You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Swedish band "The Roots Of Funk" performs a solid cover-version of this imo cool. The synth-chords are on point, especially the intro-part.

Another from their 1989 album. Their first and only deal for Capitol Records after leaving the Total Experience label.

The new jack-era was coming in full effect, and they recorded some tracks in this genre for the album sessions,

not much later followed by Charlie's first solo-project, also including swingbeat recordings. But this following one

from "Round Trip" caught my attention. Great mid-tempo, co-written by Ross Vannelli (brother of Gino) :

Charlie produced half of Pebbles's debut album. "Take Your Time" and "Do Me Right" were both him in addition to "Mercedes Boy."

One of their most underrated songs. I have the 12 inch version of this song and it's

awesome. Can't believe this song didn't catch onto radio well. I used to play

the hell out of the first side of this album. Wednesday Lover was tough too.

Lonnie Simmons is why.

Charlie was supposed to be writing a book, but I don't know if he's still planning to do it.
