WAS GLITTER REALLY ALL THAT BAD?????????? I THINK NOT! I'm watching it now and well....it's not as bad as the critics made it out to be. That's not to say it was any degree of cinematic perfection but...it's not horrible. Certainly better than that crap that was to be Brittney's film debut. Mariah's acting is adequate as she is essentially playing herself. The story is rather predictable; lady sings the blues meets a star is born minus the drugs, sex, and hooking. Ok that's stretching it but the film does try to take elements of Mimi's real life and make it more dramatic but not enough to garner an R rating. Gotta let her kiddie fans enjoy her rags to riches storyline.
So...in hindsight: Do you think the film still sucks? Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned? Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah? Was it the direction that killed the film or just a Mimi backlash? Was it Eric Benet's and Da Brat's fault? Discuss...

it seems for most (general public) poor sales = bad album.
with the exception of one, maybe two songs, i like it. had it been released in the mid 90's i think it would've faired better as far as radio and charting. no it wasn't that bad IMO. but considering her situations at the time, i can see why it didn't meet expectations. Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned? perhaps a little biased. Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah? I saw it on HBO last month. It wasn't the worst flick I'd ever seen. Pretty much on a Showgirls and Striptese level. It should come with a free bottle of Courvoisier and then it would be an awesome flick.

The album was possibly her best.
The movie was fun and probably not 80s enough. C'mon.. her dj boyfriend's haircut was not eighties enough.

this is probably the only Mariah Carey album i havent heard

I like the CD, especially the ballads. The 80's trends were coming back anyways, so I'm not sure why she was ragged on for it.

There are alot of elements.
EMI did not have the "bank" to push her with this, there was a huge "under the table" element going on with this porject and it was going to fail no matter what. Second, had this come early in MC's career it would have been a hit film, sucking or not, lets be real, almost all music artists on film SUCK but the soundtracks work. Ever see "Hard to Hold" by Rick Springfield, worst movie ever (and Rick agrees, he calls it, "me being a whore with acting") but the soundtrack did well, very well. Third this movie concept was just done, with HONEY by Jessica Alba, same idea same line, both sucked ass, and both had awful acting. Fourth this idea was a bad plan, also that fucking movie poster is terrible, someone needed to tell MC to get a new pose, it just looked like another album shot, so it wasnt taken seriously at any point. Next MC's antics during this time were just fuel to the fire. All in All the album is one of her best, something she needs BADLY to shake shit up, anything, sure there were a few awful songs, but the good ones and the direction was FRESH AIR from an artist that rarely takes a chance. Do you think the film still sucks? It didn't suck but it wasn't great either
Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned? yeah, it was weak but it wasn't THAT weak Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah? Not sure, Mariah actually helped it because it would've have gotten off the ground without her Was it the direction that killed the film or just a Mimi backlash? both Was it Eric Benet's and Da Brat's fault? They sho as hell didn't help it! It was supposed to take place in the 80s but most of the film, yet they didn't take any step to make feel that way, it seemed like it was 80s in name only and that sex scene was weak "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I never had a problem with the movie. It was okay - not bad but not Oscar worthy.
The soundtrack was HOT.

it's campy & it's 90 minutes of Mariah, of course i love it!
i especially love the part with the different Didn't Mean To Turn You On performances montage. she looked so hot on them.

I tried watching the movie once but lost interest after about 10 minutes so I never bothered finishing it.
The soundtrack, however, is probably Mariah's most underrated album, I still play it a lot, there are some great old school jams on that one. And "All My Life", produced by Rick James, is one of the best songs she's ever done! Love those live drums and the funky flute!!! Just like the white winged dove...

The album is one of my favorite Mariah albums; I love the 80's sounds but wasn't too fond of the slow songs on it (apart from Twister).
I'm a big Mariah fan so I enjoyed the movie on a it's-so-bad-it's-good level. I would have preferred if Mariah did a grittier story or an all out silly, butterfly and lamb laden movie instead. Glitter was neither here nor there, it wasn't fun enough to be a comedy and not good enough to be dramatic. I've seen Mariah in other stuff like Precious, Wisegirls, and um Ally McBeal and really like watching her onscreen. I would love to see her do a comedy because she has such a quirky sense of humor and doesn't take herself too seriously. Do you think the film still sucks? NO, grown to like it, 90 minutes of Mariah is always fun. Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned? Yes, no worse than other music films. It is very, very poorly written, don't know if better direction or acting could have even saved it. Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah? Nope Was it the direction that killed the film or just a Mimi backlash? Both Was it Eric Benet's and Da Brat's fault? No lol [Edited 4/14/10 2:39am]

First of all, I worked for EMI and I worked that project. Yeah, it was that bad. And there was plenty of "bank" to promote. The real BIG thing that deflated it, was the release date. September 11, 2001. We'd had all kinds of plans to work this. And plenty of marketing plans and money. However, the country really wasn't in the mood for a few weeks. And when the country was ready to try and laugh again, the ONE JOKE the ONE SAFE JOKE that every late night comedian went to, was GLITTER. It got killed every night on tv. It went on for weeks. There was no way to recover from that. So we just moved on. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

Wow those are some great points and I totally forgot about Honey. I actually think Honey was worse though. Weren't MC's antics, in part, a result of her movie/album tanking and the critics basically saying she didn't have it anymore?

The director shoulda just watched that on the set as inspiration . Can't really remember hating the movie, but as lastdecember pointed out, that poster was hidious. It was a stupid movie with horrible acting. That whole movie was created just to show case mariah in a bikini for a couple of hours.
If your a mariah carey fan then you will tolerate the movie. It was just bad. It did NOT even deserve to go on the big screens, that should have went straight to VHS/DVD The soundtrack was cute. Oh yeah forgot to add, the movie didn't look 80s it looked so 90s. That was a big issue. [Edited 4/14/10 18:43pm]
