Lady Gaga - the new Madonna or Cyndi Lauper?

So I was at the pizzeria the other day and some twenty-somethings were talking about Lady Gaga.

Someone mentions that she's the "new Madonna" and another countered with "hell no more like the new Cyndi Lauper".

The conversation rambled on...but aside from being impressed that a twentysomething even knows who Cyndi Lauper was, I decided that this would be good thread fodder for the Org.

DO YOU THINK THAT LADY GAGA IS MORE LIKE THIS GENERATION'S VERSION OF MADONNA OR CYNDI LAUPER????

...let the games begin...

I would say that Ladyhawke sounds more like cindi l than Gaga. As 4 being the next Madonna?.....Only time will tell.

I'm not familiar with Ladyhawke...but I think that they were discussing the artist in general (not just the voice).

I mean, Gaga is outlandish in her attire same as Cyndi was (well, more so but all in keeping with the standards of the day)....but Gaga also protrays a sex appeal that's definitely more "Madonna".

...oh...and as a side note...my wife is convinced that Gaga uses a voiceover.

Ladyhawke does sound like Cindi musically as well, even using eighties synths and recording process. Gaga using voiceover??? NEVER.....haha.
Remember Madonna has been known to lip-sync to backing tapes. wink

Neither. Lady Gaga is the new Boy George. The novelty of her extreme costumes will wear off and she will probably self destruct on drugs and be out of the music business and a joke in a few years' time and people will wonder what the fuss was all about.
I don't see Lady Gaga having the long lasting impact of either Madonna or Cyndi. (Cyndi although not as successful as Madonna still performs and still releases quality work and still has respect in the industry) I don't see Lady Gaga being around at all 20 years from now.

She's not even that original, she's more like Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons.

This is a dumb question. Why do we need a new Madonna or Cyndi? Those two are doing just fine and thriving in music. I STILL listen to Cyndi's last album, Bring Ya To The Brink, regularly. Madonna is working on another new CD, and is about to release a long awaited DVD of her Sticky & Sweet tour.

Caca is a cheap copy of a copy of a copy of a copy. There will NEVER be another Madonna, another Cyndi, etc. She's more known for her stupid costumes than anything musically. In another year, you people won't give two shits about her.

It remains to be seen. I don't think there is any question that she has a decent shot at being the "next Madonna", but of course only 1.5 albums into her career its way too early to say. If she can successfully navigate pop music trends and keep releasing fresh and exciting pop music (as she has done), then perhaps.

Jumping the shark on a weekly basis. That's you. You really have no idea what you're talking about on this one. NO idea.

What's her one hit? Let me list them for you, and you can pick one you think is her one hit. Then you can sit the fuck down and recognize.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Same Ol' Story
She-Bop
I Drove All Night
Money Changes Everything
Time After Time
True Colors
All Through The Night
The Goonies R Good Enough
Change of Heart

I'll stop there. Go ahead.....let's hear it.

Girl covered a Prince song on her debut album too, and did quite well on it.

And oddly the one song he's probably got stuck in his craw wasn't even #1 on the regular US chart.

i think so too. i also believe that there is a lot more to her than
the things we've seen this far.

at the base of it all, she's a talented songwriter. so she goes all
pop/art on us now but she's got it in her to do very different and
surprising stuff.

her piano renditions of her songs sound just as interesting as the
highly produced album versions. which is to say that beneath all
the hype, there's definately substance.

even if people chose to completely overlook that or hiss at that,
simply because she's very 'in your face' with her costumes and her
shows.

but i do wonder why people dislike or hate on her appearance that
much. her inspiration comes from solid, cool sources. i'd rather
watch someone who's inspired by warhol or decides to dress like a
living mallevich painting than have to sit through one more clip
of beyonce doing open legg squats in her house of deriere dresses.

most of the clips i've seen of her one off performances where at
the very least interesting. that "tempation of saint anthony" by
dali inspired decor for her rendition of "speechless" in the UK
a few weeks back was just astonishing.

but no doubt people will call that 'artsy fartsy' or something and
say she's an egomaniac who thinks she's more clever than anyone or
something like that.

either people shoot her down for being too 'pop' or for having no
substance, or they call her pretentious and up her own ass.

that, to me is more boring and irritating than anything gaga has
done to date.

Agreed. i don't know if she's the next Bowie or not - she'll have to show me alot more before I would be willing to say something like that.

But there is no question that she has injected something fun, fresh and exciting in a dreadfully stale pop scene. I love where she is drawing her inspiration and how she's putting it together musically and visually.

Looking forward to seeing/hearing what she does next! Hopefully she continues to stay true to what she wants to do.

seriously dude, why don't you just admit that you have no clue what you are talking about, and move on?

Cyndi Lauper had numerous chart singles internationally, as well as the United States. She is a well-known music icon that has maintained a successful career for nearly 3 decades. I've read some uninformed things on this site, but referring to her as a "one hit wonder" has to be up near the top.
