her, 'the preachers wife' sndtrak and her xmas cd, 'One wish' just signed on to produce her gospel song (s).

My atennae just went up because I know whitney has said gospel is close to her heart and she has always wanted to do another gospel cd but clive won't let her.

Mervyn Warren, the man who has produced most of Whitney's gospel songs on TPW and Christmas album will work again on a song with Whitney for Sparkle! It's posted on the 27th september so it's safe to say that the song hasn't been recorded yet and will take a little time for Mervyn Warren to prepare... I guess he will take care of the gospel song(s) and R.Kelly will probably work on the r&b tracks...

Whatever happened to the Waiting to Exhale sequel? I'd much rather see that.

Neither of these projects sound promising to me.It's as if Hollywood has truly run out of ideas.

Mark my word, both of these movies that Whitney will be starring in and producing will do well at the box office. She hasn't had a flop yet.

She brought in Mervyn Warren to produce her gospel song. I'm super amped now. He is a former member of the group Take 6 and co-produced her Preacher's Wife Sndtrack and her Christmas cd, 'One Wish'.

he's also working on the 'joyful noise' movie starring queen latifah, keke palmer and dolly parton about a gospel church choir.

Add R kelly and I feel good that the music won't be trash.

Debra Martin Chase On Producing Musicals And Remakes

Sep 28, 2011 |

Debra Martin Chase On Producing Musicals And Remakes
By Wilson Morales

September 28, 2011

With the lack of black films in theaters these days, it’s pretty evident that many completed films are having a tough time getting off the ground or getting distributed by big studios. While directors and actors come in and do their work, it’s much harder for a producer to get funding, secure distribution rights, and then promote the film.

One producer consistently on a good roll and continues to be blessed with work is Debra Martin Chase, who’s ready to start production of two films. One is the ABC Family film, ‘Elixir,’ which is the channel’s first musical and reunites her with ‘Just Wright’ director Sanaa Hamri. Chase produced that romantic comedy that starred Queen Latifah and Common. The other project is the remake of the 1976 film ‘Sparkle,’ with screenwriter Mara Brock Akil and her husband, director Salim Akil (‘Jumping The Broom’) on board.

The cast of ‘Sparkle’ was recently announced with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks set for the lead role. Also featured in the musical are Carmen Egojo, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwicke, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Cee-Lo Green, and Grammy winning artist/ actress Whitney Houston returning the screen as the mother.

For the Chicago native Chase, venturing into musicals isn’t new to her, having produced hits with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Cheetah Girls 2′ on the Disney channel, and some Hollywood blockbusters including ‘The Princess Diaries,’ and ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.’

In speaking with Blackfilm.com, Chase talks about her current projects, working with Whitney Houston again, casting Sparks in ‘Sparkle,’ and the remake of ‘Dirty Dancing

What’s the attraction to producing ‘Elixir?’

Debra Martin Chase: It’s great script. It’s a great story. It’s an original. It’s like ‘Mamma Mia’ meets ‘Freaky Friday.’ It was written by Terry Rossio, who writes the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, and a new writer Jaylynn Bailey. We just loved it.

What is it an easy sell for ABC Family to do their first musical?

DMC: They actually brought me on to it. They bought the script in a non-musical version and decided to turn it into a musical. They came to me and asked if I wanted to produce it. They have been wanting to get into the musical business for a while and thought this was the right time.

You will also be working with (director) Sanaa Hamri again after ‘Just Right.’

DMC: Yes, this is her first time bringing all her tools in her bag to the table. She’s going to knock this musical out of the park. I’m so thrilled that she wanted to do this and was able to do it. She’s so hugely talented and has great movies under here belt and has been doing high end television work with John Wells and is a great video director. She’s worked with Prince, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. She did the ‘Super Bass’ video with Nicki that won Best Hip Hop Video Award at the MTV Awards and has over 100 million views on Youtube. I think it broke the record. She’s wonderfully creative and we’re friends and we have the same vision. I think she’s fantastic.

Outside of Tom Wopat, who’s done some singing on Broadway, does the the rest of the cast have musical background?

DMC: When you’re doing an ensemble musical, people are stronger in some areas than others. Chelsea Kane can sing and is an amazing dancer. Jane Seymour is an amazing and she can sing. Drew Seeley can do it, and so can Adrienne Bailon. That’s the hard thing about casting a musical. People need to sing, dance, and act. There are a few that can do all three and with others, you have to balance it out and get something fabulous.

Although it’s been years since you produced ‘Cinderella,’ the ABC musical that starred Brandy and Whitney Houston, will you come into this film with that same approach?

DMC: Yes and no. Yes in a sense with the elements of a musical. ‘Sparkle’ and ‘Elixir’ are my fifth and sixth musical and along the way, I’ve learned more about the genre. So, hopefully I’m bringing more to the table with each time out.

Your other project is the remake of ‘Sparkle,’ in which Whitney Houston will be back on the screen acting again. Was it easy to convince her to come back to the acting world?

DMC: I was Whitney’s producing partner for five years. We had a company together called Brownhouse Productions. I’ve had ‘Sparkle’ for 11 years. Whitney and I were developing it under Brownhouse at Warner Bros. for Aaliyah. We had the green light when Aaliyah tragically died. Then it went on the shelf and I kept going back to Warner Bros. every year to see if I could get rolling. They were doing it and while we were having dinner one night, Michael Lynton, who’s Chairman and CEO over at Sony Pictures, and a good friend of mine, mentioned that he loved the movie. Years later, here we are and ready to start production. Whitney will be getting executive producer credit on this because of the history she’s had with the project. We have a longstanding relationship.

Did Whitney want to be in the film as an actress as well?

DMC: She’s always the love project and wanted to be a part of it. We spoke about the role nearly a year ago. This is the right film for her to come back. Mara wrote a fantastic script. I’m involved and with our history, it just made sense.

Can you talk about casting Jordin Sparks in the lead role? This will be her film debut.

DMC: I think she’s perfect for the role. She’s Sparkle in terms of her spirit. She has amazing abilities and great instinct. She’s led an interesting life and that comes through in her acting. She was one of the first ideas we had and when Salim (Akil) met with her one-on-one first, he came back and was like, ‘This is Sparkle!’ She and Derek Luke, who will play Stix, should have great chemistry. The clothes will be provided by costume designer Ruth Carter, who’s a two-time Oscar nominee (‘Malcolm X’ and ‘Amistad’), and it will be fabulous. We want to pay homage to the period (1968 Detroit) but still be very accessible today. So, we’re really excited.

These two projects should be more than enough to fill your plate, but you are also producing the remake of ‘Dirty Dancing.’ What’s the status with that project and why are musicals ever so popular now?

DMC: We will be shooting that next summer. Kenny Ortega is directing and choreographing the film and Maria Maggenti is writing the screenplay. With ‘Footloose’ coming out in October, and although ‘A Star is Born’ with Beyond has been delayed for now, the American audience have rediscovered the musicals. With the phenomenal success of ‘Glee,’ ‘High School Musica,l’ ‘Chicago’ and ‘Hairspray,’ it’s pretty clear that people loved them and want more. Just in general, Hollywood is looking to break titles and beloved stories and seeing if there’s a way to freshen them and appeal to the people who loved them and also have something fresh for the people who are discovering them for the first time and ‘Dirty Dancing’ falls in that cate

This article kind of gives a little bit of the plot by posting the description submited by the casting director when looking for the actress to play the Sparkle character...

‘Sparkle’: Jordin’s Casting Notice

Posted on 30 September 2011 Casting News

When searching for the new lead in the forthcoming ‘Sparkle’ remake, casting director Twinkie Byrd described the Sparkle Anderson character in great detail. Ultimately, the part ended up in the hands of singer Jordin Sparks.

SPARKLE ANDERSON
19, African-American, beautiful and talented, but humbler and more modest than her provocative older sister Tammy (who goes by “Sister”), Sparkle is a deeply skilled singer/songwriter who works at her strict mother’s dress shop and isn’t allowed to pursue her passion of making music. Unaccustomed to the spotlight, but secretly longing to claim it for herself, Sparkle secretly convinces Sister and Dolores (her half-sister) to form a musical group with her. Sparkle’s new boyfriend and manager, Stix, urges Sparkle to go after her dreams and get out of Sister’s shadow, while at the same time promoting Sister as the group’s leader singer/main attraction. But Sparkle’s real hurdle is breaking free of her mother, Effie, who was once a singer herself but believes no good can come of that lifestyle…LEAD (1) Actress must be able to sing. Piano is optional but a plus.

What does this tell us? Jordin will be playing the piano (or pretending to). Tika will be playing Jordin and Carmen’s “half” sister. Jordin and Whitney will not get along. The casting director/filmmakers took hundreds of self-taped auditions into consideration before choosing Sparks.

Yes she was the best and a very nice lady in person. Her crush on Eddie's character(who should have won an oscar) was totally believable in that movie.

Anika ended up becoming Disney's first black animated Princess & a doll in her image was made. That is better than being unnoticed in "Dreamgirls". Her hard work ended up paying off paid off.
