The-Dream's "Yamaha" Anybody hearing this?
Dream's doing Prince better than Prince himself. Stupid, huge, shiny, gorgeous. Love this shit.

The Dream is pretty underrated. I hate most current R&B, but for whatever reason, I like him.

Kinda cool! Always knew he was a big Prince fan. His music is like a blend of Prince and R. Kelly.

I love it! I'm definitely looking foward to hearing the rest of 'Love King' and 'Good Ass Job.'

I'm sad to say the rest of Love King is not nearly as exciting

Think this is more like The-Dream copying Ready For The World
The song is good, just ...songwriting is more slated for Melvin Riley Jr. [Edited 6/30/10 9:17am] Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

That was my first inclination hearing the song - that it sounded like a Ready for the World reject. I almost thought Melvin Riley was singing lol

I feel the same way too. Something's missing with it compared to his past two albums.

I love the beat! The Dream is always good for a few great songs per cd. Hes more reliable than Prince these days, and that drum beat is way more creative than much we've heard from Prince these days. ______________________________________________

It has an 80s sound to it, but it doesn't necessarily sound like Prince that much. More people are realizing these days that if you want to do 80s-inpired stuff these days it doesn't have to sound like Prince or The Cure.
It's an okay song, but the beat is perhaps a bit too busy for the song itself.

I think it definitely sounds like Prince.... a combination of Little Red Corvette, Private Joy and I would die 4 u.

"Little Red Corvette" and "I Would Die 4 U" would be the obvious pieces to compare it to, but the 80s sound and production style do not start and end with Prince. The melody and the chord progressions have more to do with rather generic 80s pop music than it has to do with Prince. I guess the "Yamaha" reference may be to the DX7 or FM synthesis in general. The influence of 80s Yamaha gear extends far beyond Prince's output and Prince wouldn't even be considered a typical user of those units. I think at least the "bright-sounding" chords on the song are FM.
Now, obviously I cannot deny that he might have tried to make it sound like Prince all the way. He could be also referring to a Yamaha motorcycle along with "yomamma".

it definitely has an 80s retro feel to it

speaking of 80s Prince-sounding music, whatever happened to P.Diddy's new album? He's using music that sounds like it's coming straight from Prince's '1999' album sessions

I am starting to wonder if some of you are smoking crack. This guy is not catching Prince on a bad day this song is Ready For The World trying to sound like Prince from 20 years ago crap. It might time for some of you to move on if you think this crap is better than anything on 20TEN.

I saw them a couple months ago and RFTW shut that bitch down . . . until Mint Condition took over that is. Melvin sounds the SAME! As for the Dream, I refuse to give him props on GP.

You could hear IIWYG in the beginning. Don't like the sound of what he's doing to it

Adult Swim has little vignettes during commercial breaks. The current one says
Breaking News: Prince declares the internet is dead
In other news, The-Dream has released the best Prince album in 20 years
WHAT?! Other than the 2 Prince or Ready For The World inspired tracks, it's basically the same shit you hear everywhere these days "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I saw that shit during last week's Boondocks ep. I was like Ya'll doing too much
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yeah, I saw that too.
It really annoys me when the media makes glib criticisms of prince's music. I hear it every now and then like this. I'd much rather they just stick to making fun of his image. They try to come off as music-savvy with the music criticisms, like they know what's going on... just annoys me.
