From someone who lived the '90s, there were lots to love about it. I loved the R&B in the early part, the hip-hop in the early part, of course this was the domination of new jack swing around this time, funky bands like Mint Condition and 'em were doing their thing, rock had very high points. Good music from '90 to around '98 for me, some good ones in '99. Thinking everyone hates the '90s is an insult to those who lived it and those who were grown by then but loved at least the early to mid period.

Well I think the creator of this thread is the person you should be saying that too. I like the 90s better, and I know the majority of the other people do as well, it's the threadstarter that apparently thinks most people like the 00s better.

Right on. Every complaint about the 2000s can be applied to the 1990s. The only major difference I see is that "slow jams" are not in fashion anymore. But a lot of defining music was not artistic in the 90s either and was meant to get a quick buck.

Since I fell into the grunge category, it meant I was only allowed to hang out with the loners, grungers, stoners, skaters and losers at school. The category (a) was the one belonging to the popular kids.

Now, looking back on it, there are some house-music songs from the 90s that I have learned to appreciate, sometimes even only for nostalgic reasons, as some songs got played to death and I was unable to escape from hearing them all the time.

That's so true... in high school we were divided into the ones listening to pop/dance/house/electronic (R&B/Hip-Hop wasn't really popular in Europe around that time but that was included too) etc (I was in that group) and the ones listening to rock/grunge whatever) with only reagge managing to 'crossover' to both groups. Everytime we were going for an excursion the class was sitting with the cd/cassette players (LOL) at complete opposite areas so we can avoid eachother's music. Also when we were going out we were all going to different pubs and for a while half the class was going to two pubs (one rock and one more poppy dancey) located exactly opposite of eachother and we were not bothering even talking to the other group because it was uncool (LOL). Like you, looking back now I appreciate the music of 'the other group' much more than I did then lol. And yeah I am 33 myself lol

The same can be said about 80's. Some of that stuff was just as gimmick as the 90's. The Real music ended after '83.

What about the 70s then, when everyone recorded a disco song for the sake of it and the hit factory never stopped? Or what about even before that, when there were hundreds of artists had no input in their stuff whatsoever other than just laid down the vocals? Wasn't that gimmicky too? These days everyone dismisses "vocalist" people and demands that an artist is "being himself" otherwise it's all "fake".

I just don't see how the 2000s are THAT worse. It's not even an argument that there's "too much hip hop" because the 90s had massive popularity with these rappers like Puff Daddy already and the likes of MJ already did the "let's throw a rap into this song" thing.

Or now people say dance music is boring because of David Guetta, but how is it any worse than all those 90s one hit wonders who dominated dance music like Ace of Base, Aqua or Real McCoy? Or how is current R&B any inferior to Boyz II Men or All-4-One?

Aaaaaand that's exactly the elitist behavior I knew that'd come out sooner or later. Your opinion is just based on memories, you were young so you enjoyed those stuff, but the older people at the time said the same as you're saying now. Congrats for becoming one of THOSE people.

Almost the entirety of grunge happened in the 90s - so that in itself is a major redeeming factor. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and STP (although not always lumped in with the other 4).

Add to that:

• The 90s British invasion (Oasis, Radiohead, Verve, Blur, etc.)

• The launch of several high-profile female vocalitsts (Sarah McLachlan, Joan Osbourne, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, etc.)

• The rise of the all-star movie soundtrack. Up until the 90s, you were more apt to have one artist scoring the whole album.

• A non-tangible asset of the 90s (meaning you can't "play" it) was the death of hairmetal bands like Poison and Warrant.

What I consider "true" 90s artists are usually from the last half of the decade. Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, etc. Not bad, but not great.
