Mariah and Justin have written a handful of songs, not because they're good songwriters, but because they're trying to legitimize themselves. They're still a product of someone else, and the songs they wrote aren't very special. Singing may make up a portion of what makes somebody an artist, but I consider it more of a tool to express art than a contributor to it.

I'm not a huge fan of either artist but come on,you're being harsh lol They write songs because they're trying to "legitimize themselves"? If they were to sit back and allow a bunch of other people to write their songs (like Britney Spears does),folks would call them untalented puppets.

Yes, exactly. The token songs they write are an attempt for them to be taken more seriously, because they know that most serious music lovers DON'T respect them. That's exactly what I meant when I said they were trying to legitimize themselves

I give them credit for at least taking some control over what they sing.Songwriting is an art and not just anybody can do it.

Once again, I agree wholeheartedly. Songwriting IS an art and not just anybody can do it. But the songs JT and Mariah write aren't the ones anybody cares about. They aren't significant. They blend in with so much else. They're just not artists in my opinion, or rather, their artistry is not what got them on that list in the very slightest. They are on that list because of their popularity alone, not their artistry. Not at all.

I understand lists like this have to focus on at least somewhat well known people, but how popular you are shouldn't ultimately be the criteria that determines if you make the cut.

I give Justin Timberlake, who I don't listen to, credit for his skills in marketing and publicity. I give him credit for hanging around the right people. I give him credit for knowing his audience, for his showmanship, for not taking himself too seriously (I mean some of the comedy sketches/movies he's been a part of have been great). He is not a dumb guy, and he's made all the right moves to stay relevant. Hell, there's a reason he's still around and the rest of N'Sync are nowhere to be seen. He gets a lot of respect from me for how he well he's done. He's just not a "great" artist.

I don't care for Kels really, but from the group of the RnB cats from the 90s included on the list, he's clearly the best.

Justin? I sense shade...

The fact that a Jackson got on the list is shocking to me lol

I mean, damn, they could've included

Paul Weller, Janet, Cocteau Twins, The Doobie Brothers, Kate Bush, Tribe Called Quest, Terence Trent D'Arby on the list...

But one good thing, Thank God it ain't BET cuz we would've seen the likes of Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, and Beyonce in the top 20 lol

Yup. No room for the most talented, daring, innovative, forward thinking UK female artist in popular music. And there never is. confused

It seems like people here are taking this list WAYYY too seriously!!!

OMG, this person's on the list!

This person's got left off!

This person's too low!

This person's too high!

There's never gonna be a list that everyone is gonna agree with fully.

I think list like these are a lot of fun, and can make for some interesting conversations.

Other than that, it's just entertainment!

Hell, I'm just happy VH1's actually playing music at all!!!

If it offends you that much, make your own damn list!

I'm not a huge fan of these people, but you're crazy to think they haven't accomplished much. They've had impacted this generation of music significantly.

They have accomplished alot but i don't think alicia should be on this list, what has she done? and justin/byonce shouldn't be ranked hair than mariah carey ot the bee gees and etc. I knoe no list will be perfect but how can they think of alicia keys, jsutin timberlake, mary j blaige and not Janet Jackson or Celine Dion?

They sent the poll out to musicians. So, if you have a problem with it, blame the artists.

The network execs didn't make the list.

So, most likely some of the people that are on this list are responsible for what's on it.

No Rick James, Grace Jones or Janet Jackson?

I also have a problemwith Justin Timberlake being on this list. In fact, Britney should've made it before JT. I think her contributions to pop music is greater and more influential than his. Also, no Sex Pistols??

I'm sick and tired of people praising Nirvana. They weren't that great imo.

I'm not a huge JT fan,but come on....he at least has something that Britney lacks: TALENT lol

The idea of Britney Spears on a "greatest artists of all time" list is absurd.
