I I remember correctly, Mike was 10 in 98 (with the Jackson 5 at 44.) In 12 years, he shot up to numner 3 and the Jackson 5 are deleted.

No, I though he should have been much higher than his 40 showing the first time around, but number 3 ... of course it's cause of his death last season, we all know that.

Okay, not a horrible list, but I really don't think the following belong on this list.

Now I know some of you love all of these people, and I just want to say off the bat I'm not excluding them because I don't like them (though I don't really) -- I left a number on that list that I don't like as well. My opinion of the artists played little role in my opinion of whether they belonged or not.

I also just ignored the rappers altogether, as I am not well enough informed on any of them to decide if they deserve to be on the list or not.

It's just that these people are more performers/entertainers than artists.

For the same reason, I feel Michael Jackson is ranked wayyy to high. Not that I don't feel he doesn't deserve to be on the top 100 list - he does, just not number 1-5. Michael Jackson is undoubtedly a great and important artist - but, I personally feel his popularity came from his showmanship as much as his craft, if not more.

So true... There really is no comparison to Frank Zappa when using the word "Artist" in modern music. He deserves the first 10 spots before anybody else should even be considered.

Unless, of course, this is just a popularity contest (hint: it mostly is), in which case, carry on.

This list says the 100 Greatest Artists of all time, not the 100 Most Influential Artists of all time.

These stupid lists always get those two things mixed up and it's frustrating. Frank Zappa was popular enough to deserve recognition even if he never achieved much mainstream success. Furthermore, most artists couldn't attempt to approach Zappa's style and complex arrangements. Even nowadays, there's Frank Zappa, and then there's everything else. He virtually created a sub genre of rock by himself.

But I do agree with you that at least this list was voted by people in the music industry so you're right, it is better than most. But if it was called 100 Most Influential Artists of all time it would have more of a leg to stand on.

hmmm Performing on stage, dancing and singing is all part of being an "artist".Being an artist is more than just being able to play an instrument or two.Singing is an "art".

I disagree. I'm not saying you have to play an instrument to be an artist, you don't. I'm saying performer/showman is different than being an artist. An artist, I think, creates something new, pushes the envelope at least a little, innovates. Singing by itself isn't an art, it's a talent. A talent is necessary to meet my own subjective "artist" criteria, but does not make one an artist.

Leonard Cohen can't sing worth a damn, and I really don't know if he plays any instruments, but his craft could be defined as art.

Everyone on my shortlist list is the byproduct of a lot of other people. Images carefully created and produced and marketed.

Incidentally, I wish to retract Sade from that list. I'm not sure how she got on there. Sorry.

Edit: Ultimately I guess, if you don't compose most of your music, you aren't an artist in my books. You could argue that the way you interpret someone else's composition is what makes you an artist, and sure, fair enough, there's a level of artistry in that, but not a Top 100 level of artistry. In the same way a painter who can make carbon copies of the Mona Lisa - well, it's a very impressive TALENT, but until you create your OWN great work, you're a talented painter, not an artist

Okay,I see what you're saying. We just have different definitions of what an "artist" is lol A few of the people on your list (Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake) do more than just sing. They write songs as well.I would argue that singing and writing songs are all part of the creative process and yes,I consider it art.
