Michael Jackson estate, Cirque du Soleil unveil plans for 'The Immortal World Tour'

So maybe "Michael Jackson's This Is It" wasn't quite it.

The Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil announced plans Wednesday for a Jackson-themed touring production, "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour," that is set to open in Montreal in October. The arena tour, which combines the performer's choreography and music with the Quebecois acrobatic troupe's signature dance and aerial moves, will travel to 27 cities across North America and reach Los Angeles' Staples Center and Anaheim's Honda Center in January.

The production's writer-director, Jamie King, served as Madonna's creative director for the last dozen years, overseeing her 2008 "Sticky & Sweet" world tour. More crucial to his new effort, however, King previously worked with the King of Pop, serving as a backup dancer for Jackson for two years on his 1992-93 "Dangerous" world tour.

According to King, "The Immortal World Tour" combines the kind of pop spectacle Jackson was known for with the esoteric, theatrical qualities associated with Cirque du Soleil productions such as "O," "KÀ" and "Zumanity."

"From the moonwalk to the iconic choreography we've seen in 'Thriller' and 'Beat It' and 'Bad' -- all his mini-movies and music videos -- mix that with the world of Cirque," King said in an interview with The Times. "You shake it and can literally turn it on its head. Imagine taking the moonwalk to new levels, to new heights. Being able to do the moonwalk literally as if you're on the moon, all the way around the arena."

Unlike such Las Vegas-based Cirque du Soleil productions as "Love" (a joint venture between the troupe and the Beatles’ Apple Corps that re-imagines the Fab Four's music within circus-based artistry) and "Viva Elvis" (a Cirque show developed in conjunction with Elvis Presley Enterprises that launched this year), the initial idea with "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" was to "bring Michael to the fans" and create the feeling of his concerts in an arena setting, said John Branca, co-executor of the Jackson estate.

"Cirque has not done a show with Elvis or the Beatles or any other historic rock 'n' roll icon that has gone into arenas and toured North America or the world, so it was exciting to be able to do something that had not been done before," Branca said. "Ultimately, there will be a separate show residing permanently in Las Vegas. That show is a couple of years off."

From what's been said.....

-It's said to be comprised of songs recorded between 2001 and 2009 with most of them being from the 2007-2009 period

-The people confirmed to working on it are:

Teddy Riley (Given the tracks in September and recently finished his contribution)
Humberto Gatica
Greg Philliganes
Lenny Kravitz (on Another Day)
Steve Lukather
Khaliq Glover (with Teddy)
Benjamin Wright (with Teddy)

Rodney Jerkins (finished his contribution this summer)

-Some of the songs were complete but unmixed or parts that needed "polishing", and some of them were demos from what it looks like

Sony's been having meetings with the estate since October to finalize everything and some expect the announcement to come next week

from September from a MJJC member who attended the Chicago seminar

Hey guys the genius without border event on Mj was Amazing and they mention some information about the new album

Greg Phillinganes said he was hired two weeks ago to work on the new album, which is now slated for Christmas, according to the record execs. He said that it has blown him away - it is that good. He told us that we will not be disappointed. Well... he told us a couple of other things but said he'd come to our homes and kill us if we told. (Actually, it is all stuff that we already know because parts of it had already been leaked onto YouTube regarding the "Horse With No Name" rewrite.) BUT, he said that MJ was in incredible voice - as good or better than he'd ever heard him and that the album would be amazing. It was quite an endorsement - not solicited, and said in a very genuine and heartfelt manner

I have a feeling Motown will be releasing an album too in the next couple of months. Harry Weigner played some clips of Love Trip, Sunny Boy, What's So Good About Goodbye, and Wouldja? in Chicago back in September and said earlier this year that they were gonna do a follow up to "I Want You Back!: The Unreleased Masters"

I always miss these jumps to a new thread and then wonder there's been no discussion for a while. Glad I got on this soon.

Fantastic news about the Cirque show. I think the idea of doing two shows with two different concepts is genius. The touring one will be more of a concert feel with a cirque twist, and the residency will be more cirque with MJ music I assume (a la LOVE).

The only thing I don't like is the name. But I am sure I will get use to that.

More Cirque news:

Michael Jackson to be immortalized by Cirque du Soleil

More than two years after his death, Michael Jackson will be back on the road and premiering new, unreleased music with the help of Cirque du Soleil.

Yesterday, the Montreal-based entertainment giant and the Estate of Michael Jackson announced details of a $57-million touring arena show of “visuals, dance, music and fantasy” that will launch in Montreal next October before visiting at least 27 cities in North America.

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour will be written and directed by Jamie King, a concert director who has worked with such stars as Madonna, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Avril Lavigne and the Spice Girls. Chantal Tremblay, who previously ushered Cirque du Soleil hits Ovo and The Beatles: LOVE to the stage, will be director of creation.

The Immortal World Tour will feature a 65-member cast of acrobats, dancers, actors and musicians and will focus on Jackson’s “love of fairy tales, magic, music and dance,” King said in a conference call from Los Angeles.

The dialogue-less, multimedia show will not feature a single Michael Jackson impersonator, however. While there will be a live band and singers, all the lead vocals heard will be Jackson’s. “No one can sing the songs like Michael,” King said.

Through access to the master recordings of Jackson, however, The Immortal World Tour will include not just familiar hits like Thriller and Bad but brand-new remixes, mash-ups and also unreleased music. (A soundtrack recording may follow.)

According to a press release, The Immortal World Tourtakes place in a fantastical realm where we discover Michael’s Inspiration-Giving Tree – the well-spring of his creativity.” This tree is based on an actual giant oak tree King discovered on a visit to Jackson’s Neverland ranch in California while developing the show; Jackson had handles built into it and, at the top, there was a perch where he would sometimes write songs and sleep.

Travis Paine, who worked with Jackson on This Is It, will be one of several choreographers involved in the tour. King also had first-hand experience working with Jackson, having been a dancer in his troubled Dangerous Worldtour of 1992 and 1993, the final leg of which was cancelled when Jackson announced he was addicted to painkillers and was seeking treatment.

While The Immortal World Tour will include biographical elements from as far back as the Jackson 5 era, King said that the King of Pop’s darker aspects would be avoided. “This show is a celebration of his music, the man, his showmanship, all the beautiful things,” he said. “Negativity – not for us. It’s all about everything he gave to us in a positive way.”

The Immortal World Tour is just one of two Michael Jackson projects that Cirque du Soleil has on the go. The second will be a permanent show in Las Vegas, with a different director and different approach, currently scheduled to open in 2013.

Aside from Montreal, Canadian cities on The Immortal World Tour currently include Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, London, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver and Quebec City. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday.
