i hope the screen writers modify the script to fit a 37yr old Derek Luke to play the role of stix. in the original movie (1975) the character "stix" is first shown as a singer in the local church's teenagers' choir. in the (original) 1975 release stix is played by a 24yr old Philip Michael Thomas.

Irene Cara and Philip Michael Thomas in "Sparkle"

imo, there is going have to be some serious re-writing to make this movie worth going to see.

Derek can still pull off 24 he doesn't look 37 at all. Plus he is an actor.

I'm sure that's what everyone said about Diana Ross playing Dorothy in The Wiz. And they even changed Dot to a high school teacher yet we still don't hear the end of how horrible she was playing a teen. shrug

Derek is so underrated it's not even funny. It's ashame his filmography isn't as great as it should be at this point.

That is no comparison & U know it. Berry I'm sure is still regreting that decision. "The Wiz" to me was still a good movie. Just prejudice Hollywood didn't want to see that version make it so they sabotaged it.

Back to Derek he played an excellent portrayal of younger Diddy in Biggie Smalls movie. He can do it. But i'm sure his part will be rewritten to suit his age now.

But he cannot pull of the fineness that was Philip Michael Thomas in this movie!! I was in LOVE with PMT in this and Miami Vice. I think Derek Luke is miscast from an aesthetic standpoint. PMT was so hot as Stix that I wanted Sparkle to be "bad" with him so I could live vicariously through her. lol This is as bad as casting Jamie Foxx to play PMT's Tubbs in the movie remake of Miami Vice.

I won't be seeing the remake, though. I don't care who is in it. These remakes and proposed remakes are killing me. I just saw the cast for the propose remake of one of my favorite films, The Warriors, and all I could do is SMH!

So who would be your choice for them to cast as Stix? Also your choice to cast in the movie version of "Miami Vice" as Tubbs instead of Jamie?

This reminds me of when Derek Luke was cast as Patrick Chamusso in Catch a fire. Patrick said when he saw Derek Luke he felt he was too ugly & unattractive to play him biggrin . He said he would have preferred to have Will Smith play him...I thouight that was funny & mean.

Maybe that is why the beautiful Jada Pinkett Smith cast Luke in her now cancelled drama "Hawthorne".... giggle

Tristan WildsTristan Wilds
Who He Plays: Dixon, the sweet and athletic Brandon Walsh-type on The CW's revamp of '90210.'
Why You Should Know Him: for his well acted role in 'The Secret Life of Bees'

The 20-year-old can play Beverly Hills smooth talker or Baltimore street dealer. Those unfamiliar with HBO's critically adored 'The Wire'should check out seasons 4 and 5 for one of the finest television performances by a teenager ever. He's also slated to play a member of the Tuskegee Airmen in the George Lucas-produced 'Red Tails,' an historical drama due out later this yet.
imo he'd be great as Stix.

Actually, I do not have a person in mind for either. My brother thought Terrence Howard would have been a better pick than Jamie in Miami Vice. However, I never found TH attractive. I just think that PMT had a uniquely attractive look and charm to him. He reminded me of Calvin Lockhart (another of my '70's/'80's dreamboats) in that way.

I would really prefer it if the lazy folks in movieland would consider searching for some new talent to play the role. I know there are only a handful of of black actors in rotation so they get miscast often (IMO), but it is what it is. The dearth of black actors getting work in mainstream Hollywood is legendary. However, it would be nice to see some new blood.

As for Patrick Chamusso, I don't think he is attractive nor do I necessarily think that Derek Luke is ugly or unattractive. I just don't think he is in the category of Philip Michael Thomas. I have yet to see him display that mix of natural sexiness and charm. Part of the appeal of the relationship between Spark and Stix was what a stunning young couple they were. Truth to tell, I am not all that crazy about Jordin Sparks being Sparkle, and I have no idea who they will cast as Sister or Satin. Tony King, who originally played Satin, had the sexy bad guy thing down pat in the '70s. He was that dude you wanted though you knew he was no good for you. I don't know who out there has that today. That's probaby why I wish they would leave the original alone and just do a new movie about a girl group's struggles without trying to capitalize off the name of the original.

spit Honey, I could care less. The music scene is so dead these days that even she seems funky in comparison to it. As far as any shitting goes, she's not changing a thing because her damage was done years ago in the late 1980s. All she can do now is shit on top of the pile she started and make it bigger. That's nothing new, it's just business as usual these days. I'll give her this much credit though, she's much better than the rough trade shit hop gutter trash of the last 20 years.

CeeLo, Derek Luke Join “Sparkle,” Whitney Houston to Sing Gospel Songs

whitney-houston

Exclusive: The remake of “Sparkle” is on the road to starting next month. Whitney Houston, already announced, will play Jordin Sparks‘s mother. In this version, Whitney’s character will not be a maid but a former R&B star who’s gone back to the church. I am told that Whitney will sing two gospel songs in the film.

The rest of the soundtrack is divided between the original Curtis Mayfield songs and four new songs from R. Kelly. Added to the cast: pop star Cee Lo Green, and actor Derek Luke. Debra Martin Chase and Howard Rosenman are producing, Salim Akil is directing from a script by his wife,Mara Brock Akil. “Sparkle” will be released by TriStar/Sony in 2012 or 2013 at the latest, not 2014 as stated in the imdb.

And what about Whitney? My source say she’s in great shape, and never looked better.

Im told in the remake the sisters, stix, levi are a few years older. Derek Luke doesn't look over 30 to me, he can pull it off.

Now, having Carme Ejogo play Whitney's daughter may be a stretch as whitney is not gonna look frumpy. She's not a maid, she's a r& b former singer. I have to admit, i'm getting a bit excited for this movie and r kelly on bbs, the music should be good.

Capone comes face to face with the great actor Michael K. Williams to talk THE WIRE (Omar), BOARDWALK EMPIRE (Chalky White), COMMUNITY (Prof. Kane) and his role in Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED!!!

Published at: Sep 25, 2011 3:33:43 PM CDT

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.

Capone: You’ve got a very full plate with T.V. right now, but do you have any films coming out like in the next year or so?

MKW: Well I don’t know in the next year, but my film plate is getting a little full. I recently booked a role in an upcoming film called SNITCH with The Rock and Susan Sarandon. I am in huge discussions again with QT, as I call him. [Laughs] You might know him better as Quentin Tarantino. We were talking about another role for DJANGO UNCHAINED, and I’m getting a lot of heat from this remake of an old film called SPARKLE.

Capone: Oh? I’ve heard about this remake actually. With Whitney Houston.

MKW: I’m getting a lot of heat from that. So my movie plate is starting to fill up.

R Kelly is lethal with his pen. You must not have heard his last cd, very old school and not one bad song from 'Love Letter' to 'Radio Message' go youtube his latest songs.

R kelly has written several hits for movies from I beleive I can fly to others. He also wrote 2 of the best songs for Nippy on'I Look to You'

I Look to You

Salute

I'm confident he can bring it.

U know I knew this movie would happen quickly. But not this quickly. Whitney is serious about getting this finished. I guess she wants to be ready for the sequel to "Waiting to Exhale". I'm proud of her. She is back and all about business not going anywhere. I like that they have added Cee-lo, hope he sings in it. Like his voice.

R Kelly is a good choice to write for the soundtrack very gifted prolific writer. Don't understand the criticism about him. Its shaping up well.

I noticed you were an avid Whitney hater in that thread we had a while back about her. May I ask why you dislike her? Do you dislike her because she was a black and did pop? And if you hate Whitney, you must want Mariah Carey and Celine dead then, since they followd in Whitney's footsteps? lol.
