I love Evelyn! I have her 3-disk box set which is required listening for any funk fan. And she could sing a ballad too! She doesn't get any credit for having such a powerful, soulful voice at 16. She sounded 40!
What's this box set? I've looked around online and can't find mention of it anywhere.

Saw her in concert last night and she mentioned that she will be on a future episode of "Unsung".She also said that the cameramen were filming footage that would be used on the episode.Since I was in the front row, dead center,I may actually be seen
70s disco flashback: "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King (1978)
LOVE ME some E.C.K.! I met her twice. Once when I was a Senior in h.s. (I got detention for skippin' Chemistry, 7th Period) so I could get to Boston to have my album autographed ("Call on Me") and again when I was 24 in Boston. She's very, very sweet. She's a Gemini. That's WHY. I'm elated that she's being featured on "Unsung," but it saddens me, too, that she should have been more SUNG than UNsung, y'feel me? The sista is BAD! And that lower register she sings in and those single note runs are unsurpassed! It's 'bout time Miss Evelyn gets her props. I'd LOVE to see her get with Jam & Lewis and do a Flyte Tyme CD! Evelyn, I love you, girl! xo
It's called "Legends." It's a 3-Disc set that came out in 2008, I believe. I have it too. There are 36 songs all remastered. There is no booklet or any track info; just 3 gloriously remastered discs of all her shit from 1977-1985 on RCA. Check on either Amazon or Ebay and type in "Evelyn Champagne King Legends" and see if u can scoop yourself up one. It's BANGIN'! Good luck!

I just checked on Amazon and it shows a pic, but none are available. Try Ebay. U might fare better there. And I stand corrected, it came out in 2007, not 2008. Apollo G's. Hehe.

When they first released those box sets, they were dirt cheap. I got a brand new, sealed one for $12. They went out of print rather quickly.

a few interesting things that could be discussed on her Unsung...
***In 1981,she had a major disagreement with her record company. They wanted to her drop the "Champagne" from her name. Thus, the 1981 album 'I'm In Love' doesn't feature her famous nickname. The label argued that the nickame sounds "like a kid's name" Evelyn bluntly told them "How many kids do you know that drink champagne?!" She won the war and the name returned on all future records.
***Evelyn was dissatisfied with her second and third album, insisting that the record label had no idea what the young kids were listening to."I go to nightclubs,so I know what's hot with the young people",she said. She didn't care for songs like "Music Box",which I agree is not a great tune by any means. The label finally wised up in 1981,pairing her with Kashif for the 'I'm In Love' and 'Get Loose' albums.
***Many people assume that "Shame" was her debut single but actually, her first single was the repetitive "Dancin Dancin Dancin",a mediocre disco tune that went nowhere.
***her sixth album 'Face 2 Face' featured a few songs written and produced by Andre Cymone. She was a huge Prince fan and wanted to work with him too.
I can't recall the whole story, but Evelyn had a daughter who was suffering from an illness in the 80's. Her daughter died shortly after "The Girl Next Door" was released in 1989. She was very young. I think she was around 5 or 6 years old when she died.
