I met Teena a few years ago at in-store...had her sign a bunch of stuff. When I told her how much I loved Emerald City that it was my favorite record she just made this face and kept signing like I hadn't said anything. You had to be there, but it was so funny...like she thought I was trying to kiss her ass with my remark and she wasn't in the mood for it.

Wow, maybe she didnt like that album? lol perhaps she was having a bad day. im just suprised, ive only ever heard positive things about her. Id expect that attitude more from a diva like Whitney Houston lol, not Teena.

No, Teena was fine. She didn't have an attitude or anything like that, not at all. She signed all my stuff, she just didn't have a conversation with me about Emerald City, which I didn't expect her to. The look on her face though when I brought it up was classic. You really had to be there. She was gracious enough to take a picture with me, which turned out really great. Far as I know, Teena loved that album, but was very disappointed her audience didn't get that into it. Disappointed to the point where she seldom/never played any of that material live.

I am so shocked that Teena is no longer physically with us that it took me a moment to even post here. Here are five (thought there are more) of my quintessential Teena jams!

Ooh La La La

Square Biz

I Need Your Lovin'

Behind the Groove

Portuguese Love

Deja Vu (I know that's six but I couldn't help it!)

It Must Be Magic (ok, seven, I'll stop.)

Rest in peace, Teena. You added to my love of music:

  1. Lovergirl (Extended)
  2. Square Biz
  3. Out On A Limb
  4. Portugese Love
  5. Lovergirl (Extended Instrumental)

Not necessarily in that order.

That's all I have in my library, but definitely intend to open myself up to more Teena to see what I like.

Out on a Limb is just the BIZZNISS. And it doesn't get much better than Portuguese Love. Square Biz and I Need Your Lovin' are two more classics. Of her songs that never got much attention, this one from Robbery was always a fave...

^^The liner notes in the album say this one was dedicated to Eddie Murphy. Not sure why, though.

It certainly is nod That song is so damn emotional.Teena pours herself into those lyrics....you can really feel what she's singing.Whatever she was singing about, you could always feel it.Vocally, she was just incredible....the true definition of a soul singer.

"Portugese Love" is an exotic,latin-flavored,soulful quiet storm MASTERPIECE.The lyrics, the vocals, the music, the feel of this song.Absolutely amazing!! That latin breakdown part just blows my mind.Teena was truly a real artist who was interested in not just creating good songs, but taking the listener on a journey. This song blends soulful R&B with latin jazz and the end result is sheer brilliance.
