There are alot of elements.

EMI did not have the "bank" to push her with this, there was a huge "under the table" element going on with this porject and it was going to fail no matter what.

Second, had this come early in MC's career it would have been a hit film, sucking or not, lets be real, almost all music artists on film SUCK but the soundtracks work. Ever see "Hard to Hold" by Rick Springfield, worst movie ever (and Rick agrees, he calls it, "me being a whore with acting") but the soundtrack did well, very well.

Third this movie concept was just done, with HONEY by Jessica Alba, same idea same line, both sucked ass, and both had awful acting.

Fourth this idea was a bad plan, also that fucking movie poster is terrible, someone needed to tell MC to get a new pose, it just looked like another album shot, so it wasnt taken seriously at any point.

Next MC's antics during this time were just fuel to the fire.

All in All the album is one of her best, something she needs BADLY to shake shit up, anything, sure there were a few awful songs, but the good ones and the direction was FRESH AIR from an artist that rarely takes a chance.

First of all, I worked for EMI and I worked that project. Yeah, it was that bad. And there was plenty of "bank" to promote. The real BIG thing that deflated it, was the release date. September 11, 2001.

We'd had all kinds of plans to work this. And plenty of marketing plans and money. However, the country really wasn't in the mood for a few weeks. And when the country was ready to try and laugh again, the ONE JOKE the ONE SAFE JOKE that every late night comedian went to, was GLITTER. It got killed every night on tv. It went on for weeks. There was no way to recover from that. So we just moved on.

I remember hearing P was going to produce a song for this album, and I remember being disappointed when I bought it and didn't see him on any production credits. Did this not materialize? Was it just a rumor? What was the story behind that?

Anyway, I liked a few of the songs. Never saw the movie.
I love when artists make songs that sounded like the 80s pop/funk,
so much more refreshing then the robotic sounding r&b we have in 2010.

The soundtrack, however, is probably Mariah's most underrated album, I still play it a lot, there are some great old school jams on that one. And "All My Life", produced by Rick James, is one of the best songs she's ever done! Love those live drums and the funky flute!!!

I totally agree. It's the only Mariah album I really like. The 80's influence, funky songs, and Rick James! How could I not love that? It's too bad the unfortunate timing, Mariah's own problems, and the poor movie reviews tainted the reception of the soundtrack.

I've actually never seen the movie, though.

The "bank" im talking about is to Compete with others, which emi has never had, unless its a Beatles Reissue or Norah Jones. They were up against Sony and every kind of move that emi made Sony outdid them ten times with whatever they had. This Project was doomed, and 9/11 had a very minor effect though Mariah has been known to bring that point out, 9/11 didnt effect Jay Z released the same day.

I love Mariah as much as anyone on this thread, love fallinluv cloud9 but I saw this movie when it came out, and it sucked. I saw it again a couple years later on VH1, and my opinion still didn't change. Having said that, I've seen worse movies, and while it was really corny, it wasn't anywhere near as awful as the steaming pile of turds that were Freddy Got Fingered, Battlefield Earth, Hudson Hawk, Plan 9 From Outer Space, or Armageddon. doody

I also hated the fact that Mariah pushed "Loverboy" as the first single from the Glitter soundtrack, because it was a piece of crap. (Though from what I heard, her ex Tommy Mottola tried to sabotage the single by giving the original sample she wanted to use to Jennifer Lopez for the remix to "I'm Real".) Which was really too bad, because the rest of the soundtrack is among some of Mariah's best and most inspired work. I wonder if Mariah did do a reissue of the soundtrack with some outtakes and re-title it "The Glitter Sessions" or something like that, whether it could be a hit album today.

I know 9/11 doomed much of this project, but the fact that Mariah had her breakdown just prior to the release of the movie and soundtrack obviously kept her from promoting the project, so there really was no chance of it getting any positive buzz prior to release.

EMI has always spent money where they thought it was necessary. Norah Jones is not a good example. Because that's a record that ended up having a life of its own and we didn't really spend money on it. Of course they spend on the Beatles. And they spend on Coldplay. And on Radiohead. And Janet Jackson. Gorillaz. I could name two dozen projects that we had a decent budget on and Glitter would still rank around second all-time. And believe me when i tell you, there was PLENTY of money for the Glitter project. The setup alone was more than we'd spent in YEARS. It wasn't a "competition" thing. The record sucked and it was magnified by the fact that it was released on 9/11. Those first few days after the incident, when everyone was trying to figure out what was safe to joke about? The one safe bet was Glitter. We even had meetings about it. We waited to see if public opinion was going to swing back the other way, and it never did.

I'm watching it now and well....it's not as bad as the critics made it out to be. That's not to say it was any degree of cinematic perfection but...it's not horrible. Certainly better than that crap that was to be Brittney's film debut. Mariah's acting is adequate as she is essentially playing herself. The story is rather predictable; lady sings the blues meets a star is born minus the drugs, sex, and hooking. lol Ok that's stretching it but the film does try to take elements of Mimi's real life and make it more dramatic but not enough to garner an R rating. Gotta let her kiddie fans enjoy her rags to riches storyline.

So...in hindsight:

Do you think the film still sucks?
Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned?
Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah?
Was it the direction that killed the film or just a Mimi backlash?
Was it Eric Benet's and Da Brat's fault?

For Norah i was talking more about everything after album one, album one was broken by retail and the reps that pushed (the old fashioned way, that i know, since i was part of the team working with her people) as for competition, though it may not have been one for EMI, Sony was treating it that way and i had reps from Sony telling me constantly that (at the time) Destinys Child with things like "Bootylicious" etc were what the focus had to be on, we once had the "Loverboy" single and "Bootylicious" cd singles which were part of the "dumping" scam for chart positions, displayed together, the reps at sony sent out a threatening email to have the MC single removed from the area of their Sony Products. The thing is that the record was her best and still is one of her best because it took some chances, no one could market this however, which is why she is still doing the crap she does now, but the movie never should have been, that was obvious, the reviews were out for it long before, people screened it and panned it long before, it was doomed from there, 9/11 added a little to everyones struggles, but shit if Jay Z could get back in form and sell a rap album when everyone was talking about "togetherness" and his album was far from it, she cant live on that excuse. She also had the first 10 years of her career to do a movie, not at a point when she was sliding out of the marketplace, not smart at all.

The biggest problem with this movie was...

There was zero chemistry between Mariah and her co-star (the DJ/boyfriend guy).Surely she could have got a better, more exciting co-star....to make the love story more believable?

Yes, the movie was that bad! It was one of the worst things i've ever seen lol. Seriously, the script was awful and so was the acting.

The soundtrack on the other hand I enjoyed. It's a lot better than critics say.

Do you think the film still sucks? YES!
Do you think the film was unneccesarily panned? No. I don't think critics where just out to get her. Had the film been any good, some critics would have said so...Good film critics don't care about the box office (or box office potential of a movie).
Would this film had worked better with someone other than Mariah? No. It was not just her acting as I said below. It was mainly the script. Put Meryl Streep in there (who can sing as well).
Was it the direction that killed the film or just a Mimi backlash? Direction and script. Maybe a slight backlash hurt it commercially, but I figure even if it did do well commercially, it at best would be deemed a very forgettable movie. See Britney's movie, which didn't totally crash and burn at the box office.
Was it Eric Benet's and Da Brat's fault? No, but they didn't help.

I saw that movie with my sister in a nearly empty theater with the intent of goofing on it (only problem was someone else had the same idea and in general they were rude and nasty). I couldn't stand Mariah at the time (not that I like her much better now but I realize she is talented and occasionally had a good song out).

Look, it was that bad and only a real fan would defend it! Her acting was pretty lame, but worse than that was the story, which went by way too quickly....and worse than that was the guy that played her boyfriend. That was without a doubt the worst performance I saw in a mainstream (and very mainstream, at that) film ever! EVER! Anyone else agree? Everyone cheered and laughed when he was killed (even funnier how quickly Mariah's character bounces back to sing her love song to him....clear example of the awful script).

I hear people say that a lot and I don't totally buy it. I don't forget that I bought Jay-Z's "The Blueprint" that day. I had just came back from a class....the teacher apparently didn't think that the falling of three major towers in in the middle of NY due to a terrorist attack was any reason to delay a statistic test....I knew I did so little studying for that test I was half hoping for that. She didn't say a word about it, though. It was very odd. It's entirely possible that she was so isolated that day and didn't even know....but it was like 12PM, so I doubt it. I guess I went with her attitude that everything was normal, just go on with your life. I wasn't to thrilled to rush back home, either. So I went to Media Play (which is sadly, gone, of course). They were kind of business as usual for that time of day. Also, Bob Dylan released a new studio album that day (a follow up to his Grammy winning best album of the year from a few years ago)..I believe that also outsold Mariah by a lot.
