are you gonna get it?You're making perfect sense here regarding your remark about The Columbia Masters being a Sony marketing project, because a same sort of box set is released with music from the Electric Light Orchestra and a box set from Dexter Gordon, both coming at around that same price.
For that price at which the EWF box set is coming, they might as well throw in a set of Gratitude headphones, right?
Anyway, after my first excitement I'm thinking about what real new stuff this box has to offer. The last and most interesting disk (Constellations: The Universe of EWF) contains these so-called "scintillating live versions" of Getaway and In The Stone: is this just a part of the Live In Rio-cd we already have or are these really new live versions?
There's two instrumental versions of Let's Groove and Boogie Wonderland: is this stuff we already have?
Than there's the productional stuff from MW, with music from Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond: we already have that.
There are two unreleased tracks from the TTW-sessions which is very cool, but I don't think I'm going to lay down such an amount of money for just two tracks. A suggestion would be to release this last disk as a separate cd as well.
Of course the box set contains all Columbia albums which are packed in these great cardboard sleeves, but what do these disks really have to offer?
I'm thinking about the last remastered cd's that were released which all had 2 or 3 bonus tracks. But we are still waiting for the release of a remastered version of Powerlight, Electric Universe (which will never happen as a separate cd), TTW and Heritage: if these disks all contain 2 or 3 extra tracks, than we're talkin' about 8 to 10 new tracks here. In combination with the last disc it might be very interesting. But I guess it's wise to wait for a definite tracklisting for this box set.
So this box set can be a real great addittion to our collection or it can be a very expensive way to obtain just a handful new tracks.

pretty expensive though if you own most of it on several versions already...
without wanting to spoil the party... so for those who are not obsessed with remasters and just need to fill a few holes here and there, here's some cheaper alternatives

This remastered set contains the first two Heatwave albums and the sound quality is AMAZING.Play the original CDs (pressed in the 80s) and then play these remasters.....you will hear a difference.When a remaster is done right,you will hear things that you didn't even notice before. | |

Do you think most artists in the vein of EWF, who have or will soon be releasing box sets, or remastered recordings purposely leave out many tracks that remain in the vault, so they can have those recordings to parcel out every now and again in the future?
I bought the remastered TTWOTW, Spirit, AllnALL and cannot believe that Maurice only recorded basically a few more tracks than were released on the original CD....those that were included on those remastered CDs......
there has to be more.....and not just different takes on already released songs.....an Album like FACES, which Maurice claimed they just had so much music in them at the time that they put out a double album.....they HAVE to have many more tunes from those session that are collecting dust somewhere..... | |

I'm not into Heatwave enough to buy their albums. A hits compilation is good enough for me. The Genesis box sets from about 3 years ago does have better sound. But they were also remixed in addition to the remastering. So was The Beatles 1999 version of Yellow Submarine. I was hoping the 2009 remasters were mixed in the same way, but they weren't. They do sound better than the 1987 CDs though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |

Nice to see some fans get the stuff Maurice did for Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond in the 80's. He did some good work on both albums, and even more impressive, his productions did not sound like EWF leftovers, with the exception of Neil Diamond's "Stand up for love" (co-produced by Greg Phillingaines). it's more like Maurice's solo album really then EWF, but the influence is there. It's a decent track thats made average by the quick fade out. It's way too short
Much better is Streisands "time machine". Co-written by White like "Stand up for love", but this time its tailor made for Barbra lyrically. You can clearly hear Maurice on backing vocals aswell LOL. It's blessed by some nice bass by Abraham Laboriel aswell. Maurice working with top session men aswell as brit songwriter Martin Page, who he worked with quite alot in the 80's.
The productions he did for both artists prove how diverse he could be. He also helped produce this fun AOR tune for Glenn Burknick, again proving he could do more outside of EWF.
