Daria: Another Reason To Hate A Dying Music Industry!

When Daria: The Complete Animated Series gets released on May 11, everything will be intact, except of course 99% of the music that first appeared on the show!

The music has always been the hold up to an official Daria release, and it seems it just couldn't be worked out with a greedy, arrogant music industry.

The music industry has always been a greedy and inefficient business. That they couldn't see to it to let a very good show like Daria keep it's music is unforgiveable.

I've always thought karma played a big part in the industries demise, technology aside. This is further proof that they have no idea what they're doing.

Music gets pulled from DVD sets of TV shows all the time.

It's not a big deal, it's how business works.

To me it's just as important. That's why it sucked when it was taken off Beavis & Butt-Head's set. Yeah it's taken off most, but considering what MTV was, it was important as the shows themselves. shrug JMHO.

I really wonder how much those licensing fees are that so much music is scraped from TV show sets...

That's pretty sad. The same thing is preventing official DVDs for The Wonder Years to be released.

As much as it sucks, I'd rather have new music than no DVDs. I'm excited for this set!

The same thing happened with the Beavis & Butthead DVD sets. They could only include the actual cartoon episodes and not all the parts where they made fun of all the music videos (which were some of the best parts of the show).

Thankfully we have YouTube to watch all of those parts smile

This has made a few DVD collections worthless to me:

-Beavis & Butt-head: as previously mentioned, their music video critiques have been removed... that was the best part of the show for me.

-In Living Colour: the Fly Girls are no longer dancing to hot hip hop and R&B tracks of the late 80s and early 90s (Main Source, Miki Howard), but awful new muzak.

-WKRP In CinCee~nati: Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap are not cueing up cool songs on the DVD version. Hell, I'm surprised they didn't blur out Juice Newton's cover art hanging on the station's wall. shrug

Besides the video parodies, I think the Fly Girls were my favorite part of the show back in the day! love / jerkoff / sexy / purse

They taught me about some old school joints too like "Bounce Rock Skate Roll", I remember looking on the credits to see what song that was.

It kills alot of them that it holds up the releases, and also gets parts edited out of the shows, the Odd Couple Tv Series from the 70's suffered from this on its dvd releases, when a cast member, say Tony Randall, sang a song or something that had a "license" to release it now was a major issue that the part just ended up getting cut because the fee now is about a trillion times more than then

I think its just more about someone holding a license and charging what they want, depending on demand, on someone elses property/creative work. But like you said its business, which is funny because, people dont get that when it comes to a music company sueing someone for downloading and not paying and yet this issue is just "business" its an interesting take.

My thing is that it's obviously rediculous fees the industry is charging. Of course they can charge for the music but c'mon.

Exactly. To the point where cost of simple usage is prohibitive, that's hindering art and entertainment.

?uestlove recently said something about how people overcharging now for sample usage basically deaded Pete Rock's career and completely inhibited his creativity.

Sad state of affairs.

Even though I think people have good intentions initially when it comes to charging people for sampling the music, yeah it can be a bit too much especially considering Pete Rock's career going down the tubes because of it. Biz Markie's been struggling since that sampling case though he's still pretty active.

Well, this is a fresh case of bullshit. sigh

the music can make or break a TV show, and with some of these programs the best, classic moments involved the music.

Yeah but thats the thing, someone pointed out what Chuck Berry charges, chuck berry dont own shit, he is lucky he owns his clothing at this point. I mean Vanilla Ice stole Queens riff but he didnt even know what it was, it was actually stolen by the peeps propping him up who figured it was a band from england who no one in the states cared about, WRONG, Vanilla Ice lost everything he made and rightly so, because in reality he/they stole, and if its business, its business like you said, its not just business when it benefits the artists we like, or the labels arent sueing the "common folk" so choose your battles.

Well i have worked with a-ha and its members on film/theater projects and now a local singer Sondre Lerche, and they never have charged, the only thing is that i cannot sell something advertising their involvement. Basically that means "come see _____ features music by a-ha" tickets are such and such, that would be where i would run into fees.

they got it pretty much for free the first time around or it wouldn't have been in there. most likely because it was an MTV production and the rate was the same as if they were just playing videos. they want to sell it now. so now they have to pay.
