He was in my music theory classes textbooks and the articles were positive with a picture of him from the bad tour. It was about him skyrocketing to fame in the 80's and mentioned the 90's briefly.

Probably they have to mention him in the music textbooks.

yeah it was music theory and history, other non-white artists were mentioned too time to time

but I mostly see white artists in those texts, the spice girls being mentioned and not MJ sounds artrocious though....is the book you mentioned uk based? I know they broke records there that mirrored some of the Beatles records. I know MJ did big things in the UK though I'm not sure about Elvis and whether he did more or less than him.

Yes, published by Oxford University Press.

I actually prefer Rebbie's version that MJ produced and did backing vocals on.

Listening to Whatever Happens (underrated song and should have been a single) and I love the hand claps Michael does spontaneously during the recording of his vocals. It's those moments that you know it's MJ in his element.

Since you guys brought up "Whatever Happens" ....

It's one of the best songs on "Invincible", yeah. A lot of that disc was really good but it got overlooked. confused

Look, every last one of us has days where we think we suck, and days where we think we rock. I don't think MJ was any different, but for whatever reason the fan community likes thinking of MJ as a damaged perma-victim riddled with self-hatred. confused

I agree it's not as bad as fans make it out to be, even if he has had regrets at times. LMP put it best when she said he sees himself as an artist.

Well that poem definitely proves he wasn't someone who was always self-doubting himself. Hell we all have moments of self-doubt but Michael was more triumphant and confident than he was tragic and "defeated". Don't believe all that you read on what transpire in his final years...

I don't think Michael was riddled with self-hatred. I just remember hearing saying on several occasions he didn't like how he looked, although he was comfortable with it overall. Especially on the Schmuley tapes (I think) where he's like "I look at pictures of myself and go 'Eeech'." You have no idea how that broke my heart. sad

Seeing this made me happy to know he saw the beauty in himself, inside and out. I think I'll print this out and hang it up. It's beautiful, and it'll help me keep positive about my appearance too. smile

I highly doubt he really spent a large portion of his life thinking he was fucking ugly. lol

I know, even I thought that was funny after I read it back. lol

It was true though, that's one dude that would've never had to beg or pay for booty, he had access to way more free and easy ass than most dudes ever will in the course of their lifetime, hell the online fan forums alone are like 80 percent female. wink

So do most rockstars. If groupies/fanatics are the major reason that made him think he wasn't that ugly after all...that's a sad life.

I don't know about self-hating or self-destructing but I always thought MJ was never really fully confident with the way he looked...well, maybe at times...Even LMP said "he's an artist. If he sees something he doesn't like in the mirror, he changes it. He has every right to do that". confused

I can't imagine what it's like to be called 'the sexiest/most beautiful man on earth' by fans and "the ugliest/most weird looking man on earth" by tabloids, comedians or sometimes general public...

But it's so nice to see that note...

spit You made me spit my drink! lol

I seriously hope you're right, tho. And I don't think his self-perception came solely from groupies and fans. I think he was, most of the time, happy with his looks and the time and effort he took to dress in beautiful outfits, the make up, the hair...I can tell he took a lot of pride in his appearance. Someone who doesn't like himself wouldn't put that much effort.
