from Wikipedia:

However, Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune writes, ""Born This Way" feels rushed – from the cheesy, photo-shopped cover art to the hyperventilating music. It is the sound of a major artist sprinting to please everyone all the time."[69] Los Angeles Times writes, "She’s speaking to everyone, it seems, except fans of artistic innovation. Say what you want about Lady Gaga, but nuance is not one of her strong points, nor is musical adventure. She’s unsubtle in her message, unsubtle in her dress, and, most important, unsubtle aesthetically... If Gaga had only spent as much time on pushing musical boundaries as she has social ones, “Born This Way” would have been a lot more successful."[70] Chris Richards of The Washington Post found it "boring", writing, "Yes, "Born This Way" is a dark, dense and surprisingly aggressive listen... [but] at its worst, it sounds like reheated leftovers from some '80s movie soundtrack."[71] The Boston Globe called the album "the most deflated moment in pop music this year," saying the album lacks cohesion and the songwriting "feels thin." [72] Rich Juzwiak of The Village Voice commented that Gaga's "we-shall-overcome sentiment" is expressed more effectively through the album's "egalitarian use of house beats" than through her "sloganeering", which he found "trite" and "[un]insightful".[66] The Independent gave Born This Way three out of five stars. While complimenting her vocal range, criticised the diversity within the album and stated "the broader she spreads her net musically, the less distinctive her art becomes."[61] Evan Sawdey of PopMatters gave the album a five out of 10 rating and dubbed it "her weakest album to date", commenting that it "fus[es] some daring songwriting with some remarkably repetitive themes and beats"

JESUS H.CHRIST, they are completely wrong disbelief

FUCKIN' JERKS, NOWADAYS ANY ASSHOLE IS A CRITIC...

I must admit, there are parts of those comments I agree with. I'm not a fan by any means, but I liked the singles on The Fame and thought they were some of the strongest pop singles of the last decade. I wanted to like BTW and really 'get into' Gaga, hoping I'd find more here to really dig into musically, but would've settled for just some more catchy singles (I got 'Marry The Night' from it for that). Only Heavy Metal Lover really grabbed me beyond that. It feels rushed to me too. I don't find it boring as there's way too much going on for that, but I agree with the 'artistic innovation' comment. Everything on it felt like sounds I'd heard before by MGMT, Utada Hikaru or whoever, so maybe the hype that this would be some amazing new kaleidoscope of pioneering new pop sounds had my expectations too high. When I went back to it again after the first listen the main thing I got from it was how strong her singing is. For me the lyrics seem to swing from funny and clever to absolute rubbish, but I'm never that fussed about lyrics if the music's good. Generally I just get this feeling from it of trying too hard, lacking a little substance (behind a forced and knowing show of eclecticism), and of it being a little rushed. After more listens I don't think it's a bad record but I'm not finding music that really moves me and some of the repetitive vocal gimmicks are really starting to work my nerves, so this casual/non-fan/interested observer will have to stay that way for now. I'll wait for the next one. wink

I forgot to mention when I listened to the album the first time I sat down with the booklet and read the lyrics like I used to do obsessively and I have to say the lyrics are very weak. It's pop music so I don't think it takes anything away from the enjoyment of the music but these are some mediocre lyrics.

I did notice that the lyrics to "Bad Kids" include quite a few lines that are not featured in the album version. I wonder if there will be a 12" version?

yep, some of the lyrics are so bad that they actually RUIN certain songs... this is PURE pop I guess, but still nowhere as bad as Abba, lol the kings & queens of bad lyrics...

and thank you for the bigger ass picture, definitely in my personal desktop for the next couple of weeks wink cool

Lots of high quality pics of Gaga here:

You saying the GaGa song ain't worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence or what?

I'm bemused anybody could fail to notice the similarities, it's like a verifiable fact.

DJ White Shadow? for fucks sake lol

This subject is beyond tired at this point, but the only similarity I hear is in a bit of the chorus melody. That's it. Pat Leonard's EY beat is horn and percussion driven. The BTW beat is techno and gritty. Hell, "Hair" is closer to Pat Benatar's "We Belong" than BTW is to EY, in my opinion. Doesn't detract from the fact that "Hair" is a fuckin' awesome battle cry for misunderstood youth.

I do like the song anyway, it's just that I remembered the itch of a particular Madonna track it gave me and a google search just now threw it up straight away.

Next singles should be (in order):

Heavy Metal Lover

Black Jesus + Amen Fashion

Gov't Hooker

Scheibe

Fashion of His Love

Bad Kids

Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)

There's no way they'd release them all, but if they did, that's my list.

I do admit that the album is flawed. It could be a near excellent 10 tracks album, but she just wanted this album to be campy, excessive, even dalinian...On that level, the album is a success. And many critics still don't get it, that's what pissed me off. Some critics didn't get Queen music in the 70's, or Bat Out of Hell, or Exile on Main Street or even the White Album, or Tricky, Goldie, Jilted Generation, etc. Some critics are just not PREPARED to review certain albums.

As a fan, I'm satisfied with the album. As I've said, even the bad songs ( 5 or even 6) are fascinating for the wrong reasons lol, but never dull or boring...some songs off The Fame were just dull...BTW is an exhausting album and I'm loving it...

Yep, I found the filler on The Fame to be the most remarkable drop off in quality from the singles of any album I'd ever heard. lol BTW by comparison is more consistent to me, but doesn't hit the same heights.

My wife's not a music snob like I sometimes am. Aside from old soul & RnB stuff like Stevie or Marvin 90% of the time she simply wants to dance and have fun. She loves tracks like 'Just Dance', 'Lovegame' and 'Poker Face'. They're perfection to her for that need. She looked at me like 'wha???' when she first heard the other album tracks. Tellingly she hasn't found anything on BTW that makes her shake her ass, so it shouldn't be assumed that all folks who aren't feeling the album are jealous in some way, or haters, have an agenda, or are stuffy and don't want to dance and have fun.

the usual suspects: Boys Boys Boys (wtf lol), Money Honey (it sounds cheap, like a Ke$ha song or something), Brown Eyes (shrug) , Disco Heaven (I don't truly like those retro fake disco experiments, if you're gonna make a disco song, do it right!), Starstruck (shit-hop), Paper Gangsta ( neutral) And I don't like the juvenile spirit of the album. At this early point, GaGa was in the same room with Ke$ha, Xtine, Britney, Beyoncé, RiRi, Katie Perry, etc. Hell, it IS a product of its time (2008-2009). The Fame Monster and BTW contain the true sound of GaGa. cool

Lyrically, does anyone find the album to be "too gay?" After "Born This Way" was released there was some pissing and moaning about how she is too focused on the gay community and that she was going to alienate her straight fans. I don't know, maybe there are some coded messages that only the gays will understand but the lyrics seem fairly ambiguous to me. I don't think they are great but they don't appear to be pushing a sinister gay agenda either.

At this early point, GaGa was in the same room with Ke$ha, Xtine, Britney, Beyoncé, RiRi, Katie Perry, etc. Hell, it IS a product of its time (2008-2009). The Fame Monster and BTW contain the true sound of GaGa. cool

Yikes, that's nearly half the album! I thought you were pretty high on The Fame.

She said last year the fame wasn’t her just something to break into the business. *shrugs* All you fame lovers take it or leave it. lol

lol Yeah I think a part of her don't even remember recording it because she was high for most of those sessions, her words. lol I just read she was REAL high when she came up with "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich", which I just heard played on a commercial for an upcoming show on "Investigation Discovery". lol

Tellingly she hasn't found anything on BTW that makes her shake her ass, so it shouldn't be assumed that all folks who aren't feeling the album are jealous in some way, or haters, have an agenda, or are stuffy and don't want to dance and have fun.

not even Judas??? eek I seriously have a HARD time to stand still whenever that jam pops up...

Apparently not. lol She doesn't want to keep the whole album on the computer so we're going to have one more full listen to it now and decide which tracks to keep in our 'various' folder.

MY COUSIN WORKS IN A PHARMACY AND SHE SAID THEY ENEMA'D PRANCE INTO OBLIVION WITH FENTONILS!!

After hearing the WHOLE album, I don't get that at all. I have to admit I did a video where I judged where she was going with her material after the release of the song (I deleted it like minutes later lol, and did a more two-sided approach on it but I deleted that, I don't like when I do vlogs, I look awkward as hell). But after hearing the album (least the standard version), I don't get the "too gay" vibe at all. Even "Highway Unicorn". It's more like some bad, cheap version of a "Jem" episode (and don't hate, "Jem" was hot) than anything. lol I get a more "this is for the misfits" vibe from SOME of the songs (particularly BTW, Hair, Bad Kids, etc.) But there's other songs where that's not even the message at all (the rest of the album).
