Well, I was born in the mid 70s, so I can kind of see where they're coming from, although the way it was stated was so brash that it's funny. I barely listen to music from the 00s, as it makes me cringe (I was listening to MJ, Janet, Prince, and getting into UK dance music for the most part). I was a kid during the 90s (born in '87) so I have vivid memories from that decade

Of course, "living through" an era of music can cause a person to connect more deeply to that music than someone who didn't "live through it" would. But that doesn't prevent anyone from connecting to music of the past in a profound way. I'll use myself as an example for both sides.
I love all kinds of music from the 70's (and the 60's) because that was the decade of my childhood. I remember riding in the car, summer camp, my frist crush, etc. by the songs that were playing on the radio, record player or 8-track at the time. I connect to the music of my teen years, the 80's, in much the same way. Prince helped "get me through" my teen years.
But at the same time, much of the music made before my time I connect with as well, because a) it's timelessm, or b) I found it at key points in my life. Jazz is the most prominent example I can find, and no one can tell me I can't appreciate Kind of Blue, Speak No Evil, Somethin' Else, et cetera because I wasn't born in the 50's or 60's.
Substitute the decades and the artists I named and virtually any music fan'll tell you the same thing. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

So basically nobody is qualified to speak on the likes of classical composers...cuz hey, we weren't around for Bach, Brahms, etc.
I'm curious to know if you were born in '71. If so, you'd be less qualified to speak on the 70s than someone born in 86 would be to speak on the 90s, no? | |

I love the 90's. It was extremely eclectic, several styles of music could be popular at the same time, it was always evolving, and there were some actual superstars, either new or old, with something to say, new ways of saying it, and new sounds percolating.
The last decade has had almost none of that. | |

There are some new jack swing songs I like, but for the most part I don't like it... plus it marked the end of the 80s hip-hop and electro rhythms which I loved...

I've only come to appreciate some of it in retrospect, but I felt alienated by all of the... alienation! Plus, as my list above indicates, a lot of my very least favorite music ever was recorded during the 90s- more than any other decade, actually.
This just shows that it's entirely a matter of perspective. I can't honestly say that the 90s are any better or worse than any other decade, but this list includes a lot of the reasons that I don't like the 90s. Just an opinion- it's all good!
I still like a lot of 90s stuff, mostly from 1990-1993! I was able to get to 70 albums for the 90s poll, so it isn't a disaster.
