No problem. I'm interested in this performance as well. Besides 106 & Park, I've never seen her on TV before.

Here's her Twitter: www.twitter.com/JanelleMonae

That Letterman performance was great. lol She had a full horn section, and had a dude bring out a James Brown cape for her and everything, LOL.

Janelle at the end of her performance on David Letterman on 5/18. I'm sure the clip will be found on youtube sometime tomorrow. She did the JB cape thing. Yes, JB is definitely one of her influences. P.Diddy came out at the end of her performance and stood with Janelle and Dave. She was well received by the audience.

Thanks for posting! biggrin

Her dance steps are similar to JB and Prince. You can definitely see who many of her influences are in her performance and her music, with so many of them combined. You can find a bit of many in her music and performances. .Start from the 4:56 mark, and see where JB gets the cape while singing "Please, please, please) Janelle is bringing JB back in female form. Even the front of her hair is raised up like how JB wore his in the front during the eraly 60s, like a typhoon, and when Prince raised his hair up during the 90s like that too..

she did okay on letterman cool. she looked nervous mushy. neutral @ "sean" lol. album is the business though love. bought it the day it came out in the pouring rain (devotion stoned). went in five circles in best buy to find it hidden at the bottom of the new releases lol. gotta have a better look at the cover and junk, but it looks cool though geek. on heavy rotation. neon valley street, wondaland and locked inside are my jams for today. the more i listen, the more i love it all dancing jig. hope to see much more from her thumbs up!

I love it...I feel like I'm witnessing a renaissance. She picking up where people like James Brown, Prince, Michael, Grace Jones, etc left off, and making something beautiful.

You don't have to have to shake your weave and ass like Beyonce to be successful. She's funky and loud and just BIG.

And damn!! That girl can dance. smile

I found a much better youtube clip with better sound quality of her performance on David Letterman on 5/18 ;you can hear her voice much clearer on this clip:

You picked up on the same thing I said. She has JB, Prince, Grace Jones, MJ, David Byrne (from the Talking Heads), David Bowie, and Annie Lennox. Thing is, you can't put limit her music creativity to one category, which is a good thing. I don't think I've seen this much embracement of an artist's music by so many orgers here for a while, other than the embracing of Prince and MJ's music. So far, if you total all the views from the David Letterman show from her performance on 5/18,, that's on youtube, that performance received more than 80,000 views in less than 5 days.

This album is getting a whole lot of love from critics. It has a staggering 94 at metacritic so far.

I adore this. As I said in the locked thread, I can't wait to get into the nooks and crannies of this album. It's exceeded my high expectations. Janelle is a star.

Why! disbelief

Beyonce is at the forefront of black music. Janelle Monae should be. I think that's why it's being brought up.

I agree. Too many female stars rely on the ass-shakin' (or weave shakin' lol ), skimpy outfit wearin', over-sexualized image and music to make and maintain their careers. I think Janelle is a perfect example of how her talent alone speaks for her. I don't need to watch the videos to like the song, even though she's one hell of a performer...reminds me of the days of old, and I ain't even that old.

I don't understand the need to knock Beyonce to uplift Janelle. Both are very good performers in different ways, and technically, neither have done anything that hasn't been done before. Like Kida said, why even mention Beyonce at all? If you were to say Lady Gaga or Rihanna, I'd get your point. But put Beyonce in a masculine suit with no hair extensions, and she would sing just as great as she usually does. Matter of fact, Beyonce HAS performed onstage in a conservative suit before (with no choreography). lol So B isn't the one to be contrasted.

Let's not trash a Janelle Monae thread by making it a Janelle vs. Beyonce thread, shall we?

I think the main point was that Beyonce is currently the face of black music, and that Janelle Monae deserves a whole lot of success for what she is doing.

The album just came out, what, 5 days ago, with most people not knowing who she is. lol And she's only done one performance that viewers either loved or called a "James Brown impersonation." Allow Janelle a chance to actually garner some success with more of her "emotion picture" that's supposed to bring in the attention. She is not bizarre/ludicrous enough to get that quick Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga fame, so it will not happen instantly.

Shame, this is her third album and people are just now checkin' for her. She's always written some pretty cool tunes. I think the reason she's just now getting noticed is because she hasn't tried to be wackadoo like Gaga and Nicki Minaj (*gag*).
