Dr. Dre -"Kush" (First Official Detox Track)

November 18, 2010

After years of delays, Dr. Dre has finally released an official song from his third album, Detox.

"Kush," the rapper's hard-hitting collaboration with Snoop Dogg and Akon, is streaming at Dre's web site and is now available on iTunes.

I really don't dig Akon, so that's a negative. Lyrics about smoking mad quantities of weed (on an album called The Detox rolleyes ) have been done a million times, so that's a negative, too. I smoke, though, so some of it still makes me smile (a little), that's a positive. The "beat" actually does have a bit of Dre's trademark sound to it, but it's the stuff that pushed back in the mix, another negative. I don't like the flimsy, emotionless piano line that's the loudest part of the mix. Sounds too Akonish. Regardless of all that, this album isn't going to matter. It's like Guns N' Roses "Chinese Democracy". You can't talk about an album that people WANT to hear for ten years. It builds up so much hype and anticipation (and then loses it) that A) it won't live up to expectations, B) people just won't care anymore because it's been too long. I've been more interested in hearing his album about the planets since he mentioned it than The Detox.

4 out of 10

I went back and listened a second time because I didn't catch that line the first time. It did make me chuckle. lol

Dre has said that "Kush" wasn't his choice for lead single. He insists it was rush released following a leak.

Just like the Jay-Z track was leaked. It doesn't matter anymore. Release the album - get it over with already.

Care to elaborate? A couple of blogs mentioned someone named Sly. Tell us.

No, that's not Nate Dogg. It's a dude name Sly. Dr. Dre confirmed this a few days ago in a radio interview.

Love it. It has the classic Dre sound but updated (similar to how 2001 sounded like an updated Chronic). And any time you put Dre and Snoop together, magic happens. I know Akon's gotten a lot of heat, but I think he fits perfectly in the song - I love everything about the hook (and the "inhale! exhale!" parts).

Only sad thing is that, as is evident with some of the other vocalists on the song, Nate Dogg is sorely missed.
