Albums and Songs of the 1970s Poll: Part Deux! It seems the other thread expired, so I thought I'd start a new one!
I'm quite busy with work at the moment, trying to put the finishing touches on my first paper submitted to an academic journal (fingers crossed!) as well as preparing for my mid-way PhD presentation, so I won't be able to compile these results right away anyway.
So, I'm proposing that we keep this poll open until I can post results! I don't have a specific deadline in mind, but let's say that you have until at least September 8th to get me your lists, as I don't see myself able to do justice to these results before then.
Happy listing!
New deadline edit! [Edited 9/1/10 0:54am] Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

My album list is done. I'll wait a day or two and let it marinate before emailing the excel file.
Now that I have additional time, I'll think about my singles list a little more. The songs are all in a master list, I just need to put them in order.

This is the only list I have for you! I can't find your songs list! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

One far less cool reason for the deadline extension is that my laptop crashed and burned in a fiery death last month, and I lost my version of the master list.
As such, I fear that I may have lost some people's lists if they sent them to me in Orgnote!
Here are the album lists that are in the books:

A personal observation...
The percentage of my music collection from the 70s has always been rather small and only recently (partly in anticipation of this thread) have I been stocking up on catalog albums from that decade--mostly ones that were the best reviewed by both critics and fans alike since, what better place to start, right? Having finally listened to them all and subsequently ranking them, I came to one conclusion:
I have a very boring list.
I heard some great albums for the very first time sure, but my list is for the most part devoid of any personal taste. Compared to my 80s and 90s lists which I felt had my own individual stamp, my 70s list is compiled of all the usual suspects and looks a lot like everyone else's list, just with the albums in a slightly different order. Yawn.
So here's my tentative top 80 albums list, if anyone really cares. Ian, it's not final until I email you the excel file before the deadline.
1. Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box (1979)
11. Siouxsie And The Banshees - The Scream (1978)
21. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
31. The Stooges - Fun House (1970)
41. The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers (1976)
51. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (1971)
61. Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (1973)
71. Roxy Music - Roxy Music (1972)
81. Dusty Springfield - See All Her Faces (1972)

I'm in the same boat, to a large degree. Although I know and enjoy a good amount of 70s albums now (but not nearly as many as I know for the 80s and 2000s), most of it consists of critical darlings and commercial juggernauts. I think it has to do with the fact that I wasn't around during the 70s, so I looked at charts and critics' lists to explore. There are a few oddities in my list, but nowhere near as many as I would have for those other decades.
The 60s will be even worse! I'll be lucky if I can put together a list of 20 albums. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

foe me....the late sixties was the greatest period in modern music....the groundbreaking albums in 1966 and 67 in particular changed music for ever......i will try and put a list of the 70s together if i get time but i will get one together for the 60s....i know your not a beatles fan but the velvet underground, beach boys , love, kinks and dylan to name a few all released stunning albums......check them out moonbeam

Oh, The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat will place highly on my 60s list, no doubt! I'm not big on Dylan or The Beach Boys, but I'm intrigued by The Kinks and Love. Same here, my 60s list might be 30 albums at the most. Compiling the results for that poll I'm guessing would be difficult for you--all Beatles!

the kinks - village green preservation society is a brilliant album.....it didnt even chart when first released in 1968 ....great pop songs......and love's forever changes is a brilliant album.....they need a few listens to sink in like the best albums always do.....

My 60s poll will definitely include at least, 150 albums, and I'll have a HARD time compiling 200 songs only...
The 60s are one of my fav decades ever, only surpassed by the magic 70s and the 80-86 years...
you can keep the 90s and the shitload of the 00s
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, I don't think all of the best albums need many listens to sink in- some surely do, though! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I listen to more albums released in the last ten years than any other decade right now. And while I haven't done a count of the 00s yet, the 90s might be the decade of which I own the most releases peaking in 1993 with 41 albums from that year in my collection. So yeah, I like a lot about each of the last five decades of music, but I'll happily take the 90s and 00s from you.

cool, you guys are very welcome ...
many of the 00s "classic" albums are so bad, random, or overrated that you couldn't pay me to listen to them...

You called Björk's Vespertine "disappointing" in another thread. That alone puts you on another planet with your opinion of the 00s.

I'm a fan of Debut and half of Post, after that, hmmmmm...
And man, many people will tell you that the 00s have been the worst decade of pop music since the 40s, and that's because of friggin' swing and WWII !!!
But if I'm wrong, and the 10s prove to be even worse than the 00s I'll gladly take my ship to Venus or whatever in 2020

Well, I found a lot of music to love from the 00s, mostly because of sites like this and acclaimedmusic providing recommendations.
I stopped at 111 albums for the 00s poll, but I could have gone on to list several more that I like. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

I own 60 or 70 albums from the 00s, the problem is: 80% of those albums are from veteran artists from other decades, or other acts that started in the 90s... "My Top10 of Best Albums from artists that started in the 00"s:
1.Roisin Murphy - Overpowered 2.Arcade Fire - Funeral 3.Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand 4.Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue 5.Arcade Fire - Neon Bible 6.MIA - Kala 7.Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree 8.Coldplay - X&Y 9.Keane - Under the Iron Sea 10.Lady Gaga - The Fame
I still believe that the 00s lacked a truly big bunch of great new bands/artists...

Think the 60s might be a bit of a mission for me.
The last decade's definitely been a bit meagre, the only new act I liked was The Strokes, and even then I was content to just rip their stuff.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, there are certainly a lot of albums from the 2000s that I love from veteran artists, but I adore each of these artists that have emerged from the 2000s:
Annie LCD Soundsystem The Strokes Gorillaz Chromeo Franz Ferdinand !!! Janelle Monae Bat for Lashes Yeah Yeah Yeahs RES Peaches
I also quite like:
Duffy Madvillain Death from Above 1979 Interpol Justice Ladyhawke The xx Wolf Parade Antony and the Johnsons Arcade Fire (had to demote them after The Suburbs)
And don't get me started on how bad Coldplay is, Tyler! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Coldplay, with their 5 CLASSIC singles of the 00s (we all know which ones), easily murder those artists/bands, minus Duffy, who is certainly my nº11 () and, perhaps, Gorillaz...
The Strokes are the worst abomination of all time, even worse than O'Town...

Coldplay have the sonic impact of a low-noise vacuum cleaner.

whatever they released 5 of the best 15 singles of the 00s...

Absolutely! They are absolutely dreadful- the indie/alternative equivalent of new age- shamelessly inoffensive sonic wallpaper. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

inoffensive? new age? hell if I want danger, I'll go to a redneck club and I'll start a fist fight there
and give me Enya's 00s albums anyday instead of any 00s "new" garage rock band [Edited 8/19/10 7:55am]
