I think I get that she is trying to say (by comparing Jesus and Jackson Pollack) that those who are outcast or scorned by society are the ones she admires and wants to be associated with--and that society ends up understanding the truth about them much later.

But I don't think songs like this age very well, lyrically speaking. Musically it's okay, not amazing.

I like the punk movement of the '70s though.

I think Punk was probably the most honest movement in Rock.

It wasn't pretending to be anything more than it was.

A bunch of blokes who could barely tune and play their guitars, expressing their angst to the world.

Nothing wrong with that.

I think the sex pistols ruined that. (which is why I was never partial to them)

This song in particular, I've always had a soft spot for, because it took balls to do.

And you could see that punk slowly started to die after they came. The message was lost

And a transitional stage was sought.

This was achieved by Joy Division... Who interestingly enough where inspired by Sex Pistols energy yet harnessed it in a much more artistic fashion.

In my opinion without Joy Division there is no U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, REM etc...

and alternative rock as we know it would not exist.

I've read on how the Pistols had marked the beginning of the end of the punk movement in the UK. Once they hit the U.S., Americans basically thought punk was just a fad or something. Good point about Joy Division. They definitely were a start of a new thing when punk was dying. The Cure and 'em also played a part, same with Siouxsie once she got tired of the Pistols.

They didn't even realize it was them who created punk.

If it weren't for proto-punk innovaters like the MC5's, The Velvet underground and the Kinks.

Punk would of never existed.

Punk was pretty much a manifestation of all those acts, with just more added distortion. (And less message in the case of the Sex Pistols.)

But back to this song.

Patti Smith, was def harnessing proto-punk on this record.

It's so sparse. But it does the job.

And it really showcases her vocal rage.
