Y'know your opinion like everyone else's here on the org is subject to personal choice, but I gotta believe you just picked 4 of the best songs to be called the weakest of SITKOL. If I had to pick any at all on that album you could've had "Sir Duke", "Summer Soft", "Black Man", "Contusion".

Some people. If they had said "Conversation Peace", I wouldn't be bothered, but SITKOL?!?!?!

Both great. No pass needed.

PE-Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos-Party for your Right to Fight. This had to be a front office Def Jam decision. 18th song on the platter. 17 would've made it perfect

since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

Of course it's just my opinion. The original poster cited "Baby Be Mine" as a weak track and it's probably my favourite song on Thriller. "Love's In Need Of Love Today" would be an ok song...at three minutes long. At seven minutes it's torture. It's just much too repetitive and, frankly, I find it a bit depressing.. As far as the other three go I find them to be pretty mediocre, musically speaking. I'm not really crazy about the keyboard sounds on those songs. Stevie was usually great at making synthesizers sound warm and human but those songs leave me feeling cold. In general I feel that Songs In The Key Of Life is vastly overrated. There are some absolutely fantastic songs on there but for me there is a higher percentage of filler than on any of his other albums from his classic period (1972-1982).

I think part of the problem I have with Songs In The Key Of Life is the pacing of side A. He kicks the album off with three fairly slow and somber songs and for me it's a bit off putting. It's funny that you mention "Contusion" and "Sir Duke" as being two of the worst songs as in my opinion they deliver a much needed kick in the pants.

If it makes any difference I know where you are coming from because it kills me how badly some folks rip on Emancipation. That may be my favourite of all of his albums but it doesn't get much love. Quite often when people suggest that it should have been a single album the songs they list as being the worst are among my favourites.

I give "Saturn" and "Easy Goin' Evening (My Mama's Call)" a pass since they were on the bonus ep and not really part of the proper album.

I've always thought that Fight For Your Right sounded out of place with the rest of the songs on the Beastie Boys License To Ill album.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I might catch some heat for this but as for as weak songs on the Thriller album, The Girl Is Mine is mediocre but I believe the weakest track on that album is Thriller.

With the exception of the Vincent Price rap, that song is weak. That song is more visual than audio, the video actually enhances the song. I can't really listen to that song without the video.

The demo is.

I wouldn't say it gets a free ride anyway, neither 'Just Good Friends'. They're regularly beat on.

And 'Automatic'? no way. 'Free' sucks though.

And nothing is weak on 'Songs In The Key Of Life'.

Infact i'm convinced some young people (after reading about these old albums, and checking them out) are alarmed and mistake old-school classic songs with just sounding old-fashioned to their ears. Understandable as great melody and real instruments are dead in the mainstream, but more fool them for being so blinkered.

But bless those few that 'get it' and are inspired.

cool

Agreed, and I'd rank it way above Thriller as a single. As a standalone song I actually think Thriller is weak. Without the video I doubt it would have the legacy.

my feelings are hurt by naming the following song choices as "weak";

baby be mine - ok seriously, that's one of the STRONGEST on the album. Just michael's vocals ALONE are enough to make a gay woman or a straight man jump on his junk lol

Have a talk with God, Love's in need of love today, Village Ghetto Land, Past time paradise...that REALLY hurt my feelings! not 2 days ago on FB did i name these EXACT songs as reasons why I LOVE AND ADORE stevie wonder. (literally these exact same songs. i'll get my post if you don't believe me lol) those songs are not only genius, but thought and emotion provoking. he brings social and civil consciousness with these songs and to me, that's what makes them beautiful.

Maybe Free gets a free pass. It works but is probably the weak link on 1999.

Automatic, on the other hand, is probably one of the top 10 songs for anybody who really gets Prince.
