although it's cool that arcade fire won the award, i still think it's pretty lame that

they didn't get the award when they had an album (funeral) that was 1.000.000

times better than suburbs.

but oh well, at least they got one now.

Agreed. Although they're not my kind of band ( I prefer Vampire Weekend, etc.), I'm glad that an indie group finally get their props. I'm especially happy 4 Esperanza as well. As a music lover I feel it's a step above the usual cookie-cutter cogs in the machine. It looks as if the Grammys were trying to head in that direction this year. If that's the case, then better late than never.cool

Janelle Monae was amazing!!! Stage diving at the grammys? I LOVE IT!! I love when she does that gritty voice for "Cold War" Fits the song better.... at the end when she singing "don't you cry when i say goodbye" I love it... Simple genius.

And She down BLEW up on Twitter... Going from only being known by big music fans to number 2 twitter topic in the world. Was just the top twitter topic in Los Angeles!

I think it was Janelle's night. I think she'll see the biggest spike in sales from tonight!

She's got Prince calling her his favorite artist. Stevie Wonder memorizing all her songs! and Beyonce is currently back stage telling everyone she's going to a party with Janelle Monae. I think you can say she became a big star tonight! biggrin

Okay, since the other thread closed, I had to pull your post over here to respond to it. lol

Agree. I love that she doesn't fit just into one category of music just like Prince doesn't. She's not afraid to take risks with her music, as well as not afraid of the criticism that some within the hip-hop generation may not be used to, because of the manufactured and sampled music many in that generation is used to hearing. Beyonce always seems to want to party to the next big thing. lol I hope she doesn't collaborate with Beyonce.

THAT was Arcade Fire? Ugh. Someone tell that dude that playing 32nd notes on the eighth and ninth frets does not constitute a solo.

Fail.

I was very proud of Janelle's performance! She rocked her lil 3:00. If anybody has any musical taste in the slightest, they'll be checking for her record. She was impressive. I wished she had more time but she made the best of it. Let's vote Ken Erhlich out of the producer's chair. Hey, if the people of Egypt can get Mubarak out of office, who knows what we can do razz He's wearing me out with these unneccessary, collaborations.

Bruno should've stuck to the original format with his song. His rendition last night didn't work for me.

Yolanda has always been a beast!

I didn't think Dre would get so much love from a Grammy crowd. I wasn't blown away with his performance but a few polls have him, Em and Rih as the best performance of the night? I'm I missing something? Personally, I'd love to see Dre at the piano and rhyme and direct a band.

I watched this last night. I actually thought it was a pretty good show. I could "see" the talent in all of those who performed... except Justin Bieber. I was expecting A LOT more from him. I didn't think his voice or his dancing was all that great. Plus... he looks like such a little kid. I read he was 16 years old? Is he 16 years old?

I just don't think he's that great.

And for him to even think he had a chance to beat-out Esperanza Spalding:

Yes, Janelle is awesome with the creativity in her music. I first checked her out back in 2006 and when she did some backup singing for Outkast. Very talented. I heard she wrote some songs for Outkast's movie "Idlewild".

For all of the talk (deservedly so) about Janelle Monae, I was disappointed to see Erykah Badu overlooked. Return of the Ankh was one of the best albums of the year, for my twocents. It also would have been nice for the Academy to recognize Gil Scott-Heron's remarkable I'm New Here.

But congrats to everybody, including Arcade Fire and Sade.

Random Thoughts:

-RETHA Tribute. Too long. Xtina with the different color mic stand falloff. Get off it already, chubby.

Has Jen Hudson been sending her all the food she stopped eating or what??

Florence was the best part of this tribute.

How about cutting that shit a bit and giving Lady T deserved respect instead of a half-sec shot in the middle during the In Memoriam...and not even give her the fuckin screen to herself. That was some serious bullshit. pissed

-Ricky Martin...first wtf was up with those pants??? Secondly, just cause you finally came out you don't now have to do EVERYTHING that's gay. lol

-Gaga...fuck it Gaga, kill 'em if they hate you. shrug Love the song and the performance was fun. I don't care if it sounds like Express Yourself (I honestly don't hear it that much) or Itsy Bitsy Spider, so the fuck what. Lavaux sounds like Automatic, Fergalicious sounds like Supersonic, Strong Enough sounds like I Will Survive and blahblah fart

-The whole Bruno Mars/Janelle thing was great!

-Justin Beiber and Ben (Usher) Vereen, I hate u both. THANK GAWD I'd accumulated enough on my dvr to skip both your asses.

-Bob Dylan and 28 Hillbillies...I wanteed to kill myself 30 seconds into that whole thing.

Holy shit, you couldn't understand this dude before. Was that just static coming out his mouth??

-Why does Lady Antebellum always make me think of a fab hag going out with her favorite gays? She is too cute.

-Ceelo KA-MF-KAWWWWWWWW! Best of the night. Gwenneth's shoes. love

-Did Katy Perry really need to be strapped in for that? I thought she was gonna try to pull a P!NK lol

"Ben (Usher) Vereen" LOL!!! Good one. He did say that Ben is his "godfather". And why is he all on Justin's nuts? Geez.

Good show. Dug Lady Gaga's performance. Even though she reminds me of Madonna from 1989-90 she puts on a good spectacle.

I was glad to see Aretha speak. I hope she pulls through.

Janelle rocked it.

I hollered when Esperanza won. She really deserved it. I may start to have a little faith in the Grammy board from now on.

Mick Jagger KILLED it. This dude is 67??!!?? I got tired watching him. I know Ray Ray has now NO

plans to go back to T.T.T after last night. He's doing his thing.

And Barbra singing "Evergreen" was fantastic. Another great highlight.

Most of what people that are fans of particular acts is on the initial nominating ballot that goes out to NARAS voting members - they just don't get the votes.

The Grammys are voted on by its own: musicians, singers, producers, songwriters, etc that qualify. It is the reason Beiber and Drake don't win, thank goodness.

It is not like People's Choice or American Music Awards, which are more like popularity contests.

That's what's so bittersweet about it. After decades of great indie music goes unnotices, this is the album that breaks down the barrier? I honestly can't think of a worse album from 2010 to do it.

Well im not a fan mainly because its a HYPE band, ok stuff, but im not hearing "best band ever" stuff coming from them, they are about 5-7 albums of solid stuff from that kind of praise and even then..no. I feel that sometimes, many times, its a token win, like when Denzel won for that garbage work in "Training Day", but lost his other awards of great work, its almost like these award shows have guilt complexes, which is bullshit, if you vote for something you like more, than stick to it, dont say "this is the year to give it to an indie band" thats BS 100%

Both. The full name of the singer is Sade Adu and the band named itself Sade (it was originally Pride I believe until the original lead singer left and the band went from new wave to R&B).

Exactly right. Funeral would have been a worthy victor. Even Neon Bible would have been a decent choice. However, The Suburbs has made me totally rethink my fandom of Arcade Fire - I dislike it that much. lol

Also just to comment on the performances which i finally checked them all out, as i forwarded through this show that was better than BAD but worse than Good, im not going to comment on winners because in most categories i wouldnt have even nominated half the artists that were, and also the awards are meaningless since there are about 90 of them and 10 on the show.

Performances i dug, mainly that Norah,Keith Urban andJohn Mayer deal, now Mayer is a dick as a person but has some chops, and Keith, well i hate corny commercial country but most country artists can play shit and write good stuff, and Norah well she always can deliver, just too bad the best performance was 90 seconds. Katy perry was awful, Usher and Beiber, corny wack shit, Rihanna well she is hhot and i know people were dogging her for wardobe BUT for once she was actually doing something that people said she was denying...."jamaican styles" and of course she gets dogged for it, however the people saying that are the same ones that thought it was cool when Akon was boucing some reggae dancer chick off his groin, because it was part of the act? As for DRAKE, ok, now you may think he is "catchy" but if you think he can rap or has skills, then you need to be thrown of a building, he sucks and is corny and his moves are weak and lame. Arcade Fire were a mess, i was waiting for them to have a juggler and a clown on fire on stage too, too busy, distracttions to try and cover for limited musicianship. The rest of the stuff was pretty good, most of all, not good or bad.
