George Michael jailed for eight weeks for drug driving

George Michael with unidentified police officerThe singer previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence

George Michael has been given an eight-week sentence for crashing his car while under the influence of cannabis.

He was also fined £1,250 at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court in London and given a five-year driving ban.

The 47-year-old singer was arrested in July in Hampstead, north London after driving his Range Rover into a branch of photographic store Snappy Snaps.

Last month he pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs and possessing cannabis.

The singer was told then that his offences were "a serious matter" and that he could face imprisonment.

Michael will serve four weeks in prison, with the rest of his sentence spent out on licence under the supervision of the probation service.

The pop star was greeted by a horde of photographers as he arrived at court earlier.

In 2007 he admitted another charge of driving while unfit through use of drugs at Brent Magistrates Court in London.

Michael was found slumped at the wheel of his car in the early hours of 4 July having crashed it into the store frontage.

He was arrested and taken to Hampstead police station, where he was found to be carrying cannabis cigarettes.

Michael shot to fame as half of pop duo Wham! before embarking on a successful career as a solo artist.

GEORGE MICHAEL'S LEGAL HISTORY

  • April 1998 Arrested in LA for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet. Ordered to pay a $810 fine and 80 hours community service.
  • February 2006 Arrested for possession of Class C drugs. Cautioned and released.
  • June 2007 Charged with driving while unfit through drugs. Given a two-year driving ban and 100 hours community service.
  • September 2008 Arrested for possession of Class A and C drugs. Cautioned and released.
  • August 2010 Charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of Class C drugs. Given six-month interim driving ban until sentencing.
  • September 2010 Sentenced to eight weeks in prison and fined £1,250.

The singer - whose real name is Georgios Panayiotou - has made no secret of his long-time use of cannabis.

The BBC's Lizo Mzimba was in court earlier and said Michael had "gasped" when his sentence was passed down.

Michael's legal representatives said the singer was trying to get his life back on track and had started writing new material.

"For the first time in many years he has started writing again," said Mukul Chawla QC. "His creativity, so long hampered by his drug dependence, is re-emerging."

Judge John Perkins said he had heard many things in mitigation.

"I accept entirely that you have shown remorse for the offence, that you are ashamed of it, that you admitted it," he said.

"With regret," however, he said he had no alternative in this case but to give him a custodial sentence.

"It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis," he told the singer.

Prison or jail? I don't think one can go to prison for only 2 months.

We call Jails Prison here in the UK. Incarcerated either way.

He'll be OK, prison is swimming with drugs.

I'd have thought by now that George would have finished a follow-up album to his 2004 release . But regrettably, he has found satisfaction in becoming an international joke.

Well in a way I think this is a blessing, he could've gotten more time if the judge was a little bit harsher but I guess he should've seen this coming. Anyway I hope he conquers his demons.

I wonder if it'll have an impact on the 'Faith' re-release?

I bet it'll fly off the shelves. We're strange like that in the UK.

I don't see how it couldn't have an impact in the UK. Of course y'all will eat it up once the album comes out. lol Remember when Michael was in legal trouble and "One More Chance" rode up to #5 over there so yeah y'all would buy material. In a way it shows you always support legendary artists no matter what. biggrin

disbelief All he's going to do is get more drugs and more sex while locked up- somebody in there will be a fan. Of course there is the possibility that the unsanitary living conditions might sober his ass up.

8 months would have been better. The problem is he's never really had to suffer any negative consequences for his actions...which is probably why he repeats the same mistakes over and over.

he's not one of the bill hicks described pot smoking drivers, he's a popstar fucked out his fucking mind on drugs. he's not driving real slow and getting pulled over by police and looking in his rear view mirror and sniggering at the tiny cops he sees, he's fucking swerving all over the place and falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into shit. he can afford drivers, he can afford big fucking skulls made from diamonds by damien hurst, yet he chooses to drive himself whilst fucked out his head

just imagine if he went kayne on his twitter whilst fucked out his face?

Stupid motherfuckers who not only smoke pot, but then get behind the wheel of a 2000 lb vehicle because they think pot "helps them think clearer" or something as equally asinine. I love GM, but he needs time off from his addiction, and some refocusing is in order.

It sort of ticks me off in a round about way when people do this sort of shit. GM wouldn't have the life he has without the fans. It's ALWAYS thanks to the fans. Fans buy the albums, go to the shows, buy the re-issues, buy the merchandise, wait out the eccentricities of an artist, and still support them. They artists are rolling in our dough.

Now while that doesn't give us a right to dictate how they live their lives, it does feel like a smack in the face to the fans when an artist abuses that privilege of being a star, and being someone's favorite artist. What a horrible example he's become. He writes songs like "An Easier Affair", telling gay folks "don't let them use my life to bring your future down, don't let them tell you that happiness can't be found", then he goes and does stuff that is fully going to make him a hypocrite. It's all very "Do as I say, don't do as I do."

"Thank you for buying into my product, and now I am going to be a fuck up as a note of gratitude. Please buy the new $145 Faith repackage. I need more pot money."

While I don't need GM to be a role model for me, his music, and him being out, HAS effected and influenced me as a gay man, and even as a musician. I don't necessarily look up to him as a role model, but I do admire him for what he's done in his life, and what he's been through, and (most times) how's he handled it. I guess the anger comes from people knowing the talent he has, and that there are still great things in him, yet all he's doing is getting fat, staying high, and fuckin' whoever he can when Kenny's not home.

Funny that i'm not gay and GM has effected me and influenced me, I think he is role model he's the guy who was the outsider in school and made good, his background being 1st generation british and his adoption of the UK funk soul and black culture makes him and boy george role models even for straight guys..cool
