I remember when I first heard that 25-30 second snippet of this song. This is probably my favorite outtake from the Thriller session, but I just couldn't see it on the actual Thriller record. It sounds like the love child of Baby Be Mine and PYT but would have made a great b-side
I first heard the sample to this cut back in 2007-2008 and I said the same thing. It would have definitely been a great B-side, a classic one at that. You just couldn't go wrong with those LA musicians who played on this cut. The whole production is just ridiculous. I could've seen this being a hit too.
It would most def been a hit, but Baby Be Mine or PYT would have had to be replaced (in my opinion)

see, i hate 'PYT' with a PASSION, and i really like 'got the hots' (it doesn't sound anything in the school of 'PYT' at all to me; i find the arrangement to be a vast improvement).
i'm obviously gonna get a lot of dis-agreement here, but for me, 'thriller' could have done without 'PYT', 'the girl is mine', 'thriller', 'billie jean' (the 'clean' version that ended up on the album) and 'beat it'. those songs make me not wanna listen to the album.
if 'got the hots', 'carousel', 'nite line', a version which sounded like one of the demos of 'billie jean' (where i think he sounded angrier and less clean),
...and the same arrangement as the album version of 'thriller', but with the 'starlight' lyrics- plus the FULL 6-minute version of 'lady in my life- THEN you got an album that is classic! yeah, y'all can get mad at me, but i think as a whole, 'thriller' is a weak album. he got harder and less glossy after that period, and he was awesome for that.
Thriller could have done without The Girl Is Mine and replaced with a record like Behind The Mask. Starlight is a nice demo, but if we would've got Starlight, we wouldn't have the Thriller video
Hot Street's production reminded me too much of Thriller. Nite Line would have been a nice addition, but it would've been that song that just sticks out because it doesn't fit the mood of Thriller.

Yeah it's my second favorite cut on the album. It's probably the most underrated and less-talked about track on it, but it's also one of the most appealing tracks on that entire album. It's better than the overplayed "Thriller" and "Beat It," in my opinion. A sheer R&B/pop, mid-tempo ballad that suited Michael best.

i do recognize the historic/artistic value to the 'thriller' film (and i even commend it as a brilliant move), but as a whole i'm not all that into it. there are some great shots in the film but i think 'bad', 'ghosts', etc. fare much better. even 'can you feel it' in a funny way.
'behind the mask' would have been an improvement over 'thriller' on the album, in my opinion. but if you had to leave the arrangement of 'thriller' i prefer 'starlight'.
i guess i don't necessarily see thriller as having any sort of theme. i just see it as a bunch of pop songs stuck together. 'dangerous', 'bad', 'invincible', 'blood on the dance floor' and ESPECIALLY 'HIStory' do a better job at placing the albums like chapters in a book. thriller, to me, seemed to be done for one main goal: to have the greatest-selling album of all time. i think the album suffered for that.
and when the sales were not as great as thriller (even though michael was openly depressed about that) his art fared better, for not trying to make another 'thriller'.
Rarity, but goodie B-side from the Thriller period...smokin' cut.
Can't Get Out of the Game is the extended version to You Can't Win. All MJ did was change "game" to "rain"

you got that right!!!
i was at work one day, and that song was playing, and this guy (who told me two days earlier that he played the 'thriller and 'off the wall' albums at a party) asked me what album the song was on.
i said, 'dood! it's on thriller! i thought you told me you played the thriller album at a party!' he said something like, 'well, i don't pay attention to all the songs.' i can't tell you how many people ask me what album that song is on.
it's the same thing, when i have people tell me they like all of michael's albums. i ask them if they like 'looking back to yesterday' or 'forever, michael'... they then go, 'oh well, i guess i don't know all his albums...' people around me go, 'you can't ever stump her when it comes to michael...'
i don't think that's true, but on albums you usually cannot.
Never knew that...you learn something new everyday. It does sound exactly like "You Can't Win."
Heres the full version.
I've heard it. I've been blasting this cut on my iPod alot too. I can't believe "Can't Get Outta..." was connected to "You Can't Win."

it's got more of michael's heart and soul in that film. it is really 'from the mind of michael jackson'. you see him working out a lot of his struggles there. like, when he looks in the mirror, when the 'mayor' calls him 'freaky boy'; we all know that the 'mayor' represents media and society, but is that also what michael thought of himself at one point? is that what his father told him?
and when the mother slaps her son upside the head, and when the gust of wind knocks her upside the head... that is an OBVIOUS commentary on child abuse. i think 'ghosts' is very compelling in looking at the psychology of film, and in many ways, michael was letting us know what was going on with him, as much as he felt he could publicly say to people, i guess. nothing seems coincidental in thiat film at all.

Yeah the original version of You Can't Win (which is vocally different from the version we hear on the movie) is the best version to me. I used to think CGOTR was recorded for Thriller a few years ago too, until I heard the original mix

I agree!
I get irritated when people say that he had a career with J-5 and had a couple of hits with his brothers afterwards such as "Shake Your Body" and "Blame It On The Boogie," but his solo career started with Off The Wall.
NOT...The man had been making quality albums and singles during the Motown-era that just go unnoticed by many. Many don't even know that "Got To Be There" was a solo MJ track, but they get confused because it gets tucked on several J-5 compilations. Every one of the J-5 and Jacksons albums (including his solo Motown output, which has a story of its own) has to be taken into account in order for one to understand the musical legacy of Michael.
Looking Back To Yesterday is another album that deserves more credit too, because even though it is a compilation, the rare stuff on that album is just relevatory.

Ghosts only slays Thriller because it's a longer short film. Had Thriller been over 30 minutes like Ghosts, it would've been a real...well...THRILLER *corny*

I like the message songs, but sometimes I could do without them. Not saying some of them were corny, but I usually skip them when they come on. Man in the Mirror is the only one I most likely wont skip

Seriously, I would have loved if Thriller was a little bit longer. Maybe showed footage of MJ going to Ola's house to pick her up (in the film they were watching)

I'm with ya on that. I wonder what they did before they "ran out of gas". Dancing at a soda shoppe? Prom? What?

Thats what I'm saying. Although it did get straight to the point, I would have loved to see something like
Showing them at school and MJ's friends saying "just ask her out!" and MJ laughing and saying something like "yeah right! she wouldnt be caught dead with someone like me" when the whole time she DOES like him. He approaches her with a simple "hi" while Ola's friends giggle and walk off, leaving them 2 alone. MJ compliments her a few times and then asks her out on a movie date. THEN, show them leaving from the movie theater. Ola saying "we should stop and get gas" and MJ replying with "don't worry! we have enough" and then.........................................

The album could've definitely had more justice without "The Girl Is Mine." I actually like that song, but it would've been better suited for just a warm-up single, which it was in the first place. After the reception it got, they should've reconsidered and used a better track. An uptempo funk-pop cut would've been a perfect choice after "Baby Be Mine" too!

now, if THIS version were on it:
THEN it would be great... but they just HAD to add mc cartney, didn't they? listen to that! the strings are lush... everything about it is richer. it sounds more like a jazz-pop song, as opposed to schmaltz.
